Use Apple’s Move to iOS transfer during your iPhone 17 Pro Max’s initial setup. It can move many common items—including contacts, messages, photos, calendars, and WhatsApp messages and media—but not every Android app or its private data. If you have already finished setting up the iPhone, you must either erase it to use Move to iOS or move content manually.
Before you start
- Connect both phones to power and turn on Wi-Fi on the Android phone.
- Check that the Android content you want to move, including content on an external microSD card, will fit in the iPhone’s available storage.
- Update Chrome on Android first if you want its bookmarks transferred.
- Move to iOS can use a compatible USB-C cable to connect the phones directly; Apple says this can make the transfer faster. The cable is optional and must work with both devices. See Apple’s Move from Android to iPhone instructions.
Choose the transfer path that fits your Android phone

If the app is unavailable in Google Play, Apple provides separate Move to iOS guidance. For the app-free option, follow the prompts shown on both devices; eligibility is device-specific.
Transfer with the Move to iOS app
- Turn on the new iPhone 17 Pro Max and follow setup until you reach Transfer Your Apps & Data. If prompted, choose to set up without another Apple device, then select From Android.
- On the iPhone, select Transfer with App. On Android, open Move to iOS, accept the prompts, and grant the permissions it requests.
- Continue on the iPhone until a connection code appears. Enter that code on Android. The iPhone creates a temporary Wi-Fi network; join it when prompted.
- Choose the content to transfer on Android and start the move. Keep both phones near each other and connected to power. Leave Move to iOS open on Android and wait until the loading bar on the iPhone finishes.
- Finish the remaining iPhone setup prompts. The Android app may say the transfer is complete before the iPhone’s progress bar has finished, so use the iPhone’s bar as the signal to continue.
Apple’s instructions describe a six- or ten-digit connection code in the app flow. Transfer time depends on how much content is being moved; Apple does not promise a fixed duration.

- Contacts, message history, and SMS messages
- Camera photos and videos, plus photo albums
- Files and folders
- Accessibility and display settings
- Web bookmarks and mail accounts
- WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, call history, and calendars
Some free Android apps may be matched if they are available in both Google Play and Apple’s App Store and support the feature. Matched apps can then be downloaded from the App Store. This does not mean every Android app—or its private data—will transfer. For app-specific data, Apple advises contacting the app developer.
Music, books, and PDFs need to be moved manually. Apple’s manual-transfer instructions also recommend adding supported mail, contacts, and calendar accounts to the iPhone, using a computer or cloud service for photos, videos, documents, music, books, and PDFs, and installing iPhone versions of apps from the App Store.

If iPhone setup is already complete
Move to iOS is available as part of initial iPhone setup. To use it after setup is finished, Apple says you must erase the iPhone and start over. Erasing removes data already on the iPhone, so first confirm that anything you want to keep is backed up. If you do not want to erase the phone, use Apple’s manual-transfer approach instead; the available method depends on the content.
If Move to iOS gets stuck or transfers only some data
- The transfer stops or content is missing: Keep Move to iOS open on Android. Switching to another app or answering a call before the transfer finishes can prevent content from transferring.
- The phones disconnect: Keep them close and plugged in. Restart both devices, turn off mobile data on Android, and disable Android settings that automatically switch Wi-Fi networks. Apple also suggests forgetting known Wi-Fi networks and trying again.
- The iPhone runs out of space: Check that the Android data fits in the iPhone’s available storage. Apple says to erase the iPhone and retry if the transfer was incomplete because of storage limits; back up anything already on the iPhone before erasing.
- A USB-C transfer will not start: Android may show a prompt requiring you to change USB settings before Move to iOS can begin.

SIM and eSIM activation
During migration, you may be able to activate your phone number and SIM or eSIM, or you may be directed to your carrier’s website to finish activation. The app-free process also includes an eSIM transfer step for eligible devices. Support depends on the carrier, Android model, country, and plan, so check with your carrier and phone manufacturer for your specific setup.
