That platform behavior is not a rule for every AI search service, and it is distinct from ChatGPT Ads measurement.
How do I add UTM parameters to AI search links without breaking attribution?
UTMs are query parameters attached to a URL. When someone clicks a tagged link, Analytics can use those values to identify the campaign that referred the visit. Google Analytics Help says to always include utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign; use additional fields only when your reporting scheme needs them. See Google’s URL builder guidance.
First decide whether you control the link. You can tag a newsletter, paid promotion, or other campaign URL that leads to your site. You generally cannot dictate the citation URL an AI service generates when it links to your content. For those referrals, check the platform’s documentation and your incoming analytics rather than adding parameters to your own pages in the hope of changing the outbound citation.
Build a publisher-controlled campaign URL
- Choose one shared campaign label. Agree on a naming convention before creating links. Keep values consistent and lowercase: UTM values are case sensitive, so different capitalization can create distinct values in reports. GOV.UK recommends consistent campaign values and lowercase naming in its UTM usage guidance.
- Set the core fields. Use
utm_sourcefor the source label, such as a platform, newsletter, or partner;utm_mediumfor the channel, such asemailorreferral; andutm_campaignfor the initiative. Google recommends relevant additional fields such asutm_idfor an organization’s campaign ID orutm_source_platformfor the platform responsible for directing traffic. - Add optional detail only when it answers a reporting question. Use
utm_contentto distinguish creative or placement variants. Google describesutm_termfor paid keywords; do not use it as a catch-all for AI prompt text. Google documentsutm_creative_formatandutm_marketing_tactic, but says they are not currently reported in Analytics properties. - Assemble the query string correctly. Start the first parameter with
?, then separate each additional name/value pair with&. If the destination already contains a query string, append UTMs with&, not a second?. Google says parameter order does not matter. When generating URLs in code, encode values safely. - Keep one authoritative set of UTM keys. Do not overwrite an existing campaign URL or append duplicate UTM keys. The cited guidance does not establish a universal rule for how duplicate keys are resolved, so avoid creating that ambiguity.
For example, a publisher-created link for an AI-related campaign could be https://example.com/article&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=ai_search_guide. This is an illustrative taxonomy chosen by the publisher; it is not a claim that ChatGPT adds all three values. Google’s URL builder shows a campaign URL with the same basic fields, and an owned newsletter example that also uses utm_content.

How do I track ChatGPT Search traffic in GA4?
OpenAI’s publisher FAQ says ChatGPT automatically includes utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs from ChatGPT Search. This statement applies to the documented ChatGPT behavior, not to AI search services generally. OpenAI also says publishers can allow OAI-SearchBot to support discovery and can track ChatGPT referral traffic in analytics. See the OpenAI Publishers and Developers FAQ.
In GA4, use Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition to examine session acquisition. Check Session source, Session medium, and Session campaign to see visits associated with the relevant values. If you are asking which source first brought a new user to the property, use a First user dimension instead; it answers a different question.

Do not assume that every AI referral will have the same source, medium, or campaign values as ChatGPT. For other services, consult current provider documentation and inspect the actual inbound data in your property.
Which GA4 attribution scope should I use?
GA4 acquisition dimensions are scoped to different points in the user journey. A value that appears in one report may not answer a question about another scope. Google’s documentation on Analytics scopes distinguishes these dimensions:

Choose the scope that matches the question before comparing reports. Session traffic from a link and event-level credit for a conversion are not interchangeable measures.
Will UTMs override auto-tagging?
They can interact. Google says auto-tagged values take precedence for source, medium, and other traffic-classification dimensions when both methods are used. However, in specified cases where a GCLID or DCLID cannot be used as intended, any UTM parameter can cause Analytics to derive cross-channel source dimensions exclusively from the UTM values. Review Google’s manual and auto-tagging guidance before combining tagging methods.

That is why adding a single UTM is not automatically harmless. Use manual tags where they are needed, follow the tagging setup for the campaign and analytics property, and avoid introducing partial or conflicting values. Google warns that incomplete tagging can leave some campaign values as (not set).
How do I check redirects and avoid breaking attribution?
A correctly formed UTM link is only useful if the needed parameters reach the landing page where analytics collects the visit. Redirects can change the URL, so treat parameter preservation as an implementation check rather than an automatic guarantee.

- Click the tagged link as a visitor would, and inspect the final landing URL after redirects.
- Confirm that the required query parameters remain present at the landing page.
- Check the matching session dimensions in GA4 Traffic acquisition after data has been collected.
- Avoid tagging internal navigation links indiscriminately. GOV.UK warns that tagging its own internal links would break default referrer and attribution tracking in its setup; the effect on another property depends on its analytics configuration.
How is ChatGPT Ads measurement different?
ChatGPT Search referral tagging and ChatGPT Ads click measurement are separate mechanisms. OpenAI documents an ads click reference named oppref, along with Pixel and/or Conversions API events, an attribution window, and potentially modeled measurement. OpenAI recommends preserving oppref through redirects and landing-page navigation. It is not a UTM and is not the documented mechanism for organic ChatGPT Search referrals. OpenAI notes that ad conversion totals can differ from third-party analytics because of attribution methods and windows, timestamps and time zones, consent and storage, deduplication, configuration, and modeled reporting. Therefore, do not treat two systems’ totals as directly comparable without accounting for how each measures conversions.
