To implement image convolution on an Altera FPGA, form a local pixel window, multiply its samples by corresponding filter coefficients, and sum the products for each output pixel. The practical design choices are how to make that window available as pixels stream in, how much arithmetic to parallelize, what to do at image borders, and how to represent and convert numbers. Altera’s official HLS IP Gen samples include a convolution_2d component intended for export to Quartus Prime; the documented Video and Image Processing Suite FIR IP is a separate implementation path.

What image convolution computes

For each output location, a two-dimensional filter applies an N×M matrix of coefficients—often called a kernel—to a matching N×M neighborhood of input pixels. Each pixel is multiplied by its corresponding coefficient, and the products are added to form the filtered value. This finite 2D linear filtering operation is used for effects such as blur, sharpening, noise reduction, embossing, and edge enhancement. See Intel’s IPP Developer Guide: Convolution for the general operation and uses.

The kernel determines the computation. A larger neighborhood generally means more coefficient products per output pixel unless the design takes advantage of coefficient structure or another optimization. Coefficients may be chosen for the desired effect, but the filter’s numeric representation and output policy also affect the result.

Choose an implementation path

Do not treat the phrase “Altera FPGA convolution” as one tool flow. The official HLS sample, the Video and Image Processing Suite FIR IP, and a custom RTL implementation have different interfaces, configuration choices, and compatibility requirements.

HLS IP Gen sample

The official Altera HLS IP Gen Code Samples repository lists convolution_2d, described as a 2D convolution IP component that can be exported to Quartus Prime. The repository provides build and run instructions for its samples. Use those instructions and check the sample’s requirements against your target FPGA and installed software; its presence is a starting point, not evidence that a build will work unchanged for every board or version.

Video and Image Processing Suite FIR IP

Altera’s Video and Image Processing Suite FIR Filter Processing guide documents a finite-impulse-response filtering path, including neighborhood construction, edge behavior, and output conversion. Those documented behaviors describe that IP; do not assume a custom HLS or RTL design uses the same border or arithmetic rules unless you implement them.

Custom RTL or another flow

A custom datapath gives you control over scheduling, interfaces, coefficient handling, and numeric behavior, but makes those choices your responsibility. Confirm that your selected FPGA family, development tools, memory resources, and I/O support the design before committing to a particular architecture. Altera’s DSP IP Support Center is an official starting point for DSP IP, DSP Builder, documentation, licensing information, and board-finding resources.

Build a streaming neighborhood and datapath

A streaming filter cannot calculate an output until the corresponding input neighborhood is available. Altera’s FIR guide describes forming an N×M input array around the output position, multiplying each neighborhood sample by its matching coefficient, and summing the products. A useful conceptual pipeline is:

  1. Neighborhood generation: make the required rows and columns of pixels available for the current output location.
  2. Multiply-accumulate: multiply samples by coefficients and add the products, either with parallel arithmetic or a scheduled set of operations.
  3. Output conversion: apply the chosen precision, rounding, and saturation policy before emitting the filtered pixel.

The exact buffering and schedule depend on the kernel dimensions and implementation. Decide how many pixels the design accepts and produces per cycle, and whether the arithmetic is parallel or reused over multiple cycles. More parallel work can trade FPGA area for throughput, but no rate follows merely from choosing an FPGA or using DSP blocks.

Set the border policy explicitly

At an image edge, part of a neighborhood falls outside the image. The filter therefore needs a rule for supplying those missing samples; different rules can produce different border pixels even when the interior calculation is identical. The documented Altera FIR IP offers edge-pixel replication or full-data mirroring when the neighborhood extends beyond the image, selected through a compile-time parameter. Choose and record the policy when configuring that IP. For a custom implementation, define the equivalent behavior yourself so results are reproducible and comparable.

Specify coefficient precision and output arithmetic

Products and their accumulated sum may need more bits than an input pixel. A custom design should account for the signedness and width of pixels and coefficients, the number of terms being accumulated, and the range of possible sums; an undersized accumulator can overflow and change the result.

Altera’s FIR guide says its documented IP retains full precision during filtering, then rounds and saturates at the output stage to the requested output precision. This is a behavior of that IP, not a guarantee for every HLS or RTL design. To reproduce results in a custom implementation, specify coefficient representation, accumulator width, rounding method, saturation limits, and output width.

Plan for FPGA resources and measured performance

Convolution is a multiply-accumulate workload. FPGA DSP blocks provide arithmetic such as multiplication and addition, while RAM blocks store data; adaptive logic modules (ALMs), registers, and other logic support the rest of the datapath and control. These are resources available to an implementation, not a throughput guarantee. See Intel’s FPGA Architecture Overview for resource descriptions and the FPGA Optimization Guide: Digital Signal Processing Block for the DSP block’s arithmetic role.

Feasibility and performance depend on the specific device, software, and configuration. The HLS sample repository explicitly notes that performance varies with hardware, software, and configuration, so do not infer a pixel rate, latency, clock frequency, or resource count without a build result tied to the target setup.

When comparing design options, evaluate them against the same workload and target conditions:

  • Kernel dimensions and coefficient pattern.
  • Pixels accepted and produced per cycle, plus initiation interval and latency.
  • DSP, RAM, ALM, and register use reported by synthesis or implementation tools.
  • Clock target and whether the implemented design meets it.
  • Input-interface and external-memory bandwidth for the intended image stream.

A compatible FPGA development board can help you synthesize and evaluate a design in hardware. Select a board by matching its FPGA family and available memory and image-input/output interfaces to the implementation; no particular board is established here as compatible with every convolution flow.
