A Zigbee sensor hub is a small system, not a single magic box: a host runs home-automation software, a Zigbee coordinator connects sensors to the network, and optional mains-powered routers relay messages to improve coverage. With Home Assistant, you can use its built-in ZHA integration or Zigbee2MQTT as the gateway software.

What do you need for a Zigbee hub?

Plan for three core parts and one optional part:

  • Host: A computer or appliance that runs the home-automation software. Home Assistant can run on Raspberry Pi, Odroid, x86-64 computers, containers, and virtual machines. Home Assistant Green is an appliance option with Home Assistant already installed. See Home Assistant installation options.
  • Coordinator: A Zigbee radio that forms and manages one Zigbee network. It connects to the host, commonly by USB, but supported arrangements vary by software.
  • Sensors: Choose devices for the jobs you need, such as motion, door or window contact, or temperature sensing. Check the exact model and the features you need before buying.
  • Optional routers: Compatible mains-powered Zigbee devices, often smart plugs, can relay network messages and help reach areas with weak coverage.

The host and coordinator are different roles. A computer running Home Assistant does not itself become a Zigbee coordinator unless it has a supported Zigbee radio.

Can you use Zigbee sensors without the manufacturer’s hub?

Often, but the Zigbee label alone does not guarantee that a sensor will work with a particular coordinator and software. Compatibility depends on the exact device and whether the integration supports its standard behavior and any manufacturer-specific features. Verify that the specific model exposes the functions you need, not merely that it can join a Zigbee network.

Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation says it does not maintain an official list of every device that works out of the box; some devices use non-standard features and may need special handling. ZHA also does not support devices that use only the Zigbee Green Power or Zigbee Smart Energy profiles. Review the ZHA documentation and device-specific information before choosing a sensor.

A Zigbee device can be connected to only one coordinator and network at a time. If it was previously paired to another system, it may need to be factory-reset before joining the new network; follow the manufacturer’s reset and pairing instructions.

Choose one Zigbee software route

For a given coordinator and network, choose one gateway application to manage it. ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT are documented options for Home Assistant; they differ in setup and maintenance workflow, so base the choice on support for your exact devices and the configuration you prefer. The available documentation does not establish a universal device-count or feature advantage for either option.

Route How it fits What to check
ZHA Home Assistant’s built-in Zigbee gateway integration. Check support for the exact sensor and any non-standard features. If automatic detection fails, you may need to set the serial device path and radio type.
Zigbee2MQTT An alternative Zigbee gateway; its Home Assistant integration documentation describes MQTT discovery. Choose a supported adapter and follow its onboarding and configuration flow. See Zigbee2MQTT’s guide and its adapter documentation.

Do not expect two applications to operate the same coordinator and network at the same time. If you change routes, plan to configure the new gateway and, where necessary, reset and re-pair devices.

Do you need a Zigbee coordinator?

Yes, for a Home Assistant Zigbee network you need a supported coordinator radio; it is the gateway between the host and Zigbee devices. The coordinator is not the same thing as a sensor manufacturer’s hub. The right adapter depends on your chosen software and connection setup.

Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 is one current option documented for Zigbee 3.0 and Thread. It uses a Silicon Labs MG24 and an ESP32-S3 USB-serial bridge, according to Home Assistant’s ZBT-2 documentation. It cannot run Zigbee and Thread simultaneously. Home Assistant says it recommends dedicating a device to each protocol rather than using multiprotocol operation in the home.

Home Assistant lists Connect ZBT-1 as no longer available and replaced by ZBT-2, so ZBT-1 should not be treated as its current offering. If using a different adapter, confirm that it is supported by your chosen integration and that the host can connect to it.

How to set up and pair the hub

  1. Install the host software. Set up Home Assistant on a supported host or use an appliance such as Home Assistant Green. Make sure the host is running before configuring the radio.
  2. Connect a supported coordinator. For a USB adapter, connect it to the host. If it is not detected automatically, use the integration’s setup flow and select the appropriate serial device and radio type.
  3. Choose ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. Configure only the gateway you intend to use for that coordinator and network. For ZHA, a stable device path such as /dev/serial/by-id is preferable where available.
  4. Start device pairing. Put the integration into its join or pairing mode, then reset or activate the sensor according to the device maker’s instructions. Follow the chosen integration’s documented onboarding process; exact controls vary by device.
  5. Check the reported functions. Confirm that Home Assistant receives the readings or events you need, such as motion, contact state, or temperature, before installing the sensor in its final location.

Improve coverage and reliability

A Zigbee network has one coordinator. Mains-powered router devices can relay messages between it and other devices; many battery-powered sensors act as end devices rather than routers. Add routers only where the layout or observed connection problems justify them.

  • Place the coordinator thoughtfully. Use a USB extension cable to move it away from the host, and avoid placing it next to USB 3.0 equipment. Home Assistant recommends these steps to reduce interference; see its ZHA guidance.
  • Account for the building. Walls, construction materials, placement, and network topology affect radio coverage. There is no reliable universal range figure for every home.
  • Use routers to address weak areas. A compatible mains-powered router can relay messages and improve coverage, but the result depends on its position and the rest of the network.
  • Avoid assuming a fixed capacity. The number of devices a network can handle depends on coordinator hardware and firmware, and on topology—including how many devices connect directly to the coordinator versus through routers.

Which setup should you choose?

If you already have a suitable computer, Raspberry Pi, or virtualized host, start by checking whether it can run Home Assistant and connect to an adapter supported by your preferred gateway. If you want an appliance with Home Assistant already installed, Green is the documented all-in-one host option. In either case, the coordinator remains a separate Zigbee component.

For connectivity, a USB coordinator is a straightforward host-attached approach. Zigbee2MQTT also documents supported GPIO, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet-connected adapter arrangements; verify the specific adapter and configuration with its documentation before choosing a remote connection. For Thread as well as Zigbee, decide whether you need both protocols and account for the ZBT-2 limitation: it cannot operate both simultaneously.

Finally, choose sensors by exact model compatibility and required functions, then add mains-powered routers only if your actual layout needs better coverage. This avoids buying around assumptions about universal compatibility, range, or device capacity.
