Capacitor failure is one possible cause of faults in aging electronics, but it is not inevitable—and a failed capacitor may not show visible damage. In its April 12, 2019 article, Hackaday invited vintage-computing enthusiasts to describe what they had encountered, rather than presenting a diagnostic standard or controlled survey.

What the Hackaday article asks

Brian Benchoff’s article poses the question: “What is your experience with broken, dead, and abused capacitors?” It focuses on what people have seen in vintage computers and other aging electronics. Its value is as a record of repair experiences and observations, not as a measure of how often capacitors fail.

Hackaday also cautions that “not every capacitor will leak, or go bad.” A fault in an older device can have other causes, and a capacitor’s age alone does not establish that it is defective.

Why outcomes differ

The article points to three contextual factors: capacitor type, the device or board, and storage history. It gives equipment exposed to large seasonal temperature changes as an example of a different storage history. These are useful distinctions when comparing repair stories, but the article does not quantify how much any one factor changes failure risk.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Capacitor type: The article discusses electrolytic capacitors, but its account should not be generalized to every capacitor technology.
  • Device or board: Different equipment can use different parts and circuit designs, so an observation from one board is not a universal diagnosis.
  • Storage conditions: Where and how a device was stored can be relevant context; the article offers no controlled comparison or risk estimate.

What visible damage can—and cannot—tell you

Hackaday describes electrolytic capacitors with leakage or a split vent, as well as components that are out of specification. Goo or a visibly opened vent can be a sign of failure, but not every defective capacitor will have obvious external damage. Conversely, visual appearance alone is not a complete test of whether a component meets the circuit’s requirements.

The article also recounts a “capacitor-plague” period, saying that the defective capacitors it discusses were made between 1999 and 2007 and that problems began appearing around 2002. Those dates and the proposed electrolyte-related mechanism are claims reported in the 2019 article; the article does not provide independent prevalence figures or establish that all capacitors from those years are affected. What its motherboard repair example demonstrates

For a motherboard repair, the article describes choosing replacement capacitors by capacitance, voltage rating, and physical dimensions, then using a soldering iron and desoldering braid. These are the selection points and tools in that example, not a complete component-selection checklist or a procedure for every board.

A replacement must suit the specific circuit and equipment. Before replacing a part, consult the device’s service documentation and identify the required component specifications; matching only the three characteristics in the example may not be sufficient. The Hackaday article does not name a particular motherboard, replacement model, or universally suitable part.

How to use repair anecdotes responsibly

When comparing reports of capacitor trouble, note the capacitor type, the device or board, and the equipment’s storage history. Distinguish visible leakage or a split vent from a component found to be out of specification, and avoid treating one repair story as a failure-rate estimate. Hackaday’s article offers no named prevalence statistic, controlled test, or device-specific service guidance.
