A Windows WebDAV drive that will not connect usually points to one of three issues: the server or WebClient service is unavailable, authentication or proxy handling blocks the connection, or a WebClient limit affects particular files or folder listings. Start by noting the exact error and whether the problem happens every time, only after sign-in or restart, or only with large files or folders. Then check the endpoint and service before changing authentication or registry settings.
Identify the failure pattern first
Write down the full error message or code, the WebDAV URL, and when the failure occurs. Also check whether the same address works in a browser or another WebDAV client, and whether the drive has ever connected successfully. These clues help distinguish a general connection problem from a reconnect or file-size issue.
- Never maps: Check the URL, server availability, WebDAV configuration, and Windows WebClient service.
- Maps but fails after sign-in or restart: Investigate authentication, proxy behavior, and the server’s supported authentication scheme.
- Small files work but large transfers or folder listings fail: Look into WebClient limits only after basic connectivity is confirmed.
Windows reports “The network path was not found” as error 0x80070035 in one Microsoft-documented scenario. Another documented message is “The operation being requested was not performed because the user has not been authenticated” (error 1244). The wording and likely cause depend on the failure scenario, so use the exact message rather than treating either error as a diagnosis by itself.
Check the WebDAV address, server, and Windows service
Confirm the exact WebDAV URL and that the host name resolves and is reachable. If you do not administer the server, ask its administrator to confirm that the endpoint is available and WebDAV is enabled. Microsoft’s WebDAV Redirector guide lists possible causes of System error 67 (“The network name cannot be found”), including an unavailable or stopped IIS server, a missing client redirector, a stopped WebClient service, disabled WebDAV on the site, or an FQDN/proxy-bypass issue. These are possible causes, not a requirement that every WebDAV server use IIS.

Verify WebClient
Check that the Windows WebClient service is available and running. A stopped service can prevent a mapped WebDAV drive from working. Restarting it may help when the service is stopped or after an approved configuration change, but it will not fix a bad URL, a server-side outage, or every authentication error.
Ask the server administrator to verify the endpoint
If the URL and client service appear correct, have the server owner confirm that WebDAV is enabled and that the configured authentication and transport security are compatible with the connection. Server-side settings cannot be repaired by changing Windows drive-mapping options alone.

For authentication errors, check reconnect and proxy behavior
A drive that maps once but becomes unauthenticated after sign-in or restart may be encountering a credential-forwarding issue rather than a reachability failure. Microsoft explains that the WebDAV redirector uses WinHTTP and, without a proxy, credential sending can depend on whether the request is treated as a local intranet request. Microsoft Learn states: “In a non-proxy network configuration, WinHTTP sends user credentials only in response to requests that occur on a local intranet site.” See Microsoft’s explanation of the unauthenticated mapped WebDAV share error.
Use AuthForwardServerList only for a known, approved host
For a known internal server, an administrator may consider Microsoft’s documented AuthForwardServerList setting to allow credential forwarding to specified URL patterns. Keep entries narrowly scoped: matching servers can receive credentials. Do not use a catch-all pattern or forward credentials to an unknown Internet host. Microsoft says WebClient must be restarted after changing the setting, and that it does not override behavior for Basic or Digest authentication. Have an administrator review registry changes before applying them.

Keep authentication protected and set realistic reconnect expectations
Prefer HTTPS and an authentication method approved by the server administrator. Microsoft says Basic Authentication is disabled by default for the WebDAV Redirector except for SSL sites, and warns that Basic Authentication over a non-SSL connection sends the username and password in clear text. Enabling it over plain HTTP is not a safe general troubleshooting fix.
Windows 7 Basic Authentication reconnects
Microsoft documents a specific Windows 7 case in which a DAV share using Basic Authentication cannot automatically reconnect with saved credentials: WinHTTP cannot retrieve those saved Basic or Digest credentials for the reconnect scenario. The documented options are to disconnect and reconnect, or to use an authentication scheme that supports persistent credentials. This is a Windows 7-specific explanation; confirm the behavior for the Windows version and server configuration in use. See Microsoft’s Windows 7 DAV reconnect guidance.

Check WebClient limits only when files or listings point to them
If the drive connects and ordinary files work but larger transfers fail, or folder enumeration is incomplete, compare the client’s WebClient properties with the server’s behavior. Microsoft’s WebDAV Redirector reference documents FileSizeLimitInBytes and FileAttributesLimitInBytes. The reference lists a default FileAttributesLimitInBytes value of 1,000,000 bytes (1 MB); this is a configuration default, not a recommended value for every server or workload.
Treat registry tuning as a later diagnostic step, not the first response to a connection failure. Record the original value, follow current administrator guidance, and change only the setting tied to the observed symptom. Microsoft warns that incorrect registry changes can cause serious problems; WebClient must be restarted after changes.
