Each stage in Michael Rechtin’s 3D-printable planetary gearbox is reported to provide a nominal 4:1 reduction. Stack stages and the ratios multiply: two stages yield 16:1, and three yield 64:1. “Unlimited reduction” is a headline description of the modular design—not a claim that infinitely many stages are practical or that the gearbox has a proven maximum capacity.
How the stacked reduction works
A planetary gearbox uses gears arranged around a central sun gear, with planet gears carried inside a ring. In this design, stages can be added or removed to change the overall reduction. The coverage describes the gearbox as intended for a brushless DC motor and reports a nominal 4:1 ratio per stage.

The two- and three-stage examples are reported by Cameron Coward in Hackster News. Adding reduction trades motor speed for output speed and torque in principle, but the available coverage does not establish this particular gearbox’s efficiency or output under a specified load.
What “unlimited” means—and what it does not
The design’s modularity lets a builder stack stages to increase the ratio. The sources do not establish an infinite ratio, a universal maximum stage count, or that every additional stage will work in every application. More stages also mean more physical components in the assembled gearbox.

There is no published efficiency curve, backlash figure, noise measurement, safe continuous-load rating, or service-life result in the cited coverage. Treat the ratio examples as reported design information, not as a complete performance specification.
Motor fit and parts to verify
Hackaday describes the design in the context of a low-cost, 5010-size, 360 KV sensorless brushless motor. That is the reported design context, not proof that all motors with those labels will fit. Before printing or sourcing components, check the actual design files for motor shaft and mounting dimensions, as well as bearing and fastener requirements. Confirm that the motor’s electronic speed controller (ESC) is electrically compatible with the motor.

The gearbox is not entirely printed. Hackster notes that bearings and screws are among the hardware parts required; its article describes the remaining gearbox pieces as 3D-printable. The coverage does not specify replacement bearing or screw sizes, a filament, or print settings, so those details should come from the current design files rather than guesswork.
Strength, lubrication, noise, and the torque figure
Plastic parts and load limits
Hackster cautions that the plastic parts are not suited to extreme forces. The available articles do not state a safe rated load or establish long-term durability. Avoid treating this design as suitable for demanding or safety-critical service on the basis of the reported ratio alone.

Lubrication and noise
Hackster reports that white lithium grease was used on the gear teeth to help lubricate them and reduce wear. This is a report about this build, not a controlled lifetime test. Hackaday describes the gearbox as noisy and comments on its high-pressure-angle, straight-cut teeth and loose clearances; those are observations about the reported design, not universal characteristics of planetary gearboxes.
Why approximately 9.5 Nm is not a rating
Hackaday reports that the designer measured approximately 9.5 Nm through the gearbox. The same article questions the accuracy of that measurement because a sensorless motor may not deliver smooth force at low speed. It is therefore a qualified, project-specific report—not a rated torque, a guaranteed output, or an independently validated specification.

Finding and checking the design files
A GitHub repository points to Thingiverse item 5437152, attributes the model to Michael_Rechtin, and reports a Creative Commons Attribution license. The current Thingiverse item was not directly verified in the cited coverage. Check the original listing for file availability, current license terms, and assembly details before fabricating or redistributing the design.
When this design may be useful
The reported stage ratios make the gearbox a potentially useful experiment in modular reduction for a compatible brushless motor. Whether it suits a specific project depends on more than the ratio. Compare the required output speed and torque with motor fit, assembled size, noise tolerance, printed-material limits, and what is actually known about efficiency and durability. The cited articles do not provide a controlled comparison with commercial gearboxes.
