That could give system builders another CPU architecture to pair with NVIDIA GPUs, but the announcement does not yet establish which boards, software versions or operating systems will be supported.
What does NVIDIA’s CUDA support for RISC-V mean?
NVIDIA announced support for RISC-V as the host-CPU architecture for CUDA systems at the 2025 RISC-V Summit China, according to Tom’s Hardware’s event coverage. In this arrangement, the CPU runs the operating system, application logic and CUDA system software; the GPU remains the device that performs parallel workloads.
That distinction matters: CUDA computation is not moving onto the RISC-V CPU. RISC-V is an alternative host processor architecture alongside x86 and Arm in the described system. A DPU also appeared in the event’s system diagram for networking and data transfer, but the announcement does not make a DPU a requirement for every CUDA-on-RISC-V system.
Why could this be a big deal?
RISC-V is an open instruction-set architecture that hardware developers can use to build processors. Supporting it as a CUDA host option could let system builders consider RISC-V CPUs without giving up NVIDIA’s GPU software and hardware stack. The significance is therefore about broadening the CPU choices around CUDA—not replacing NVIDIA GPUs or proving that RISC-V systems will be faster or cheaper.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
RISC-V International connects the move to momentum in high-performance computing and AI, and describes RVA23 as a stable architectural target. The organization’s RISC-V Annual Report 2025 quotes NVIDIA vice president of Multimedia Architecture Frans Sijstermans: “We wouldn’t have considered this without RVA23”. The remark links NVIDIA’s decision to a defined RISC-V hardware profile rather than to the architecture in the abstract.
Can a RISC-V CPU serve as the host for a CUDA system?
Yes, that is the role described in the announcement: the RISC-V CPU hosts the system, and the NVIDIA GPU performs GPU-parallel computation. RISC-V International’s report said data-center hardware based on RVA23 was expected in 2026. That was a hardware expectation—not a CUDA release date, a guarantee of a supported retail board or evidence that such hardware is available now.

What has NVIDIA actually confirmed—and what remains unknown?
The announcement establishes the architectural direction, but the sources describing it do not provide the implementation details a developer needs to choose hardware or install software.
| Question | What is established |
|---|---|
| Which boards are compatible? | No supported board list or named CUDA-compatible RISC-V board is identified in the cited announcement coverage or RISC-V International report. |
| Which CUDA toolkit and driver versions work? | No toolkit version or driver compatibility matrix is identified in those sources. |
| Which operating systems are supported? | No operating-system list is identified in those sources. |
| How does performance compare? | No performance comparison or benchmark figures are provided in those sources. |
| Can developers use it generally today? | The cited sources do not document a generally available developer release. |
In particular, a generic RISC-V development board should not be assumed to run CUDA. Compatibility depends on the processor profile, platform, GPU and software support; the announcement coverage does not supply a verified combination.

What to watch for next
When vendors publish actual systems, the useful checks will be the supported RISC-V profile and extensions, CUDA toolkit and driver versions, operating-system support, GPU compatibility, board availability and workload performance measured on equivalent systems. Until those details are documented, claims of widespread adoption, imminent hyperscale deployments or a specific regional strategy remain predictions or outside analysis—not confirmed NVIDIA commitments.
