Usually, you should first check whether Linux already provides the capability you need. A kernel module is only one way to add functionality: existing kernel support, a userspace interface, FUSE, or eBPF may fit better. If the task requires controlling hardware or integrating with a kernel subsystem and no supported interface can do it, kernel-space code may be necessary.

What a kernel module does—and when it is actually needed

A kernel module is code that can extend kernel functionality at runtime; many device drivers are distributed this way. A module is not automatically required just because a task involves Linux or a device. The kernel may already contain the needed feature as built-in code or an available module, or a subsystem may expose an interface that a userspace program can use.

Kernel-space code becomes relevant when the required operation depends on hardware control or kernel-subsystem integration that an existing interface cannot provide. Even then, writing a loadable module is a separate choice from writing kernel code: functionality may instead be built into a kernel, depending on the project and its configuration.

Check what Linux already supports before writing code

  1. Define the missing capability. Be specific about the device, operation, or behavior you need; “I need a driver” is not yet enough to determine whether a new one is necessary.
  2. Inspect the running kernel and its configuration. Look for the relevant built-in feature or an existing loadable module. The available support depends on the kernel version and configuration.
  3. Check for an existing interface. Determine whether the device or subsystem can be accessed through a supported userspace interface, or whether a framework already covers the job.
  4. Only then choose an implementation. If you need kernel integration, identify the relevant bus and driver model rather than treating an arbitrary userspace process as interchangeable with a driver.

When an existing module exposes parameters, they can be supplied on the kernel command line; after the module is loaded, its parameters appear under /sys/module/<name>/parameters/. The kernel documentation describes this behavior in its kernel parameters guide.

Compare the practical options

Option Where the code runs or lives When it fits Key constraint
Existing kernel support Already built into the kernel or available as a loadable module The required capability is already provided by the kernel or a driver Availability depends on the running kernel’s version and configuration.
Userspace interface In a userspace program using an interface exposed by a device or subsystem The required operation can be performed through that supported interface It cannot substitute for kernel integration or hardware control that the interface does not expose.
FUSE Filesystem implementation in userspace, with a kernel component A suitable filesystem can be implemented through the Filesystem in Userspace framework FUSE is not kernel-free: its components include fuse.ko, a userspace library, and a mount utility.
eBPF Programs run within the kernel’s supported eBPF framework Runtime instrumentation or an extension is supported by an appropriate eBPF program type and attachment point It avoids changing kernel source and loading a conventional module, but is limited to supported types and hooks.
New kernel code In the kernel, built in or packaged as a loadable module The job requires hardware control or kernel-subsystem integration that existing support and interfaces do not provide It must fit the relevant driver model and kernel build, configuration, and compatibility requirements.

When FUSE is a fit—and what it does not replace

FUSE lets a filesystem be implemented in userspace, which can be appropriate when the task is filesystem behavior rather than a missing hardware driver or kernel subsystem function. The Linux kernel FUSE documentation describes the framework as including the kernel module fuse.ko, a userspace library, and a mount utility. SSHFS is one example in the official documentation.

Because FUSE still uses a kernel component, it is not an answer to a strict requirement for no kernel module at all. It is an alternative to implementing the filesystem itself as bespoke kernel code.

When eBPF can avoid a conventional module

For supported instrumentation or runtime extensions, eBPF may provide a route that does not require changing kernel source code or loading a conventional kernel module. The kernel documentation describes eBPF as “a kernel mechanism to provide a sandboxed runtime environment in the kernel for runtime extension and instrumentation without changing kernel source code or loading kernel modules.” See the Linux BPF documentation.

That does not mean eBPF can replace every driver or kernel extension. The task must match a supported eBPF program type and attachment point. If it requires a different form of hardware control or driver integration, eBPF may not expose the necessary capability.

If kernel-space driver code is required

A driver is connected to the kernel’s driver model and, where relevant, the bus that discovers and manages the device. Registration, matching, and lifecycle are part of that integration; a userspace process is not a drop-in replacement for code that must participate in it. The kernel driver model documentation explains this relationship.

Before implementing a driver, pin down the target kernel version, configuration, hardware interface, and distribution. Module build compatibility and licensing matter: the kernel enforces restrictions on use of GPL-only symbols. Distribution signing and packaging policies vary, so check the policies for the target distribution rather than assuming a universal rule.

Decide with the actual requirement in view

  • The capability already exists: enable or use the existing kernel feature or module rather than duplicating it.
  • A userspace interface is sufficient: use that interface instead of adding kernel code.
  • The job is a suitable filesystem: consider FUSE, accepting its kernel and userspace components.
  • The job is supported runtime instrumentation or extension: check whether eBPF has the necessary program type and attachment point.
  • The job needs unavailable hardware control or subsystem integration: investigate kernel driver code and its bus, driver model, build, licensing, and distribution requirements.

Without a named device, filesystem, kernel version, or distribution, there is no responsible way to prescribe a particular driver implementation or promise a specific eBPF hook. The right first question is not “How do I write a module?” but “What capability is missing, and what supported interface already provides it?”
