For sustained or heavy rain, put your phone in a correctly sized, securely sealed waterproof pouch with a clear touchscreen window—or keep it put away until you reach shelter. A phone’s built-in water resistance is model-specific and does not guarantee that it will stay dry or work normally in every downpour.
Why a phone’s water resistance may not be enough
Water-resistance ratings describe protection under specified test conditions, not an unlimited guarantee for everyday exposure. For IPX8, the manufacturer specifies the depth and duration; the rating alone does not establish how a phone will fare in heavy rain. Google puts it plainly: “No phone, however, is 100% waterproof.” Google’s IP-rating explainer explains why the exact model and its stated conditions matter.
Check the current guidance for your exact phone model rather than relying on a brand-wide claim. For context, Apple lists some iPhone models as IP68, tested at up to six metres for 30 minutes, and older models as IP67, tested at up to one metre for 30 minutes. Those are controlled-test specifications for particular models, not a promise of safe use in a rainstorm. Apple’s water-resistance guidance includes model-specific information.
Resistance can also diminish with normal wear. Apple, Samsung, and Google each warn that water resistance is not permanent; damage from a drop, a crack or chip, or a repair or disassembly is a reason to be especially cautious. See Apple, Samsung, and Google Pixel guidance.

Choose protection that still lets you use the phone
Use a clear-window waterproof pouch for extended exposure
A waterproof pouch with a transparent front is a practical option when you need to see or operate the screen in persistent rain. The screen stays behind a barrier, separating protection from usability—two different issues, since a wet touchscreen may not respond. Samsung warns, “The touch screen may not be active if wet.”
Before relying on a pouch, check its size, closure instructions, and the fit of your phone with its case, if you plan to leave the case on. Seal it exactly as directed. Button access, camera use, speaker audibility, and touch response can vary by pouch and setup; do not assume every pouch works reliably in every condition. For example, T’nB describes its PHBAGWP as an IPX8 pouch for phones up to 7 inches, with a clear screen intended to allow touchscreen use in rain and an adjustable, removable strap. Use a pocket only as brief shelter
For a short shower, a zipped inner pocket or a sheltered pocket in a bag can reduce direct exposure. It is not a waterproof seal, so it is a poor substitute for a properly closed pouch during prolonged heavy rain. If you do not have suitable protection, put the phone away until you are sheltered.
Make the phone usable without exposing it
- Set up voice guidance or audio before heading out, where practical, so you need fewer screen interactions in the rain.
- Keep the phone inside its pouch while checking the screen; repeatedly taking it out to tap or swipe in a downpour defeats the barrier.
- Check that the pouch is compatible with your phone and any case, and that you can still reach the functions you need without compromising the closure.
What to do after the phone gets wet
- Wipe the exterior. Use a clean, soft cloth, paying attention to the areas around the speakers, microphones, and charging port. Apple recommends a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Let it dry at room temperature with airflow. Do not use external heat or put objects into a connector; Apple specifically advises against both.
- Keep cables and accessories disconnected while the port is wet. Follow your own manufacturer’s instructions, including any wet-port alert or charging guidance. Apple says to wait at least five hours before cable charging, and only once the device is completely dry; that timing is Apple-specific, not a universal rule.
- Allow time for audio components to dry before calling. Samsung advises drying the earpiece, microphone, speaker, and USB connector and letting the phone air-dry; moisture can reduce microphone volume.
Do not use rice, a hair dryer, a heater, compressed air, or swabs or paper inserted into the charging port as a shortcut.
