Then define how concurrent writes, retries, expired state, and failed storage are handled. A session ID or a general-purpose “memory” feature alone does not provide authorization or transactional consistency.
Start by separating the kinds of state you need to keep
“Agent state” can mean several things with different lifetimes and recovery needs. Decide which category each piece of data belongs to before choosing a storage mechanism.
- Conversation history: Recent user and agent turns used to continue a discussion. It is typically chronological and may need trimming to fit a model’s context limit.
- Durable knowledge: User or domain facts intended to remain useful across conversations. MongoDB describes this as long-term knowledge distilled across sessions, distinct from short-term conversation history. MongoDB’s memory documentation explains that distinction.
- Workflow progress: The current stage, inputs, completed actions, and references to external side effects for an in-flight task. This is what lets a long-running task recover from an interruption without blindly repeating work.
For each category, establish an owner, retention period, update policy, and retrieval scope. AWS likewise recommends classifying short- and long-term memory so that retrieval is predictable; see the AWS Well-Architected Agentic AI Lens.
Choose one primary way to continue each conversation
A new invocation does not automatically inherit state from an earlier one. Your application must reuse a stored session, retrieve provider-managed state, or provide history that can be replayed. OpenAI’s agent-running guide describes four continuity choices. In most applications, choose one as the primary source of conversation continuity rather than combining them casually: replaying local history while also continuing a server-managed conversation can duplicate context. OpenAI’s guide to running agents describes the options.

| Approach | Useful when | Trade-offs to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Application-managed history | You want control over what is retained and supplied to the agent. | Your application owns storage, replay, history reduction, and any reconciliation. Keep durable facts or task state separately if they must outlive trimmed messages. |
| SDK session stored by the application | You use a framework session abstraction and want to persist it in your own storage. | Store and restore the complete session object using compatible agent/provider configuration; plan storage operations and concurrency behavior. |
| Service-managed conversation state | You want the provider service to retain conversation history and can securely manage its identifiers. | Provider IDs and their scope are provider-specific. Keep the mapping in trusted application storage and avoid replaying the same history independently. |
| Workflow checkpoints | A task spans multiple stages or must resume after a process interruption. | Choose checkpoint boundaries and make replayed steps idempotent so recovery does not repeat external effects. |
These approaches address different concerns: conversation continuity is not the same as durable knowledge or workflow recovery. A system can use a session strategy for dialogue and separate checkpoints for task execution, but it should define how those state sources relate.
Common storage choices for SDK sessions
The OpenAI Agents SDK documentation lists file-backed SQLite, Redis, SQLAlchemy-backed databases, MongoDB, Dapr state stores, and server-managed Conversations API storage. Its guidance positions SQLite for local or simple use, Redis for shared low-latency worker access, and SQLAlchemy or MongoDB when an application already uses those stores or needs multi-process storage. Those are architectural fits, not performance rankings; assess deployment suitability for your own workload. See the Agents SDK session documentation.

- Provider-managed state: Can reduce application responsibility for retaining conversation history, but requires secure handling of provider-specific identifiers and a clear choice about whether local history is also used.
Bind every resumable session to an authenticated owner
Generate a stable application-level identifier for a conversation or task, then store its relationship to the authenticated user or tenant and any provider-specific ID in trusted server-side storage. A session ID is a lookup key, not proof that the caller is allowed to resume the session.
This matters especially when one provider API key or project serves multiple users: a provider-side conversation may be scoped to the shared project rather than an individual end user. On every resume, authenticate the caller and verify that the stored session belongs to that user or tenant before loading state. OpenAI and Microsoft’s documentation describe session persistence and identity considerations in their respective session guidance. Persist the full session payload, not just visible messages
When using a framework session, persist its complete serialized state rather than rebuilding a session from user and assistant text alone. Provider-specific identifiers or other session metadata may be needed to continue correctly. Restore through the framework’s documented deserialization or resume path, using the same compatible agent and provider setup that created the saved state. Microsoft’s guidance puts it plainly: “Persist the full session object, not only message text.” Microsoft Agent Framework session guidance.
A practical application record can include the application session ID, authenticated owner or tenant, serialized framework state or provider conversation ID, a state/schema version, and timestamps used for expiry and operational review. This is an implementation pattern, not a schema mandated by the framework documentation. Keep provider identifiers in server-side storage rather than treating a client-supplied ID as trusted ownership evidence.

Make retries and simultaneous updates explicit
Durable storage prevents state from disappearing with a process, but it does not by itself prevent lost updates when two workers modify the same session. The reviewed framework documentation does not prescribe one cross-database transaction, locking, compare-and-swap, or conflict-resolution scheme.
- Decide whether a session can be updated by more than one worker at a time and define write ordering.
- Use concurrency controls appropriate to your database and application design; do not assume the agent framework supplies cross-backend serializability.
- Test retry behavior, including a worker that crashes after an external action but before recording completion.
- For multi-step work, checkpoint at meaningful stage boundaries and make replayed steps idempotent. AWS identifies non-idempotent replay as a source of duplicate side effects and recommends recovery from a last known-good checkpoint. AWS Well-Architected Agentic AI Lens.
For example, if a workflow sends a payment or creates a support ticket, a recovered run should be able to determine whether that action already succeeded before attempting it again. Persist the relevant operation status or idempotency reference as part of the workflow’s recovery design; the exact mechanism depends on the external service and database.

Plan for old history and delayed memory updates
Conversation histories grow, while models accept bounded context. OpenAI’s SDK and Microsoft’s framework document reducers, compaction, or filtering to limit the history supplied to a model. Make the reduction policy explicit: older messages may be omitted or summarized, but durable facts and in-flight task state should remain available through their own storage when they must survive that reduction. OpenAI Agents SDK session documentation; Microsoft Agent Framework memory guidance.
Also distinguish a saved conversation from facts extracted into long-term memory. AWS and MongoDB describe memory approaches that may classify or distill information across sessions; extraction can be asynchronous. Do not assume that a fact from the latest turn is already available as durable memory on the immediately following turn. If correctness depends on it, keep it in the active session or workflow state until the memory update is confirmed. AWS Well-Architected Agentic AI Lens; MongoDB memory documentation.
Define what happens when saved state cannot be trusted
State can be unavailable, expired, corrupted, or out of sync with an external side effect. Choose the response according to the consequences of acting on stale or incomplete context; there is no universal fallback policy.
Quick Recap
- Stop: Appropriate when proceeding could create an unsafe or costly action.
- Ask for confirmation: Useful when a person can verify missing context or whether a side effect occurred.
- Continue with limits: Consider only when the task remains safe with explicitly reduced context and the agent is not allowed to imply that it restored full state.
- Recover operationally: Monitor memory or state-store health, maintain appropriate redundancy or failover, and provide a recovery path. AWS recommends graceful reduced modes, observability, redundancy/failover, and recovery planning in its Agentic AI Lens.
A practical resume checklist
- Define whether the item being resumed is conversation history, durable knowledge, workflow progress, or a combination with explicit ownership.
- Choose one primary conversation-continuity strategy and select storage suited to your deployment topology and retention needs.
- Create an application-level session or task ID and bind it to an authenticated owner or tenant.
- Persist the full framework session or the provider identifiers required for continuation, along with version and lifecycle metadata.
- On resume, authenticate and verify ownership, then restore using compatible agent/provider configuration.
- Apply a deliberate history-reduction policy without silently discarding facts or workflow state that must remain durable.
- Define concurrency controls, idempotent replay, checkpoint boundaries, and behavior for missing, stale, or inconsistent state.
