Yes—NVIDIA neural texture compression (NTC) can reduce the memory occupied by textures, but only when a game or renderer implements it, and the result depends on which NTC mode it uses. In NVIDIA’s SDK example, on-sample inference cuts the resident texture footprint; on-load inference saves disk and transfer space but uses as much VRAM as the example’s BCn textures after conversion.

What neural texture compression does

Conventional block compression stores texture data in formats such as BCn, which GPUs can sample directly. NTC instead stores a compact learned representation of material textures and uses a small neural network to reconstruct texture values when needed. NVIDIA’s 2023 paper describes compressing multiple material textures and their mipmap chains together, with random access intended to work much like GPU block texture compression. The trade-off is a smaller texture representation in exchange for neural inference during rendering. NVIDIA Research’s paper and project page show the technique on demonstrated assets, not as a guaranteed result for every game.

For those examples, NVIDIA Research describes up to two additional levels of detail, or 16 times as many texels at a low bitrate. Its project-page comparison shows NTC at four times the resolution and 16 times the texels of the displayed BC high example while using 30% less memory. Those figures apply to the paper’s assets and settings; they should not be read as a universal compression ratio. NVIDIA’s publication record dates the work to August 6, 2023, lists SIGGRAPH 2023, and notes an honorable mention in the technical papers awards. NVIDIA Research

Which NTC mode can reduce VRAM?

The distinction is whether the game reconstructs texture values during sampling or converts them back to a conventional format as textures load. NVIDIA’s SDK uses a 2K-by-2K texture bundle example, excluding mip chains, to show the difference:

Representation or mode Disk size PCIe traffic VRAM use
Raw images 32 MB 32 MB 32 MB
BCn 12 MB 12 MB 12 MB
NTC on-load 2.50 MB 2.50 MB 12 MB after BCn transcoding
NTC on-sample 2.50 MB 2.50 MB 2.50 MB

These are figures for the SDK’s example bundle, not a benchmark of a released game. They show why “NTC saves VRAM” needs a mode attached: on-sample inference is the mode that lowers the example’s resident texture footprint. On-load inference shrinks the stored and transferred data, then expands it to BCn for use, leaving VRAM at the BCn level. NVIDIA RTXNTC SDK documentation

How large could the savings be?

NVIDIA announced RTX NTC on January 6, 2025, claiming it can save up to 7x more VRAM or system memory than traditional block-compressed textures at the same visual quality. “Up to” is NVIDIA’s maximum vendor claim, not an independently established result across games. Actual savings depend on the assets, baseline format, rendering path, and whether inference happens on sample or on load. NVIDIA’s RTX NTC announcement

A separate NVIDIA OptiX technical-blog demonstration gives a production-scene example: more than 100 8K UDIM textures with five layers each would take more than 32 GB uncompressed, while the illustrated NTC footprint was less than 3 GB. NVIDIA says the compressed footprint was about half the size of BC-compressed textures. The scene was rendered on a 16 GB GeForce RTX 5080. This is a specific NVIDIA demonstration, not evidence that every game or scene will achieve the same ratio. NVIDIA OptiX technical blog

Texture memory is only one part of a game’s GPU memory use. Geometry, render targets, shaders, acceleration structures, and other allocations also occupy VRAM, so a reduction in texture memory does not translate directly into an equal reduction in total VRAM use.

What developers need to integrate NTC

NTC is a developer-side technology, not a switch a player can turn on for any game. NVIDIA’s SDK includes a compression and decompression library, a command-line tool, an interactive explorer, and a sample renderer. It supports Windows and Linux configurations with DirectX 12 or Vulkan, subject to the API and driver caveats in the repository. NVIDIA RTXNTC SDK

The SDK’s hardware guidance varies by operation:

  • On-load decompression: Shader Model 6 hardware is the stated minimum; NVIDIA Turing RTX 2000-series and newer are recommended.
  • On-sample inference: Shader Model 6 hardware is listed as functional, but very slow; NVIDIA Ada RTX 4000-series and newer are recommended.
  • Compression: NVIDIA Turing RTX 2000-series is the stated minimum, with Ada RTX 4000-series or newer recommended.

These are SDK guidance, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or practical performance in a finished game. The implementation and workload matter. The SDK also describes Cooperative Vector paths that can accelerate inference on newer GPUs; its DirectX 12 LinAlg/Cooperative Vector path is marked preview/testing-only in the repository, so developers should check the current requirements before relying on it. Will NTC help in games you already own?

Not unless the game’s renderer ships an NTC implementation and uses suitable texture assets. A compatible GPU alone does not make an existing game use neural texture compression, and the NVIDIA materials establish an SDK and demonstrations—not broad NTC support in retail games or a user-facing setting for existing titles. For players, the practical question is whether an individual game developer has adopted the technology, not simply whether the graphics card meets the SDK’s hardware guidance.
