A motor receiving step commands is not proof that the printer has measured where its carriage or platform actually moved. Klipper’s documented input shaping is different: it changes motion commands to reduce vibration and ringing, and Klipper explicitly describes it as open-loop control.
What closed-loop control means on a 3D printer
A motion controller sends commands to motors. In ordinary stepper motion, the controller schedules steps, but a scheduled step is only a command; by itself, it does not verify that the physical axis reached the intended position. A closed-loop position system adds a sensor—typically an encoder—that reports motor rotation or axis displacement back to the controller. The controller can compare the reported position with the commanded position and respond to an error, if its electronics and firmware support that behavior.
The sensor’s location matters. A motor-mounted encoder measures motor rotation; a linear encoder can measure movement along an axis. Those measurements are not interchangeable in every mechanical arrangement: feedback about motor rotation does not necessarily establish the exact carriage or nozzle position if motion is lost elsewhere in the mechanism.
Closed-loop feedback and input shaping solve different problems
| Approach | What it measures or uses | Main purpose | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open-loop stepper motion | The controller schedules motor steps; there is no measured axis-position correction established by that fact alone. | Move the printer according to commanded motion. | A command does not verify that the physical axis reached its intended location. |
| Input shaping | Resonance measurements may be used to tune a shaped motion command. | Reduce vibration-related ringing and artifacts. | Klipper describes its input shaping as open-loop. Shaping balances residual vibration against smoothing and can constrain speed or acceleration. |
| Closed-loop position control | An encoder reports actual motor or axis position to a controller. | Detect and potentially correct motion-position error. | It requires compatible sensors, electronics, firmware, mechanics, and tuning. |
Klipper’s documentation says its host processor calculates movements, schedules stepper events, transmits them to a microcontroller, and has that microcontroller execute the events on schedule. That architecture description does not establish a position-feedback loop. Klipper puts the distinction plainly: “Input shaping is an open-loop control technique which creates a commanding signal that cancels its own vibrations.” Klipper’s resonance compensation documentation

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Input shaping can reduce ringing, also called ghosting, echoing, or rippling, and may allow higher print speeds while retaining quality; the result depends on the printer and tuning. Encoder feedback instead concerns whether measured movement matches commanded position. Neither approach should be treated as a substitute for the other.
What Klipper’s accelerometer workflow does—and does not do
Klipper documents ADXL345, MPU-9250, and LIS2DW-compatible accelerometers for measuring resonance frequencies and automatically tuning input shapers. An accelerometer in this workflow measures vibration; it does not report nozzle, carriage, or axis position and does not, by itself, close a motion-position loop. Installation depends on the specific accelerometer module and controller board. Klipper notes that setup may involve soldering and crimping; ADXL345 and LIS2DW connections need SPI-capable hardware, and a 5V microcontroller setup may require suitable voltage regulation and level shifting. Check the board, module pinout, voltage handling, and firmware instructions together before buying or wiring a module. An ADXL345 module is an optional measurement tool for resonance tuning—not an encoder, a closed-loop controller, or a guarantee of better prints.
Mechanical problems still matter
Input shaping compensates for vibration in commanded motion; it cannot make a weak or poorly adjusted mechanism mechanically sound. Klipper identifies possible ringing causes such as an insufficiently rigid frame, loose or springy belts, alignment problems, and heavy moving mass. Its guidance is to inspect and address mechanical causes where possible before relying on software compensation. Klipper’s resonance compensation documentation

What an encoder-based printer example demonstrates
A 2018 paper published by the Society for Imaging Science and Technology, “Development of a Closed-loop Control System for the Movements of the Extruder and Platform of a FDM 3D Printing System,” describes a research printer with linear encoders on the X, Y, and Z axes and an added arrangement to process step and encoder signals. It is a concrete example of encoder-based position control in an FDM system, not evidence that encoder feedback is supported by all—or most—current consumer printers. The 2018 proceedings paper
For that implementation, the paper reports a maximum encoder resolution of 0.005 mm, an encoder rated at 8000 pulses per revolution, and a comparison with 3200 microsteps per revolution. These are figures for the paper’s hardware and design; they are not general printer accuracy specifications, nor do they predict performance for another machine.

What to check before considering motion-feedback hardware
There is no basis here for ranking current commercial printers or claiming broad market adoption of encoder feedback. A specific printer or retrofit needs its own compatibility evidence. Evaluate these points before choosing hardware:
- What position is sensed? Establish whether the encoder measures motor rotation or actual axis displacement.
- Can the controller use the feedback? Verify that the electronics and firmware accept encoder readings at useful control rates and can act on position error.
- Do the parts work together? Check encoder, driver, controller, firmware, and printer-mechanics compatibility rather than relying on a product category label such as “closed-loop stepper.”
- What installation and calibration are required? Account for mounting, alignment, wiring, and tuning; a sensor that is installed poorly may not provide useful axis feedback.
- What outcome is documented? Look for evidence about error detection and correction, print quality, speed, cost, and reliability for the exact system. The existence of an encoder alone does not establish those results.
For a Klipper resonance-tuning setup, verify the exact accelerometer-to-board connection and electrical requirements in Klipper’s documentation. For encoder-based control, seek current documentation from the printer, controller, and firmware makers for the exact combination; the cited research prototype does not establish compatibility for a consumer printer.
