Cloudinary optimizes images by applying transformations to delivery URLs or URLs generated by its SDKs. A practical starting point is to resize or crop an image to suit its displayed layout, then use q_auto for automatic quality selection and f_auto for browser-appropriate format delivery. The right responsive approach depends on how much control you need over image widths and how your application builds markup.
How Cloudinary image transformations work
A Cloudinary delivery URL identifies an asset in a product environment and can include transformation parameters such as width, crop behavior, quality, and format. Cloudinary generates a derived image when its transformed URL is first requested, then caches that result on its CDN for later requests. Its SDKs can build transformation URLs and help embed images in application markup. Transformations affect the delivered image; the original asset remains unchanged. Start by matching the image to its layout
Resize to the dimensions the page actually needs, and specify crop instructions when the layout requires a particular aspect ratio or focal area. The appropriate crop and dimensions depend on the design and image; there is no universally correct transformation. A URL can combine sizing or crop instructions with quality and format controls:

Replace <cloud_name> and <public_id> with the values for your Cloudinary asset. In this example, c_fill fills the requested 800-by-600 dimensions by cropping as needed; select crop behavior that suits your image and layout. The example places q_auto and f_auto in separate URL components. Cloudinary says their order does not matter, but do not combine them in one comma-separated component.
What do q_auto and f_auto do?
Choose quality with q_auto
q_auto asks Cloudinary to select quality and encoding based on the image content and delivery conditions. Cloudinary describes it as a general balance; its variants include q_auto:best for a less aggressive choice and q_auto:eco for more aggressive size reduction. These are documented product behaviors, not a guarantee of a particular file-size reduction or visual result on your images. Compare representative assets in your own application before settling on a setting.

If you need explicit control, a fixed quality value is also available. Cloudinary documents a scale from 1 to 100: lower values trade visual quality for smaller files. The appropriate setting depends on the image and its use. See the transformation reference.
Select a format with f_auto
f_auto lets Cloudinary select an output format according to the requesting browser and the formats enabled for the product environment. Possible outputs include AVIF, WebP, or JPEG XL; a visitor may receive a different format from another visitor, and the source extension is used as a fallback when the browser supports none of the enabled alternatives. Do not assume every request will produce the same named format: account configuration and browser support affect the result. Cloudinary documents the details in its image format support guide.

Keep f_auto in delivery-time URL logic. Cloudinary cautions against putting it in an incoming transformation or a named transformation because format selection needs to be resolved for each delivery request.
How to serve responsive Cloudinary images
Responsive delivery is about matching the downloaded image to the space it occupies. Cloudinary describes three approaches. Choose based on how much control you need over candidate widths, the complexity you can maintain, browser support requirements, and how your application handles layout.

Use srcset when markup should control the choices
With srcset, provide several Cloudinary URLs transformed to the widths your layout supports, then let the browser select among them. For example, a page might offer candidates for a narrow content column and a wider desktop layout. The specific widths should reflect your design rather than a generic list. This approach makes the choices explicit but means maintaining the URLs and responsive markup as layouts change.

Use framework logic when the application already owns image sizing
A framework can calculate or select a URL from the space available to an image and set that URL in the rendered interface. This may integrate naturally with an application’s component system, but account for the browser-support limitation Cloudinary notes in its comparison. Test the behavior in the browsers your audience uses.
Use global resizing for simpler setup
Global responsive resizing can provide a baseline for otherwise unresized images by setting a maximum width in product-environment settings. It is less granular than supplying several candidates for each layout, and it applies only when a URL has not already specified a size-changing parameter or used a named transformation, as described in Cloudinary’s default settings guidance.

Defaults can simplify delivery, but they are not universal account behavior. Their availability and effect depend on plan and product-environment settings; check the target account rather than assuming a documented starting value is enabled.
- Cloudinary says default image quality applies to delivered images other than PNGs and PDFs only when other transformations are also applied. URL settings can override the default.
- Default width optimization only downscales; it does not enlarge an image. It is ignored when the URL already specifies a size-changing parameter or uses a named transformation.
- Cloudinary documents initial maximum widths of 828 pixels for smartphones and 1920 pixels for other devices. Both values are configurable, and these are product settings rather than measured performance outcomes.
- Enabling default format or width behavior may increase transformation usage, even when it reduces the amount of image data delivered.

Metadata and operational checks
Image transformations can change more than pixels. Cloudinary says transformed images normally have associated metadata stripped, with documented exceptions. If a downstream workflow needs embedded metadata, choose the retention behavior deliberately: fl_keep_iptc keeps metadata, while fl_keep_attribution retains copyright-related metadata while stripping other content. Cloudinary also cautions that when q_auto is applied, DPI and resolution metadata are effectively stripped; do not rely on those fields in that workflow. See the image optimization guide.
