Robiot is an academic research tool that turns a short video of a desired object movement, together with a 3D model of the object, into candidate mechanisms designed to be 3D printed and motorized. It was developed to help automate simple tasks with ordinary objects—such as repositioning a lamp or operating a manual faucet—rather than to make those objects smart through built-in electronics. The published work describes a prototype, not a confirmed product currently available for purchase.
How Robiot turns a demonstrated movement into a mechanism
Robiot starts with two inputs: a short video showing the motion a person wants an object to make, and a 3D model of that object. The system analyzes the scene and movement, determines whether the demonstrated motion is rotational or linear, and aligns that motion with the object’s model. It then identifies parts that can move and potential attachment areas that can remain fixed, before generating candidate mechanism designs. The authors describe this process in their 2019 UIST paper.
The design problem is more than matching a motion path. A mechanism must fit the available space and provide an appropriate range of motion, torque, and speed. The paper discusses three mechanism families, each with different compromises:

These are design characteristics described by the authors, not a promise that a generated mechanism will suit every object or operate reliably in every installation.

What the generated designs are intended to do
Robiot generates models for add-on mechanisms that can be 3D printed, motorized, and attached to existing objects. The aim is to actuate things that were not designed as smart devices, using a separate mechanism rather than redesigning the object itself. The Robiot demonstration shows the research project; a Hackster.io overview describes an example using a servomotor.
That example does not establish a universal motor, power supply, printer, or print material for Robiot designs. A real build would need to be matched to the particular mechanism and task. Before choosing hardware, check the required load, torque and speed, the mounting method, the available clearance, and the electrical requirements. The paper does not report testing a specific retail motor or maker product.

What the evaluation establishes—and what it does not
The authors report an hour-long design session in which six participants used Robiot to actuate seven everyday objects. This provides a limited indication that people could use the tool in a small design-session setting. It is not a large controlled trial, evidence of widespread deployment, or proof that every generated mechanism will work outside the evaluated examples.

The reviewed project materials describe an academic research prototype. They do not establish current commercial availability, a public software release, or a universal hardware kit. Robiot is therefore best understood as a research demonstration of a workflow for generating mechanisms—not as a currently verified consumer product.
