For cards and other paper memorabilia, use individual sleeves made from stable, verified plastics; keep items in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, leaks, and flood risk; and handle them as little as practical. A binder makes cards easier to organize and view, while a box can suit items you rarely handle—but safe materials and a stable storage environment matter more than the format. These paper-preservation principles do not replace material-specific conservation advice for jerseys, leather balls, or other three-dimensional collectibles.
Choose sleeves and enclosures by material, not marketing
For sports cards and paper items, choose sleeves or enclosures made from uncoated polyethylene, polypropylene, or polyester. Check the product’s material specification; the word “archival” alone does not identify what the plastic is made of or whether it has coatings or additives.
Avoid PVC and unidentified plastics for long-term storage. The National Archives warns about photographs and printed materials, including baseball cards: “Avoid the use of PVC plastics–they generate acids which can fade the photograph in time.” It also notes that printed images can transfer to plastic. Choose between binder and box storage
Neither format is inherently safest for every collection. The guidance available for photographs and paper collections supports suitable individual enclosures and careful handling, but does not directly compare trading-card binder pages with storage boxes. Choose the format that fits how often you view the cards and how well you can protect them from pressure, environmental hazards, and unnecessary handling.

In either format, a sleeve can provide a barrier and support during handling. Albums and boxes do not compensate for unsuitable contact materials or poor storage conditions. Control the storage environment and water risk
Keep cards and paper memorabilia in a cool, dry, stable location. Avoid damp basements, hot attics, garages with extreme conditions, and areas near pipes, leaks, or likely flooding. Where water intrusion is possible, store items off the floor. A plastic bin cannot correct an unsuitable room; humidity trapped inside plastic storage can increase mold risk.

For family papers and photographs, the National Archives recommends relative humidity below 65% and temperature below 75°F. Those are its preservation recommendations for paper collections, not universal specifications for every sports collectible. Limit light when displaying cards or paper items
Keep display pieces out of direct sunlight and limit how long they are exposed when they are not being viewed. Light damage accumulates and is generally irreversible. The Library of Congress explains: “Light damage is cumulative and follows the reciprocity principle.” Its collections-care guidance notes that reducing ultraviolet and infrared radiation and using suitable UV-absorbing glazing can help, but visible light also contributes to damage. Glazing is only one part of display protection. Consider how the object is supported, whether the frame or mount puts pressure on it, and whether the display can be bumped, dropped, or accessed by others. The cited light guidance concerns collections generally; it does not establish a particular frame or mount as safe for every card or memorabilia item.

Paper-preservation guidance is relevant to printed cards, tickets, programs, and photographs, but it does not establish a safe cleaning or mounting method for every collectible. A signed jersey, leather ball, autographed item, or framed object may need advice specific to its materials and condition. Do not apply cleaners, leather conditioners, adhesives, or improvised mounts based only on general paper-storage recommendations.
