Yes—you can make a three-LED chaser without an integrated circuit (IC): a discrete circuit uses transistor switches and capacitors to make the LEDs turn on in sequence. ElecCircuit’s example explains the approach and reports how its timing responded to component changes, but the accessible instructions do not provide enough verified schematic detail for a safe, reproducible wiring guide. Treat it as a learning circuit, not a complete build recipe.

How a transistor-and-capacitor LED chaser works

In an IC-free chaser, transistors act as switches and capacitors help control when those switches change state. As the capacitors charge and discharge, the transistor network changes which LED conducts, producing a repeating sequence. ElecCircuit describes this behavior for a circuit that chases through three LEDs, but its accessible explanation does not establish every current path, node voltage, or component connection. ElecCircuit’s three-LED transistor chaser

This is an educational alternative to using a timer and counter IC. It can help illustrate switching and capacitor timing, but a functional explanation is not a substitute for a complete schematic.

What the published example establishes—and what it does not

Apichet Garaipoom’s ElecCircuit tutorial, last updated January 22, 2026, reports a breadboard-tested, three-LED design. The author says the circuit was tried with a 5 V to 15 V supply and capacitors from 10 µF to 100 µF. In that particular design, increasing the relevant capacitance made the corresponding LED stay on longer. These are source-reported project values and observations, not universal recommendations or independently replicated results.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The accessible text does not expose all resistor values, transistor models, or wiring connections needed to reproduce the circuit reliably. It also refers readers to an expanded supporter resource for a step-by-step explanation. Do not infer a transistor pinout or fill in missing connections from a general description. A proper build requires the complete schematic and verification of every component value and rating.

How timing adjustments affect the chase

Capacitance affects how long the timing network takes to change state, so the LED on-time changes in the demonstrated circuit. ElecCircuit reports testing 10 µF to 100 µF capacitors, with larger values producing longer on-time for the corresponding LED. That relationship is useful for understanding the design, but the specific timing and useful component range depend on the actual circuit.

The author also reports that turning the circuit’s variable resistor changes the flashing behavior. At one extreme, all the LEDs turn off; at faster switching rates, the LEDs can look dim because the eye cannot resolve the flashing. These are observations reported for the tutorial’s circuit, not guarantees for other layouts or component choices.

Discrete chaser or 555 timer plus CD4017?

A common IC-based alternative uses a 555 timer to generate pulses and a CD4017 decade counter to advance the sequence. DigiKey’s tutorial search result describes this arrangement and notes current-limiting resistors for the LEDs; Jaycar’s manual search result also identifies a 555/4017 chaser. Those sources support the architecture, not a controlled performance comparison with the transistor design. DigiKey’s 555 LED chaser tutorial · Jaycar’s Safe Low Voltage Designs manual

Consideration Discrete transistor/capacitor chaser 555 timer plus CD4017
Meets a no-IC requirement Yes; the cited design uses transistors and capacitors rather than a sequencer IC. No; it uses a 555 timer and CD4017 counter.
What it teaches Transistor switching and capacitor charge/discharge timing. Clock pulses and counter-based output sequencing.
Timing consistency The ElecCircuit author says the demonstrated circuit can behave inconsistently compared with an IC circuit. No head-to-head measurement or consistency figure is established by the cited material.
Adding LEDs The ElecCircuit author says adding LEDs to this design requires additional transistor sets. The cited material describes a counter-based approach but does not establish an expansion limit here.
Build detail available in the cited material The accessible explanation omits enough schematic details that it is not a complete wiring guide. DigiKey’s search result identifies the general architecture and LED current-limiting resistors; full implementation details should be taken from its tutorial.

The choice depends on the goal: a discrete circuit fits an IC-free learning exercise, while a timer-and-counter design demonstrates a conventional sequencer architecture. The available sources do not establish that either option is categorically faster, safer, or more efficient.

Safety and what to verify before building

The 5–15 V supply range belongs to ElecCircuit’s described design; it is not a safe operating range for arbitrary transistors, LEDs, resistors, or capacitors. Before applying power, use a complete schematic to check component ratings and calculate LED current for the actual supply voltage and resistor values. The accessible tutorial text does not supply enough detail to make those checks or to provide a verified parts list.
