Linux is easier to switch to when you check your essential apps and devices first, try a distribution on your actual PC, and learn its built-in software and update tools. Start with a live USB or virtual machine rather than wiping Windows immediately; compatibility depends on the specific programs, games, peripherals, and hardware you rely on.
Start with the Windows tasks you need to keep doing
Before choosing Linux, write down the applications and devices you depend on for work, school, communication, creative projects, and everyday file handling. Include games, printers, scanners, Wi-Fi adapters, docks, webcams, VPNs, cloud services, and specialized keyboards.
For each item, check the vendor’s Linux support information and identify whether you can use a native Linux version, a suitable alternative, a web version, or a virtual or remote Windows environment. Do not assume that an alternative preserves every feature, file format, or collaboration workflow. A must-have app or device that has not been checked is a reason to keep Windows available while you evaluate Linux.
Choose a distribution with clear instructions
Desktop Linux comes as distributions, each with its own installer, desktop, software sources, and documentation. Ubuntu and Linux Mint are two reasonable candidates for newcomers; the available guidance does not establish one as easiest for everyone.

- Ubuntu: Microsoft’s Linux installation guide names Ubuntu as a common starting point, and Ubuntu provides official tutorials for trying the desktop, installing it, and managing software.
- Linux Mint: Its documentation includes installation, user, and troubleshooting guides. The Linux Mint User Guide is useful for learning its tools and recovery options.
Compare distributions by whether their desktop feels comfortable, whether your hardware works in a trial session, whether your essential software has a supported path, and how useful their installation and troubleshooting instructions are. If release support duration or software freshness matters to you, check the distribution’s current release information rather than relying on old version-specific advice.
Try Linux on your computer before installing it
A live session starts Linux from removable media so you can explore the desktop without first installing it to the internal drive. Ubuntu documents both making bootable media and trying the desktop in its Try Ubuntu Desktop tutorial. Microsoft says installer media for a bare-metal setup typically needs a USB drive of at least 16 GB; that is a general size recommendation, not a requirement for trying Linux in a virtual machine.

- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sound, webcam, and sleep or wake.
- Display resolution, scaling, external monitors, and docks.
- Printer and scanner functions, plus any special input devices.
- Your ordinary documents and connections to work or school services.
A successful trial is useful evidence about your computer, but it is not a guarantee that every feature will work after installation or with every update.

Choose how you want to keep Windows available
The installation route determines how much commitment and switching friction you take on. Microsoft’s Linux installation guidance discusses WSL, virtual machines, and Linux running directly on the hardware. Microsoft describes the latter as “bare metal Linux.”

For a Windows-and-Mint dual boot, Linux Mint’s installation guide advises installing Windows first. For a dual boot or replacement installation, follow the chosen distribution’s current official instructions; do not apply old forum commands to a current system without verifying them.

Back up files and recovery information before partitioning
Make an independent copy of personal files before changing partitions or installing an operating system. A system snapshot is not a substitute for that backup.
If Windows uses BitLocker, save the recovery key somewhere you can reach without the PC. Ubuntu’s installation documentation covers BitLocker-specific steps, and Microsoft flags the recovery key in its bare-metal guidance. Ubuntu also documents Intel RST considerations. Check the current instructions for your chosen distribution and computer before changing disk settings.
Install Linux apps through its software tool
Linux applications are not automatically Windows applications. In Ubuntu, the App Center lets you search or browse for an app, select it, choose Install, and authenticate. Ubuntu’s software installation guide explains that the App Center handles snap and Debian packages and lists snaps first when an app is available in both formats.

Use the distribution’s software tool and trusted sources where possible. A Windows .exe installer is not a native Linux application, so downloading one and expecting it to install normally will not work. Before switching, check each must-have Windows program individually for Linux support or a practical alternative.
Check games one title at a time
Valve’s Proton compatibility layer can make some Windows games playable through Steam, but it is not a guarantee for every game, launcher, anti-cheat system, or graphics setup. Valve’s Proton requirements page, edited June 2, 2023, notes that some newer Steam Play titles may require graphics drivers newer than those included with a particular Ubuntu release. Because driver requirements change, use current game-specific compatibility information and your distribution’s current driver guidance rather than treating old example commands as universal instructions.
Test the games that matter to you—including titles that use anti-cheat or a non-Steam launcher—before removing Windows as an option.

Use the graphical updater and understand recovery
For routine updates, use the graphical update manager supplied by your distribution. Linux Mint’s user guide describes Timeshift snapshots for restoring the operating system after certain failures, mistakes, bugs, or malicious programs. Those snapshots do not include personal files, so keep a separate personal-data backup.
Mint’s guide also warns that kernel updates can cause regressions affecting networking, the desktop, or booting. If an update is followed by a problem, consult the distribution’s recovery instructions; an operating-system snapshot and a backup of your documents serve different purposes.
Give yourself a practical adjustment period
Once Linux is installed, learn where your chosen desktop puts files, settings, installed applications, and updates. Keep a short list of unfamiliar actions to look up in the distribution’s documentation. When a supported Linux app handles a task well, using it is often simpler than forcing a Windows-only program to work.
Keep Windows accessible until you have verified any critical work software, devices, and games on your own setup. No general guide can establish compatibility for an unspecified PC or application list; a live session and item-by-item checks are the useful tests.
