An Amiga 1000 that asks for its Kickstart disk has reached one stage of startup; it has not yet proved that the floppy drive or the rest of the computer is healthy. The most reliable way to approach a restoration is to note exactly what the machine does, then follow the Commodore service manual’s separate checks for power, video, disk operation and keyboard—changing one variable at a time.
Before powering up, record what you have
Photograph the computer, its connectors, labels, board revisions and any visible modifications before taking anything apart. Record the region and mains rating printed on the actual power supply; do not assume these from the case or a previous owner’s description. These steps preserve useful clues and help avoid connecting equipment on the basis of a guess.
Start with the machine’s observed symptom rather than replacing parts preemptively. A blank display, a missing Kickstart request, a drive that will not read, and a keyboard fault point to different stages. The 1985 Commodore Amiga Computer Model 1000 Assembly Level Repair manual treats startup, power, video, system drive and keyboard as distinct service checks.
What the A1000’s startup sequence can tell you
For an initial check, the Commodore manual says to connect the keyboard, a mouse if available, and a monitor, leaving other devices disconnected. On power-up, its expected observations are a red LED that blinks and then remains lit, a running fan, a display that progresses through startup colors, and a hand asking for the Kickstart disk. These are the manual’s diagnostic checkpoints, not guaranteed timings for every restored machine.

If that expected sequence does not occur, the manual directs the technician toward power-supply checks. The important distinction is between observing a symptom and concluding a cause: a particular screen color alone does not establish that the WCS, drive or another component has failed. Record the last stage reached and use the corresponding service procedure.
Why the Kickstart request is not a clean bill of health
The A1000 has an unusual boot path: its early boot ROM requests Kickstart on floppy and loads the system image into a 256 KB writable control store (WCS). Seeing the Kickstart request therefore tells you that startup reached that point; it does not verify that the disk can be read successfully, that the drive works reliably, or that the system will complete loading.

A restoration account from LinuxJedi describes drive and WCS symptoms as separate troubleshooting possibilities. It is a machine-specific example, not evidence that a particular color or prompt universally identifies either fault. Keep the boot architecture in mind, but confirm a suspected problem with systematic checks rather than a single display observation.
Separate disk and drive problems
A bad or unsuitable disk can look like a drive fault, and drive trouble can interrupt startup even when earlier stages appear normal. Where possible, change only one variable at a time: try known-good media in the computer, or test the drive with known-good equipment. The Commodore manual’s drive procedure uses Kickstart and Workbench disks, a blank or test disk, and known-good equipment in preliminary checks.

- Protect originals. Before beginning the manual’s volume-disk tests, slide the disk’s write-protect tab. The manual instructs technicians to protect disks during these tests.
- Use media as a controlled test. A blank 3.5-inch double-density disk can serve as a test consumable where the procedure calls for one, but check its format and physical condition; the format alone does not guarantee that a modern disk is suitable.
- Substitute one known-good part at a time. If you have a known-good disk or drive, use it to separate a media problem from a drive problem rather than swapping several components together.
A LinuxJedi restoration report describes a drive failing even though another part of that system appeared healthy. Treat it as a useful reminder that faults can be localized—not proof of a common A1000 failure. A Kickstart disk request by itself is not a drive test.
Keep power-supply inspection separate from electrical repair
A visual inspection can reveal damage, but it is not the same as checking supply signals. The Commodore manual’s power procedure specifies oscilloscope measurements, making that work a service-level electrical test rather than a casual first-startup check. If you do not have the relevant equipment and experience, do not treat opening or probing a power supply as a routine restoration step.

One LinuxJedi restoration report describes a cracked safety capacitor in that particular power supply. That is a reason to inspect an individual unit appropriately, not evidence that every A1000 supply has the same defect or needs the same recap. Decide on component replacement from the actual supply’s condition and a suitable repair diagnosis, not from a universal rule.

The Commodore manual’s keyboard check is straightforward after the system can load software: open Notepad, test every key, and check the Caps Lock LED. If a key operates incorrectly, the manual recommends retrying with a replacement keyboard to distinguish a keyboard problem from a problem elsewhere in the computer.

The Amiga Developer CD hardware reference for the keyboard interface identifies four primary connections: +5 V, ground, KCLK and KDAT. The clock line is unidirectional; the data line is shared and uses open-collector signaling. That arrangement helps explain why a bad cable or interface connection can produce a different fault from a failed key matrix. Check those possibilities separately rather than assuming every keyboard symptom is a bad key.
Choose the next check by the failure stage

The table is a way to choose a diagnostic direction, not a set of guaranteed diagnoses. The service manual provides procedures, while individual restoration reports illustrate possible faults; neither establishes controlled success rates or a universally best repair path.
Use upgrade-specific instructions only when they apply
The Rejuvenator manual is supplemental guidance for A1000 systems with that upgrade. Its installation and boot checks are relevant if the computer actually has a Rejuvenator installed; they are not requirements for restoring a stock A1000.
