HTTPS in IoT is HTTP communication protected by TLS. It can help protect data exchanged between an IoT device and a server, but it is not a universal IoT protocol or a complete device-security solution. The right design depends on how the device communicates, its constraints, how it is authenticated and onboarded, and how it will be supported over time.

What HTTPS means in IoT

HTTPS is HTTP secured with Transport Layer Security (TLS). TLS is the security layer; HTTPS describes HTTP communication using that protection. When an IoT device sends data to a web service using HTTPS, TLS protects the connection between the communicating endpoints.

That does not mean every IoT device should use HTTPS. The Internet of Things includes diverse devices and applications, and the communication pattern and network matter. RFC 7925 provides IoT-focused profiles for TLS and Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS); it does not require HTTPS as the application protocol. Read RFC 7925.

Can IoT devices use HTTPS?

Yes, if the device and its software can support HTTP over TLS and that exchange fits the application and network. A constrained device may have limited computation, storage, or energy, while network characteristics can also affect protocol choice. RFC 7925 addresses the challenge of fitting Internet security protocols to constrained IoT environments, but the cited material does not establish universal resource requirements or performance figures for HTTPS on devices.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a connection-oriented HTTP exchange, HTTPS may be an appropriate fit. Where the application uses datagram-oriented communication, a DTLS-based design may be more suitable. These are design choices, not a rule that all IoT traffic must use one protocol. Check the current RFC status and errata when selecting an implementation.

HTTPS and TLS: the difference

Term Meaning for IoT
HTTP The application protocol used to exchange web-style requests and responses.
TLS The transport security protocol that protects a connection carrying application traffic.
HTTPS HTTP communication protected with TLS.
DTLS A TLS-related security protocol profile for datagram-oriented communication; RFC 7925 includes IoT-focused TLS and DTLS profiles.

In short, TLS is not synonymous with HTTPS: HTTPS specifically means HTTP protected by TLS. IoT systems can use security protocols and application protocols suited to other communication patterns.

What HTTPS protects—and what it does not

TLS protects communication in transit between endpoints. That protection is useful, but it does not establish that a device is trustworthy, decide whether it should be admitted to a network, or provide every security capability the device needs. A secure connection is one part of a broader system.

  • Device identity and credentials: The system needs a sound way to authenticate devices and manage credentials.
  • Trusted onboarding: A device should be established as trusted before it receives credentials to join a network. NIST SP 1800-36 treats this as a key way to mitigate attacks and addresses lifecycle management as well as onboarding. See NIST SP 1800-36.
  • Requirements and support: Organizations should decide what cybersecurity capabilities they expect from devices and what continuing support they expect from manufacturers or other parties.
  • Lifecycle risk: IoT devices interact with the physical world and vary widely, so security and privacy risks need consideration across their lifecycle—not just when a connection is first configured.

How to choose and secure device-to-server communication

  1. Match the protocol to the exchange. Decide whether the application needs HTTP over TLS or whether a datagram-oriented pattern calls for a DTLS profile. RFC 7925 is the IoT-focused reference for TLS and DTLS profiles: RFC 7925.
  2. Assess the device and network constraints. Evaluate available computation, storage, energy, and network characteristics for the actual device and deployment. Do not assume a general protocol description proves that a particular implementation will fit.
  3. Specify identity and onboarding. Define how the device is authenticated and how it receives credentials before joining the network. NIST SP 1800-36 demonstrates trusted network-layer onboarding mechanisms for IP-based IoT environments; this complements, rather than replaces, application-layer HTTPS/TLS.
  4. Set requirements for suppliers and support. State the security capabilities required of the device and the support expected from manufacturers or other responsible parties. NIST SP 800-213 provides federal-government guidance for establishing these requirements: NIST SP 800-213.
  5. Plan for lifecycle risk. Include ongoing management and privacy and cybersecurity risk in the device’s lifecycle planning. NIST IR 8228 explains how IoT’s diversity and interaction with the physical world distinguish its risk considerations from conventional IT: NIST IR 8228.

How NIST guidance fits different organizations

NIST SP 800-213 is specifically federal-government guidance on establishing cybersecurity requirements for IoT devices and supporting entities. Its concepts may also help other organizations frame procurement and deployment requirements, but its stated scope is federal. The SP 800-213 series explains that the Risk Management Framework remains foundational for federal systems and should be used alongside relevant IoT, operational technology, and cybersecurity guidance when selecting, acquiring, deploying, and using IoT technology.
