Seeed Studio’s XIAO 2-Channel Wi-Fi AC Energy Meter arrives with its meter firmware pre-flashed, according to the manufacturer, and is designed to report two separate AC loads to Home Assistant through ESPHome. It uses current transformers (CTs), so it is aimed at fixed-circuit, appliance, or solar-production monitoring—not simply plugging an appliance into a smart plug.
What the XIAO 2-Channel meter measures
The meter has two independent measurement channels, letting it monitor two loads, such as a pair of fixed appliances or separate electrical circuits. Seeed’s guide lists live, neutral, and protective-earth supply terminals, CT1 and CT2 inputs, Wi-Fi connectivity, and an XIAO ESP32C6. Seeed’s ESPHome projects repository identifies the BL0939 metering chip and says the device can measure current, voltage, and power.

These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independently verified readings. Seeed’s 2025 product announcement additionally claims up to 100A per channel and up to 1% measurement accuracy; no independent accuracy test is established by the cited material.

What “ready-loaded with ESPHome” means
Seeed says the XIAO ESP32C6 is shipped with the energy-meter firmware already flashed. In other words, initial use is intended to involve network provisioning and Home Assistant setup rather than starting by compiling and uploading firmware. The supported integration path is Wi-Fi, ESPHome, and Home Assistant.
If the firmware needs to be reinstalled or upgraded, Seeed documents flashing with its web tool or ESPHome Web using a factory binary. Its flashing instructions specify Chrome or Edge; Firefox is not supported for that flow.

Connect the meter to Wi-Fi and Home Assistant
- Power and connect to the device access point. During first network setup, connect a phone or computer to the Wi-Fi network named
SeeedStudio-2CH-EM. - Enter your home Wi-Fi details. Open
http://192.168.4.1in a browser and provide the credentials for the network the meter should join. - Add the discovered device in Home Assistant. After it joins your home network, look under Settings > Devices & Services for the ESPHome device and add it. Seeed says manual addition by IP address is available if automatic discovery does not find it.
- Check the reported entities. Seeed’s setup guide describes a Home Assistant overview with a lighting-control switch, current-use readings for both channels, power-consumption readings for both channels, and total voltage. It also describes row graphs for recent changes.
Home Assistant Green is one optional host example in Seeed’s guide; it is not a built-in requirement of the meter. The documented integration depends on Home Assistant and the ESPHome connection.
Install the current transformers safely
Each CT measures current around a conductor without requiring the whole load current to pass through the meter. For the documented setup, each CT goes around the load’s live wire, with its arrow pointing from the power source toward the load. Connect the CTs to the corresponding CT1 and CT2 inputs.

The meter’s supply terminals include live (L), neutral (N), and protective earth (PE). This is an AC-wiring installation, not a low-voltage-only setup. Seeed’s guide states: “Always disconnect AC power before wiring.” It also recommends suitable circuit protection, such as a fuse or breaker; periodic checks for wiring wear; and keeping the device away from water and excessive heat. Follow local electrical rules and use a qualified electrician where required.
When two-channel CT monitoring makes sense
Seeed presents solar-production monitoring and individual appliance monitoring as use cases, including hardwired high-load equipment such as HVAC systems or water heaters. A CT installation can suit equipment that does not connect through a conventional plug, and two channels can cover two separate loads. Seeed also describes pairing the meter with its XIAO 2-Channel Wi-Fi AC Relay for control based on measured energy; that relay is an optional companion, not a required part of measurement.

Whether this device is a better fit than a smart plug or panel monitor depends on the installation and the number of circuits to track:

Before choosing, confirm the CTs are included with the specific meter listing or obtain compatible CTs rated for the intended circuit. The product guide describes a 10mA–100A CT-mode range, but a general range does not establish that any particular CT is compatible.

What to check before relying on the readings
- Confirm the installation matches the use case. This is a fixed AC meter with CT inputs, not a plug-in monitor.
- Check the full measurement path. The CT must be installed on the correct live conductor, oriented as specified, and connected to the matching channel.
- Treat accuracy as a claim, not a guarantee. Seeed’s up-to-1% statement is a manufacturer claim; the cited sources do not provide independent calibration results or real-world validation.
- Plan for network recovery. Seeed’s FAQ asks, “What happens if the device is disconnected from Wi-Fi?” It says the module attempts to reconnect and enables its fallback access point if reconnection fails.
