The 2025 HP OMEN MAX 16 is a powerful, premium gaming laptop—but the experience depends heavily on which configuration you buy. Independent reviews praise its gaming performance and aluminum build, while also flagging a heavy chassis and loud fans at higher power settings. The optional 240 Hz OLED is a standout, but it is not fitted to every model. For many buyers, the RTX 5080 may be the more sensible choice: Windows Central found its reviewed 5080 configuration nearly as fast in games as its 5090 version, for hundreds less.
What the OMEN MAX 16 is—and why the configuration matters
OMEN MAX 16 is a family of 16-inch gaming laptops, not one fixed specification. Notebookcheck describes the 2025 range as starting with a Core Ultra 7 255HX, RTX 5070 Ti, and 2K IPS display, and extending to a Core Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5090, and 1600p OLED. Other combinations exist: HP’s result for SKU 16-ah0097nr, for example, lists a Core Ultra 9 275HX and RTX 5080 with an IPS panel. Check the exact regional listing for processor, GPU, memory, storage, and display before comparing prices or relying on a review result.

The independent performance findings below mostly concern high-end RTX 5090 review units. They should not be treated as benchmark predictions for an RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5080 configuration.

RTX 5090 review configurations
Tom’s Hardware tested a Core Ultra 9 275HX system with an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, 32GB DDR5, 2TB SSD, and 2560 × 1600 240 Hz OLED. It found strong synthetic and real-world gaming results, broadly in line with other RTX 5090 laptops tested by that outlet. However, some RTX 5080 competitors kept pace with or exceeded its test unit, so the GPU tier alone does not guarantee a performance lead over every rival.

Windows Central tested a Core Ultra 9 275HX / RTX 5090 configuration and recorded 99.4% frame-rate stability across 25 Time Spy runs. That is a result from that reviewer’s repeated benchmark runs, not a promise that every configuration or game will have the same consistency. The reviewer also found demanding games and work tasks manageable, and credited the cooling redesign with helping maintain performance.
What the frame-rate examples mean
PC Gamer tested Cyberpunk 2077 at native 1600p and reported 38 fps, rising to 116 fps with DLSS 4 multi-frame generation. The higher number includes AI-generated frames; it is not the same as rendering 116 frames per second natively. Multi-frame generation can make motion look smoother, but it does not turn the underlying native-rendered performance into the same figure.
That review describes the Core Ultra 9 275HX as a 24-core processor with a maximum frequency of 5.4 GHz and found it capable in games and creative work. Tom’s Hardware likewise found everyday productivity tasks—including browsing, large file copies, and video transcoding—quick on its fully configured unit.

Do not assume the RTX 5090 is automatically the best-value OMEN MAX 16. Windows Central reported that its RTX 5080 configuration delivered nearly identical gaming performance to its tested RTX 5090 option while costing hundreds less. That is an outlet-specific comparison, not a guarantee that every 5080 and 5090 listing will perform identically; compare the exact laptop configurations and prices available to you.
The 5090 is the top option in the family, but the supplied reviews do not establish that its premium is worthwhile for every buyer. If you are choosing between these tiers, weigh the actual price gap against the games and settings you use, and check whether the specific 5090 model’s extra capability—such as its memory capacity—is useful to you. Tom’s Hardware’s observation that some 5080 competitors kept pace with or exceeded its 5090 test unit is another reason to compare complete systems rather than GPU names alone.
Fan noise, heat, and performance modes
The OMEN MAX 16 can sustain high performance, but it is not quiet when pushed. PC Gamer says Unleashed mode can drive the fans up to 5,000 RPM. In that reviewer’s Time Spy Extreme comparison, Balanced mode was quieter but scored almost 25% lower than the aggressive setting. The choice is a real trade-off: less fan noise in exchange for a substantial reduction in that particular benchmark result.
Windows Central also described the fans as loud and higher-pitched, despite reporting strong frame-rate stability over repeated runs. Consistent performance and quiet operation are separate qualities; the stability result does not mean the laptop stays unobtrusive under load. Notebookcheck’s review headline characterized its RTX 5090 unit as very fast but somewhat too hot, and listed that GPU at 175 W. That assessment applies to its reviewed configuration and is not evidence of a family-wide reliability problem.

Chassis and portability
Tom’s Hardware described its unit’s black, mostly aluminum chassis as premium-feeling, but measured the laptop at 6.1 pounds and noted that the power brick adds around two pounds to a bag. Windows Central also described a matte aluminum body just over six pounds. This is a substantial machine to carry regularly, especially with its charger.
OLED and IPS options
The tested top-end display in Tom’s Hardware’s review was a 2560 × 1600, 240 Hz OLED panel, which it praised for vivid color and wide viewing angles. Windows Central describes a 16-inch 1600p 240 Hz OLED option with a 0.2 ms response time, while also noting that IPS LCD versions are available. OLED is therefore an option, not a feature to assume from the OMEN MAX 16 name; confirm the panel type and refresh rate on the precise SKU.
Keyboard and ports
Tom’s Hardware criticized its review unit’s keyboard as mushy and lifeless, a reminder that a premium chassis does not ensure every input component will suit every user. Windows Central describes a protruding rear shelf for ventilation and ports, and reports rear HDMI 2.1, Ethernet, charging, and USB-A, plus two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a headset jack on one side and another USB-A port. Confirm port layout against the documentation for the exact regional model before purchase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before buying
- GPU: Confirm whether the listing is RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, or RTX 5090; do not apply a 5090 review result to lower-tier models.
- Screen: Verify OLED versus IPS, resolution, and refresh rate on the exact SKU.
- Memory and storage: Compare the installed RAM and SSD capacity; the family includes different configurations.
- Noise tolerance: If you expect to use maximum-performance modes often, account for the fan noise rather than judging only by benchmark scores.
- Portability: Consider the laptop and power brick together if you will carry it frequently.
- Upgradeability: RTINGS notes that the family’s RAM is upgradeable, unlike some competing thin laptops with soldered memory; confirm the details for the model you are considering.
- Alternatives: Notebookcheck names the MSI Vector 16 HX, Lenovo Legion 9 16, and Razer Blade 16 as alternatives. Compare exact GPU power limits, panel specifications, weight with charger, noise under load, upgradeability, and current street price.
Review-time prices are not current offers
Prices cited by reviews are historical reference points, not October 2026 prices. Notebookcheck reported a US range of $2,500–$4,000 for configurations at the time of its review. Tom’s Hardware listed $4,329 for its tested Core Ultra 9 275HX / RTX 5090 / 32GB / 2TB / 240 Hz OLED configuration at publication. Current pricing and availability can differ by retailer, region, and SKU.
Verdict
The HP OMEN MAX 16 earns its performance-first positioning if you want a powerful 16-inch gaming laptop, value its premium aluminum construction, and can live with its weight and audible cooling. The optional fast OLED adds appeal, but not every configuration includes it. The most important buying decision is matching the exact GPU and panel to your needs—and comparing the RTX 5080 price against the 5090 rather than assuming the flagship GPU is automatically the smarter purchase.
