Yes—SudoMaker’s RetroWave OPL3 Express is a hardware FM-synthesis sound card that can connect to a compatible single-board computer as a GPIO/SPI HAT. It also has a separate USB-serial route: ScummVM documents using USB with a PotatoPi. Those are distinct setups, and neither means that every Raspberry Pi model, operating system, or emulator will work automatically.

What is the RetroWave OPL3 Express?

SudoMaker describes RetroWave OPL3 Express as the successor to its original RetroWave OPL3 sound card; its product page lists version 2.0. The board is designed to produce OPL3-style FM sound in hardware, rather than relying solely on an emulator’s software synthesis. OPL3 is associated with the Yamaha YMF262 chip used in classic PC sound cards. A 2021 Hackster.io article describes the synthesis technology as capable of 18 channels, stereo, and four-channel output; those are descriptions of OPL3 capabilities, not a guarantee about a particular RetroWave setup.

The Express page lists a 12 Mbps USB interface, a data-transmission indicator LED, noise filtering, audio-grade capacitors, a gold-plated audio jack, and an ALPS ALPINE potentiometer. It also says the op-amps are replaceable, subject to a +5 V single-supply constraint. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. SudoMaker’s RetroWave OPL3 Express product page

Can I use it with a Raspberry Pi?

The direct HAT route uses the board connected to a host’s GPIO and SPI interface. ScummVM’s configuration reference explicitly distinguishes this SPI mode from serial mode. A 2021 account of the original RetroWave described it as a Raspberry Pi Zero-sized HAT and reported compatibility with single-board computers that have a 40-pin GPIO header, including the NVIDIA Jetson Nano. That is historical reporting about the original product generation; it does not establish exact compatibility for every Pi model or current Express revision.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a Pi installation, confirm the board’s current pinout and software instructions, and check that your particular host exposes the GPIO/SPI arrangement the setup expects. Do not assume that general Raspberry Pi audio-HAT directions configure this third-party OPL3 board. ScummVM’s bus selection is a software setting as well as a wiring choice: its documentation names spi for a HAT connection. Check the documentation for your installed ScummVM version because configuration names and behavior can change. ScummVM configuration file reference

How does the USB option work?

The USB route is not simply the HAT connected to a computer with a cable. ScummVM documents serial mode as a USB connection through a PotatoPi. A 2021 Hackster.io article described PotatoPi Lite as an STM32L development board that lets a RetroWave be accessed by Windows, macOS, or Linux computers over USB. The current Express page lists a USB CDC-ACM interface and operating-system support, but the sources do not establish current PotatoPi availability or adapter stock.

SudoMaker says its USB CDC-ACM interface needs no separate driver installation on Linux 4.4 or newer, FreeBSD 12 or newer, NetBSD 9 or newer, OpenBSD 6 or newer, macOS Big Sur or newer, and Windows 10 or 11. Treat that as the maker’s compatibility claim, not an independently verified test across every system or configuration. ScummVM’s documented serial-port examples include COM3 and ttyACM2; the actual port name depends on the host and connected hardware. Does ScummVM support RetroWave OPL3?

ScummVM’s configuration reference documents RetroWave bus selection through retrowaveopl3_bus, with spi for a HAT connection and serial for the USB-through-PotatoPi route. It also documents a serial port field and an SPI setting expressed as a GPIO chip and line. This is specific configuration support; it is not a blanket promise that every ScummVM version, game, host, or wiring setup works without configuration. Follow the current reference for your version and identify the correct device port or GPIO lines for your hardware.

What software can use the board?

SudoMaker lists several software paths for RetroWave OPL3 Express. Their status and purpose differ, so “compatible” should not be read as meaning every program is built in to every operating system.

Software Listed use or status
DOSBox-X Listed by SudoMaker as supported software.
ScummVM Listed by SudoMaker; ScummVM’s configuration reference documents RetroWave SPI and serial settings.
OPL3BankEditor Listed by SudoMaker.
RetroWaveMIDIProxy Connects DAWs and MIDI keyboards to RetroWave hardware and translates MIDI input into OPL3 commands, according to its repository.
midi2vgm and adlib2vgm Listed by SudoMaker for MIDI or tracker-file playback.
86Box and DOS support Identified by SudoMaker as experimental community support, not guaranteed official compatibility.

The RetroWaveMIDIProxy repository lists C++17, CMake 3.14 or newer, Qt5, and platform MIDI headers as build requirements. Check the repository’s current instructions before building; these prerequisites describe the project, not a ready-to-run setup on every computer. SudoMaker’s software list and hardware notes are on its product page.

What should you check before buying?

  • Availability: SudoMaker’s official shop listing was marked sold out when accessed in 2026. Do not treat any price shown on that page as a live offer while it is unavailable. A 2021 Hackster article reported prices for the original card and PotatoPi Lite, but those historical figures are not current pricing.
  • Experience level: SudoMaker’s product page says, “This product is intended for people with considerable technical expertise.” Expect to verify hardware connections and software settings rather than rely on a universal plug-and-play setup.
  • Chip provenance: The maker says recycled electronic components are used and warns, “However, the authenticity is not guaranteed,” referring to its recycled OPL3 chips. The shipped chip should not be assumed to be an original Yamaha part.
  • Op-amp changes: The board’s op-amps are described as replaceable, but SudoMaker warns that incorrect installation can irreparably damage the product. The maker specifies a +5 V single-supply constraint; this is an advanced modification, not a routine upgrade.
  • Accessories: SudoMaker links a 3D-printable case design. The available product information does not establish current retail availability for case hardware, replacement chips, or a standalone PotatoPi Lite.

Check SudoMaker’s product page for current shop status and product details.
