Create an image-free Ajax loading icon with a CSS border ring and a rotating @keyframes animation. CSS draws the spinner; your request-handling code must show it while work is pending and hide it on success or failure. The example below also provides a text status and respects reduced-motion preferences.
Build the spinner with HTML and CSS
Add a status container with a visual spinner and readable loading text:

</div>The spinner is marked aria-hidden="true" because the adjacent text communicates the same state. The wrapper’s role="status" and polite live-region setting let assistive technology receive the status without treating the spinning shape as meaningful content.
Use borders to create the ring, then rotate it continuously:

}The transparent section makes the ring appear to turn. Change the dimensions, border width, and text color to fit your interface. The 0.8-second duration is an example value, not a required standard.
Show and hide it with the Ajax request
The CSS animation does not know whether a request is pending. Your application code must control visibility at the start and at every completion path, including errors. For example, toggle a class or a hidden attribute on the loading container when the request begins, and remove it in the request’s success and failure handling. If the request can be cancelled, handle that path too.

Keep the loading text in sync with the visual indicator. A spinner communicates indeterminate activity; it does not report how much work is complete. When the operation has measurable progress that matters to the user, use a progress indicator that can communicate that measurement instead.
Respect reduced-motion preferences
The prefers-reduced-motion: reduce media query matches a user or device preference to remove, reduce, or replace motion-based animation; MDN also documents no-preference as the alternative value. See MDN’s prefers-reduced-motion reference.

The example stops rotation for users who request reduced motion while retaining the text status. W3C’s Technique C39 gives this media query as one way to address WCAG 2.3.3, Animation from Interactions. W3C notes that techniques are examples, not requirements; conformance depends on the criterion itself. Its test procedure includes enabling the reduced-motion setting and checking that non-essential animation is suppressed. Read W3C Technique C39 and Understanding WCAG 2.3.3 for context. MDN likewise advises considering a way to pause or disable animation: CSS performance optimization.

This spinner rotates with transform rather than repeatedly changing its size or position. MDN explains that animations affecting dimensions, positioning, or layout can trigger reflow and repaint, while transforms and opacity can avoid those effects. For a small, isolated spinner, a transform is a straightforward choice; it is not a guarantee that every animation will be composited by the GPU.

Avoid adding will-change preemptively. MDN recommends treating it as a last resort for an observed performance problem, and notes that larger or more numerous animations can use additional processing resources.
