Intel’s Raptor Lake mobile VPU is a discrete Intel Movidius vision processing unit: a laptop AI accelerator intended chiefly to handle camera and collaboration effects such as background blur, eye contact, and automatic framing. It can take some AI-heavy work off the CPU and GPU, but it was offered only in select 13th Gen Intel Core laptop designs—not in every Raptor Lake processor or laptop.
What does VPU mean?
VPU stands for vision processing unit. In this context, it refers to Intel’s Movidius VPU, a separate module for AI acceleration in certain laptops. Intel said select designs based on 13th Gen Intel Core processors would feature it, describing it as a discrete option rather than a standard part of the processor family.
The distinction is practical: a laptop can use a Raptor Lake CPU and integrated graphics without having the Movidius VPU. The processor generation or model name alone does not establish whether a particular laptop configuration includes one.
What does the Raptor Lake VPU do?
Runs selected camera and collaboration effects
Intel highlighted background blur, eye contact, and automatic framing for video calls, collaboration, and streaming. These effects analyze camera input, making them a natural fit for a vision-focused accelerator.

Offloads some AI work
Intel’s stated purpose was to assign AI-heavy collaboration and streaming tasks to the VPU, potentially leaving the CPU and GPU more available for other workloads and multitasking. That is Intel’s intended role for the hardware, not a published benchmark showing a specific performance, battery-life, or image-quality improvement.
The VPU is not a replacement for the CPU or graphics processor. It is a specialized companion for supported AI tasks; general computing and graphics still rely on the laptop’s other processors.

Which Raptor Lake laptops include it?
Only select designs were said to include the discrete Movidius option. Microsoft’s specifications for the Surface Laptop Studio 2 provide a concrete example: listed consumer configurations with a Core i7-13700H and commercial configurations with a Core i7-13800H include an Intel Gen3 Movidius 3700VC VPU AI Accelerator.
That example applies to the configurations Microsoft lists, not automatically to every Surface Laptop Studio 2, Surface device, or 13th Gen Intel laptop. Check the specification for the exact model and SKU before buying.

Does it enable Windows Studio Effects?
Not necessarily by itself. Microsoft says Windows Studio Effects requires a supported NPU, manufacturer opt-in, and the appropriate driver. The effects Microsoft lists include background blur, eye contact, auto framing, voice focus, portrait light, creative filters, and an eye-contact teleprompter. Availability can depend on the device and its software support, so a Movidius VPU listing alone does not guarantee every Studio Effect will work.
How to check a laptop before buying
- Verify the exact configuration. Look in the manufacturer’s technical specifications for an explicit listing such as “Intel Gen3 Movidius 3700VC VPU AI Accelerator.” Do not infer its presence from “13th Gen Intel Core” or “Raptor Lake.”
- Check the effects and driver support. Confirm which camera features the manufacturer supports on that model and whether the necessary driver and Windows features are available.
- Decide whether the use case matters to you. The VPU’s cited role is camera effects and AI-heavy collaboration or streaming. The cited specifications do not establish a like-for-like VPU performance, image-quality, or battery-life advantage, so do not assume a particular improvement.
How it differs from later Intel AI hardware
The Raptor Lake laptop VPU discussed here is a discrete Movidius module in select designs. Intel’s later Core Ultra families identify an integrated AI Boost NPU as a distinct engine; later NPU claims should not be read as specifications for this Raptor Lake part.
Likewise, Intel material about Raptor Lake-P for industrial machine vision and robotics discusses broader platform capabilities, including integrated Xe graphics, hybrid CPU cores, and Vector Neural Network Instructions. Those capabilities are not the same thing as the discrete Movidius laptop VPU.
