The Alienware Area-51 7500 was a configurable high-end gaming desktop from the 2006–07 Core 2 era—not a single fixed specification. Depending on configuration, it could pair a Core 2 processor with one or two NVIDIA graphics cards, including GeForce 8800 GTX cards in SLI. Period reviewers praised its performance and build, while flagging its high price, size, and noise. If you are considering one today, verify the exact machine and its condition rather than relying on specs for a different Area-51 generation.

What is the Alienware Area-51 7500?

The Area-51 7500 is a high-end Alienware desktop covered in reviews from 2006 and 2007. It belongs to the Core 2 era. Dell’s currently hosted Area-51 comprehensive specifications describe a different, later model: the October 2009 P08G, with an Intel Core i7 processor and Intel X58 Express chipset. Those specifications should not be used to identify or configure a 7500. Dell’s Area-51 specifications identify the later platform.

What are the Area-51 7500 specs?

There was no one universal configuration. PC Perspective’s review lists the following available options; individual review systems differed, and a surviving desktop may have been changed since it left the factory. PC Perspective’s Area-51 7500 review provides its configuration details.

Component Options or details reported for the 7500
Processor Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Extreme
Chipset NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI
Memory 800MHz DDR2, up to 4GB in PC Perspective’s listed specifications
Graphics GeForce 7950 GT, or optional dual GeForce 8800 GTX cards
Storage SATA 3Gb/s drives, with RAID 0 or RAID 1 options
Power supply 700W standard or 1000W optional

Review samples illustrate why configuration matters. TechCrunch’s December 2006 sample had a Core 2 Duo Extreme, two GeForce 7900 GTX cards, 2GB of DDR2, 250GB and 300GB hard drives, and a Creative X-Fi sound card. Its report says the CPU was liquid-cooled; it does not say the GPUs were liquid-cooled. TechCrunch’s 2006 hands-on describes that particular sample.

  • Intel Core Ultra 9 285K 3.2GHz Processor
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 32GB GDDR7
  • 64GB DDR5-6400 RAM
  • 4TB Solid State Drive
  • 2.5GbE LAN; 2x2 Intel Killer WiFi 7 BE1750+Bluetooth 5.4

PCWorld tested a different, higher-end setup: a Core 2 Extreme QX6700 normally clocked at 2.66GHz, overclocked by Alienware to 3.2GHz and kept stable with liquid cooling; 2GB of 800MHz DDR2; and two 768MB EVGA GeForce 8800 GTX cards in SLI. These are details of PCWorld’s tested system, not guaranteed specifications for every 7500. PCWorld’s July 2007 review identifies its sample and results.

How fast was it in period reviews?

PCWorld reported a WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 125 for its tested configuration. In its contemporary gaming tests, that configuration averaged 165 frames per second in Doom 3, compared with 143 fps for the tested gaming-PC average, and averaged 187 fps in Far Cry. These figures are historical results from PCWorld’s 2007 test setup; they are not measurements of current games and should not be compared with modern benchmark results unless test conditions match.

Reviewers’ broader impressions were favorable about speed, but not unqualified. TechCrunch described strong game and audio-application performance in its 2006 hands-on. PC Perspective praised speed, cooling, interior organization, and build detail, but identified noise as a drawback. Its reviewer, Jonathan Hung, wrote in the February 19, 2007 conclusion: “The only problem I see about the Area 51 is it’s noise.” That is a reviewer’s observation, not a measured decibel rating. PC Perspective’s review contains the dated assessment.

Was the Area-51 7500 worth its price?

At launch-era prices, contemporary reviews framed it as a powerful but expensive system. TechCrunch questioned whether its 2006 sample was worth roughly $4,000, while PCWorld listed $6,007 for its tested QX6700 configuration as of July 11, 2007. These are prices attached to different review samples and dates, not a single standard price or an estimate of what a 7500 costs now.

Whether a particular used example is worthwhile depends on its actual configuration, working condition, completeness, and asking price. The period reviews establish neither a current market value nor present availability. Treat a listing as an individual vintage-PC purchase: confirm that it powers on, identify the installed parts, and account for any missing or failing components before deciding what it is worth to you.

What should you check before buying or restoring one?

Identify the generation and installed parts

  • Ask for the model identification and clear photos of the case label, motherboard, graphics cards, drives, and power-supply label.
  • Confirm the processor model and whether it has been overclocked; do not infer the installed CPU from a general 7500 option list.
  • Check whether graphics are a single card or an SLI pair, and record the exact card models.
  • Verify memory capacity and speed, drive type and capacity, and any RAID configuration.
  • Distinguish a 2006–07 7500 from the later P08G platform. A manual or specification page for a later Area-51 does not establish the 7500’s parts or compatibility.

Assess condition and practical trade-offs

PCWorld noted the 7500’s large footprint and shiny plastic that showed fingerprints; PC Perspective cited noise. On a used system, inspect for dust buildup, damaged fans, unusual operating noise, and signs that cooling or other components have been modified. Those checks can reveal condition issues, but the period reviews do not establish the state of any specific machine.

Verify storage before ordering an upgrade

The listed storage interface is SATA 3Gb/s, so a 2.5-inch SATA SSD is a plausible upgrade category, not a confirmed drop-in fit. Before buying one, inspect the specific desktop for its available bay, connector, mounting arrangement, and any adapter requirement. Confirm whether changing a drive would affect an existing RAID setup, and back up data before altering storage. The available review specifications do not certify compatibility for a particular SSD or every 7500 configuration.
