Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by identifying what “memory problem” means: steadily growing or retained memory, an invalid memory access, or a performance slowdown under memory pressure. Those are different problems, and no single tool diagnoses all of them. Reproduce the symptom, capture evidence with a tool suited to your platform and runtime, trace the cause, then repeat the same workload to verify the fix.
First, classify the symptom
Write down the steps that trigger the problem, the device or operating system, the runtime, and the build configuration. Note whether memory keeps rising, the program crashes around a suspicious read or write, or the application stutters or freezes. This record gives you a repeatable test and helps narrow the tool choice.
- Memory growth or retention: Memory rises over time, or objects remain alive after the feature or screen that used them should have released them. Investigate with allocation profiling or a heap snapshot.
- Invalid access or corruption: A crash, corrupted data, an out-of-bounds access, or use-after-free points toward a memory-error detector suited to the language and platform.
- Stutter or freezes: Allocation faster than garbage collection can reclaim memory may contribute to pauses and skipped frames. Profile allocations and runtime behavior rather than assuming every slowdown is a leak.
A retained leak and an invalid access are not interchangeable diagnoses. A program can retain too much memory without making an invalid access, and an access error can occur without a long-term leak.
Choose evidence that matches the question
A heap dump or memory graph is a snapshot: it shows objects or memory relationships at a particular point. Allocation profiling adds a view of how allocations change over time and can associate them with allocation call stacks. A snapshot can reveal what is still reachable; a profile can help reveal when and where memory use grew. Neither alone necessarily explains why an object remains reachable, so follow references or allocation stacks back to the relevant code.

| Tool or workflow | Where it fits | Evidence or errors it targets | Important limit or cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android Studio heap dump | Android managed heap | Class allocation counts, shallow and retained size, and object references in a snapshot | Capturing a heap dump can temporarily increase Java memory; the snapshot is not a time series. |
| Xcode Debug Memory Graph and Instruments Allocations | Apple apps | Memory graph relationships, allocation stack traces, heap and anonymous virtual-memory allocations by category, and current or highest observed app memory in the Xcode memory report | Simulator’s green memory gauge is not proof of safe memory use on a device: Simulator does not receive the same iOS memory warnings or out-of-memory terminations. |
| Valgrind Memcheck | C/C++ programs in environments supported by Valgrind | Invalid reads and writes, use of uninitialized values, leaks, and invalid frees, with source locations and stack traces | Valgrind Developers’ documentation says Memcheck commonly slows programs by about 10–30 times. |
| Xcode Address Sanitizer | Apple C-based code | Out-of-bounds accesses and use-after-free | Apple documents a 2–3x increase in memory use and 2–5x slowdown. It does not detect leaks or uninitialized-memory use. |
| Android NDK memory-error tools | Android native code | Options include HWASan, GWP-ASan, MTE, and ASan, with different setup, coverage, and device constraints | Selection depends on the current NDK guidance, app bitness, device support, and instrumentation overhead. |
These figures and capabilities are stated in the relevant project or platform documentation, not a shared benchmark. Instrumentation can materially change runtime behavior; use instrumented runs to diagnose bugs, not as ordinary performance baselines.
Investigate growth or suspected retention
Android managed memory
- Run the app through the feature or session that exhibits growth, then capture a heap dump in Android Studio after the relevant objects should have been released.
- Inspect class allocation counts and retained size. Shallow size describes an object itself; retained size helps estimate memory that would become reclaimable if that object and its exclusively retained objects were no longer reachable.
- Follow references from an unexpectedly retained Activity, Fragment, or other object to find what still holds it. Check lifecycle transitions such as rotating the device or switching away from and back to the app.
- Make one targeted code change, repeat the same sequence, and compare the snapshots and retained references.
Android’s documentation recommends extended sessions because a retained leak may take time to become visible and can eventually contribute to the system killing the app process. Account for the temporary increase in Java memory caused by heap capture when interpreting a dump.

Apple apps
Use Xcode’s Debug Memory Graph and allocation stack traces to inspect relationships and connect allocations to call stacks. Use Instruments Allocations when you need to track heap and anonymous virtual-memory allocations by category over time. The Xcode memory report also shows current and highest observed app memory. Do not treat the Simulator gauge as a substitute for observing behavior on a device, since Simulator does not receive the same iOS memory warnings or out-of-memory terminations.
Investigate invalid access in native code
C and C++ with Valgrind Memcheck
Memcheck checks reads and writes and can report invalid accesses, dangerous use of uninitialized values, leaks, and invalid frees. Its reports include source locations and stack traces. Valgrind’s Quick Start Guide recommends compiling with debug information using -g, then examining the first reported error and its stack trace. Address errors in reported order: later reports can be consequences of an earlier fault. The guide notes that Memcheck cannot explain why memory leaked, so use the reference and allocation evidence from a profiler when the cause is retention.

The Valgrind Developers’ documentation puts Memcheck’s typical slowdown at about 10–30 times normal execution. Valgrind also documents Massif, a heap profiler, as running programs about 20 times slower than normal. Treat these as the project’s stated typical costs, not guarantees for every workload or machine.
Android native code
Choose among HWASan, GWP-ASan, MTE, and ASan using the current Android NDK memory-error guide. They are not interchangeable modes: supported app bitness, setup, device availability, and overhead differ. The guide, last updated 2026-03-06 UTC, describes HWASan overhead as approximately 100% CPU, 50% code size, and 10–35% memory. Those are the guide’s stated tradeoffs, not universal measurements. It recommends HWASan for testing and describes GWP-ASan as sampled field detection; check the current guide for implementation constraints before adopting either workflow.

Apple C-based code
Enable Address Sanitizer in the Xcode scheme’s diagnostic settings when investigating out-of-bounds access or use-after-free. Apple documents that it does not detect leaks or uninitialized-memory use. For suspected retention, pair access-error diagnostics with allocation profiling rather than treating a clean sanitizer run as evidence that no leak exists. Apple’s published overhead guidance is a 2–3x memory increase and 2–5x slowdown, so do not use that run as a normal performance measurement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the reproduction strong enough to expose the cause
- Repeat the relevant user flow and include realistic session length; one short run may not expose gradual growth.
- On mobile apps, exercise lifecycle changes such as rotation, backgrounding, returning to the app, or switching screens when those actions are relevant.
- Capture a snapshot after the objects in question should have been released, and compare it with evidence from an earlier point or a repeated run.
- Trace retained references or allocation stacks to code, change one likely cause, and rerun the same steps so the comparison remains meaningful.
- Keep instrumented diagnostic runs separate from ordinary performance baselines because sanitizers and profilers can add substantial CPU, memory, or execution-time overhead.
For Android, allocation can outpace collection and cause pauses or skipped frames; a retained leak may eventually lead to process termination. That makes realistic extended sessions valuable both for observing growth and for connecting it to user-visible symptoms.

Use the tool’s output as evidence, not a verdict
A snapshot tells you what remained at capture time, not by itself why. A rising allocation profile shows a trend, but growth may be expected for a workload. A sanitizer report identifies classes of access errors it is designed to detect, not every possible bug. Verify a diagnosis by connecting the report to a repeatable action sequence and by checking whether the same evidence changes after a targeted fix.
The right workflow is conditional: inspect managed objects with the platform’s heap tools, follow allocation behavior when investigating growth, and use a compatible native memory-error detector for invalid accesses. The title does not specify an operating system, language, or application, so there is no defensible single “best” memory-debugging tool for every reader.
