What you need to know before building
This project combines a Raspberry Pi, Seeed’s circular ReSpeaker 4-Mic Array for Raspberry Pi, a separate speaker, and Google’s Assistant Service sample. Do not confuse that board with Seeed’s separate linear-array kit or a USB ReSpeaker product.
Seeed lists four microphones, a 12-LED programmable APA102 ring, Grove connectors, and voice-processing examples for the board. Seeed also specifies voice capture within a 3-meter radius; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified performance result. The array has no audio output interface, so the Pi needs a separate speaker or other output device.
Google’s Raspberry Pi setup guide specifies a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. Seeed lists support through Raspberry Pi 4B. These sources do not establish compatibility with Raspberry Pi 5, nor do they confirm that the full Google sample and Seeed driver stack works on a current Raspberry Pi OS release. Treat this as a documented maker build, not a currently verified installation recipe.

Understand Google’s software options and limits
Google’s Raspberry Pi flow uses the Assistant Service: the sample streams user audio to Google and receives Assistant audio in return. Google’s documented sequence covers hardware and networking, audio setup and testing, developer-project configuration, device-model registration, SDK and sample installation, and running the sample.
The older Google Assistant Library for Python was deprecated on June 28, 2019; Google directs developers to use the Assistant Service instead. Google describes the SDK as available for experimental and non-commercial use only and warns against launching commercial devices that integrate it.

The Assistant Service is not a full smart-speaker feature set. Google says it does not provide hands-free “Ok Google” activation, timers and alarms, podcast or news playback, or broadcast voice messages. Its documentation includes audio capture and playback and reference code for conversation state, but those capabilities should not be mistaken for the missing features.
Assemble the hardware
Choose the correct ReSpeaker board
Use the ReSpeaker 4-Mic Array for Raspberry Pi, the circular, input-only board named in this project. Check the exact product identity before using any setup instructions: similarly named linear-array and USB products are different hardware.

Add audio output
Connect a separate speaker or other audio output supported by your Pi setup. The 4-Mic Array captures audio but cannot play the Assistant’s response; Seeed’s product page lists no audio output interface.
Mount and connect the array safely
Seeed instructs users to align the HAT carefully and warns against hot-plugging. Follow the board maker’s physical-connection guidance, but do not assume its driver instructions apply unchanged to every current OS or kernel.

Set up Google’s documented Assistant Service flow
- Prepare the Pi and network. Google’s guide starts with Raspberry Pi hardware, a microphone, a speaker, an SD card, and network and date/time setup. Its named starting board is Raspberry Pi 3 Model B; it is not evidence that every step is optimal for newer models.
- Configure and test audio. Establish microphone capture from the ReSpeaker and playback through the separate speaker. Seeed’s page describes installing its
seeed-voicecarddriver, rebooting, and choosing an audio output inraspi-config. These are the manufacturer’s documented steps, not confirmation of compatibility with every present-day Pi OS/kernel combination. - Configure the Google developer project. Google’s setup requires a Cloud project, enabling the Assistant API, and OAuth credentials for the sample. Use Google’s developer-project configuration guide for the project and credential steps.
- Register a device model. Follow Google’s Raspberry Pi Assistant Service guide to create and register the device model used by the sample.
- Install and run the SDK sample. Continue with Google’s Raspberry Pi setup guide for SDK and sample installation, authorization, and execution. The credential JSON must be available on the Pi for authorization; keep it private and do not publish it.
Google’s overall Raspberry Pi flow is documented in its Assistant setup guide. Because the sources do not establish end-to-end compatibility with current Pi OS, confirm driver, kernel, and SDK behavior for the exact board and OS version you intend to use before relying on this build.

Seeed documents voice activity detection, direction-of-arrival estimation, and keyword-spotting examples for the array. These are board and example capabilities; the documentation does not establish that Google’s Assistant Service automatically uses them. In particular, the array’s keyword-spotting examples do not make the Google sample hands-free: Google says its Service does not provide “Ok Google” activation.

Does the old Google Assistant Raspberry Pi tutorial still work?
It should not be followed as though the original Python Assistant Library were still supported: Google deprecated that library on June 28, 2019, and points developers to the Assistant Service. Google still documents a Raspberry Pi Service flow, but the available documentation does not verify that its sample, Seeed’s driver, and a current Raspberry Pi OS release install and work together end to end. A successful result on one software combination should not be assumed for another.
Quick Recap
Is this the right build for your goal?
- Use this path if you want to experiment with Google’s documented, non-commercial Assistant Service and are prepared to validate audio and software compatibility on your specific Pi setup.
- Choose a different approach if you need a commercial product, hands-free wake-word activation, alarms, broadcast messages, or the broader capabilities of a Google smart speaker.
- Compare hardware by exact model if audio output or Pi compatibility is important. The circular 4-Mic Array in this guide is input-only; do not transfer its specifications or connection instructions to a differently named ReSpeaker product.
