Use a local weather station when an automation needs conditions measured at your property, such as rain, wind, or temperature. Use a cloud weather API when it needs a forecast or weather data for a location without a station. In Home Assistant, a hybrid setup can use both: local readings for what is happening at home and a cloud service for what may happen next.
What’s the difference?
A local station measures conditions where its sensors are installed and sends those observations over your home network to an automation hub. A cloud weather API returns data from an online provider, which may include provider observations, model forecasts, or both. These sources answer different questions: a forecast for your coordinates is not a substitute for a sensor reading at your home.
“Local” describes the data path to the hub, not necessarily every feature of the station. Companion apps, cloud history, remote access, firmware updates, and forecast services may still depend on the internet or a manufacturer account. Likewise, a cloud API usually needs an internet connection and may require an account, key, or subscription.
Which source fits the automation?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Detect rain or wind at the property now | Local station | Its sensor measures conditions at its installation site and can send readings to the hub over the LAN. See Home Assistant’s WeatherFlow integration and Ecowitt integration. |
| React to expected weather in the next hours or days | Cloud forecast API | A forecast is model output for a location, rather than an observation from a sensor at the home. Home Assistant’s Open-Meteo integration offers current conditions plus hourly and daily forecasts. |
| Use weather data for a second property or a location without a station | Cloud API | The service can provide data for configured coordinates without installing sensors there. |
| Automate both present site conditions and upcoming weather | Hybrid | Use local sensor entities for measured conditions and cloud forecast entities for forward-looking decisions. Home Assistant offers both WeatherFlow local and WeatherFlow Cloud integrations. |
Neither option is universally more accurate. A station provides an observation at its sensor location; forecast performance varies by location and model. Home Assistant notes that Open-Meteo forecast precision depends on the available model and location.

How local integrations connect to Home Assistant
WeatherFlow Tempest: local UDP
Home Assistant describes WeatherFlow as “a local-only, UDP-based integration that reads data directly from the device.” The station and Home Assistant host must be on the same subnet for this integration, so network segmentation or firewall rules can prevent discovery or data delivery. WeatherFlow’s cloud integration is separate and provides station observations as well as forecasts.
The Tempest app may show values that differ from Home Assistant’s local readings because the app also uses forecasts and nearby stations. The integration documentation also warns that lightning detection may miss strikes or be affected by electrical interference; do not use it as a guaranteed safety alarm. Details are in the WeatherFlow integration documentation.

Ecowitt: local callback push
Home Assistant’s Ecowitt integration is marked Local Push. It creates a callback endpoint, and you configure the station to send reports to that endpoint. The documented supported hardware includes GW1200, GW2000, and GW3000 gateways with compatible sensors. Check the specific bundle: a gateway alone may not include the weather sensors needed for the readings you want. The integration instructions and Ecowitt Weather Quick Start describe setup and network operation.
Ecowitt devices do not support HTTPS for this reporting connection, according to the Home Assistant integration documentation. Ensure the callback is reachable on the intended local network and consider that constraint when designing network security. Ecowitt describes local network and optional cloud operation; the local callback does not mean every product feature is cloud-free.

Ambient Weather: the built-in integration uses the cloud
Do not assume that an Ambient-branded station’s built-in Home Assistant integration is local. The Ambient Weather Station integration communicates through Ambient Weather Cloud and requires application and API keys. Home Assistant points readers seeking a local route toward ecowitt2mqtt in Ambient Weather mode or Ecowitt devices.
What cloud weather integrations provide
Open-Meteo
Home Assistant’s Open-Meteo integration provides current conditions and hourly and daily forecasts for a configured zone. It polls every 30 minutes, and Home Assistant says its current conditions are not real-time. That makes it unsuitable as a substitute for a promptly updated on-site rain sensor when timing matters.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The integration documentation says Open-Meteo is free for open-source and non-commercial use without an account or API key. Commercial users should verify the service’s current terms; the Open-Meteo API documentation describes the API.
OpenWeatherMap
Home Assistant’s OpenWeatherMap integration requires an API key. Its documentation describes a free registration-based mode and a One Call API 3.0 subscription mode, and notes that V2.5 is deprecated for this integration. Availability, quotas, and terms can change, so check the provider’s current requirements before relying on a particular mode.

WeatherFlow Cloud
The WeatherFlow Cloud integration uses a Tempest account personal access token and provides both station observations and forecasts. Home Assistant maps provider condition identifiers to its own weather conditions, and warns that the mapping is not one-to-one. A cloud condition label therefore may not match the device app or another provider exactly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose based on connectivity, updates, and upkeep
- Internet dependency: A LAN-based integration can deliver station data without using a cloud weather service, but internet-dependent app features, remote access, or forecast services may stop working offline. Cloud integrations require access to the provider and, where applicable, valid credentials.
- Network requirements: WeatherFlow local uses UDP and requires the station and hub on the same subnet. Ecowitt requires the station to reach Home Assistant’s callback endpoint and does not support HTTPS on that reporting path.
- Update behavior: Local WeatherFlow uses UDP and Ecowitt uses push reporting; Open-Meteo’s Home Assistant integration polls every 30 minutes. These patterns affect how quickly an automation can see changes.
- Ongoing administration: A station requires suitable placement, compatible sensors, and hardware maintenance. Cloud services may require account setup, API keys or tokens, and attention to current quotas and usage terms.
- Cost: Hardware cost and a universal API cost comparison are not established here. Compare the complete sensor-and-gateway bundle with the specific service’s current free-use, account, subscription, quota, and commercial-use terms.
Build automations around the right entity
In Home Assistant, identify whether the automation reads a station sensor or a weather forecast entity. Use a sensor entity for measured conditions at the property and a forecast entity for expected conditions. Naming the source in the automation and dashboard helps prevent confusion when two sources report different values.
For consequential actions involving rain, lightning, frost, or other hazards, use conservative thresholds and appropriate safeguards. The cited integration documentation does not establish these weather devices as certified life-safety systems, and sensor readings have limitations.
