On May 14, 2024, the Overture Maps Foundation said its membership had grown to 28 organizations, up from four founding members 18 months earlier. The new members and interested sectors reflected demand for shared map data well beyond traditional mapping. That 28-member figure is historical: The Linux Foundation reported 50 members on July 13, 2026.
What is Overture Maps Foundation?
Overture Maps Foundation is a collaborative project to build interoperable open map data: a shared geographic base that organizations can use and extend with their own information. Its stated approach combines community-built data such as OpenStreetMap with AI-derived, government, and open commercial sources, then validates and organizes the information into documented themes. The goal is to reduce the work of assembling a usable base map independently.
A key part of that approach is the Global Entity Reference System (GERS), a system of identifiers intended to help organizations link their own data to map entities. For example, a business could connect an internal record to a place or address in a map dataset without relying only on a name that might be spelled or formatted differently.
Overture’s data is distributed in cloud-native GeoParquet files with documented schemas. AWS’s Registry of Open Data describes monthly updates and access to the dataset in AWS storage. Overture’s 2026 retrospective also lists access through AWS, BigQuery, Snowflake, and Databricks.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why did Overture’s membership attract more industries?
The May 14, 2024 announcement named new members including AddressCloud, Esri, Hyundai Motor Group, Niantic Labs, Nearmap, Precisely, PTV Group, SafeGraph, and Tripadvisor. It described interest across geospatial services and GIS, consumer mapping and local search, ride sharing, social media, insurance, logistics, autonomous vehicle navigation, and augmented reality.
That range makes sense because many services depend on geographic information, even when maps are not their main product. A logistics firm may need addresses and transport networks; an insurer may use building information; a navigation service may need roads and places; and an augmented-reality application may need a consistent representation of the physical world.

Membership or interest does not mean every named organization launched a product powered by Overture data. It indicates participation in or interest in developing a shared data foundation, not a guarantee of production use in every sector. Marc Prioleau, Overture’s executive director at the time, said the foundation was seeing “a diverse set of industries who want to collaborate on open map data as a baselayer.”
Who uses Overture Maps data?
Overture’s 2026 retrospective says Meta, Esri, and Microsoft incorporated Overture datasets into products. The Linux Foundation’s announcement of July 13, 2026, describes Microsoft using buildings, addresses, and administrative divisions. It reports several-percentage-point gains in address accuracy, improved building coverage, and development cycles shortened from months to weeks. Those outcomes are claims reported by the Linux Foundation, not independently audited or comparable benchmark results in the cited material.

The Linux Foundation announcement also says members contribute aggregated signals such as pickups and drop-offs, ratings, traffic patterns, and interactions at physical locations. It cites a June 2026 update to operating-status fields for U.S. places as an example of an update informed by such contributions. These examples show how organizations may contribute information as well as use shared data; they do not establish that all members contribute the same types of data.
How has Overture Maps data changed since 2024?
Overture’s July 2024 general-availability announcement reported 2.3 billion building footprints and nearly 54 million places worldwide at that time. Its retrospective published in 2026 reported approximately 2.6 billion building footprints, more than 70 million places of interest, more than 740 million kilometers of transportation segments and connectors, and more than 460 million addresses across dozens of countries. Overture says the data is updated monthly. These are organization-reported totals, not independently verified counts.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Overture Maps data free to use?
The dataset is presented as open data, but “open” does not mean every component has identical terms or can be used without checking its license. AWS’s Registry of Open Data lists CDLA Permissive v2 generally and notes that qualifying databases derived from OpenStreetMap are subject to the Open Database License (ODbL). Review the license and attribution requirements for the specific theme, release, and source data you plan to use, particularly before redistributing a derived database or incorporating it into a commercial product.

How do I access Overture Maps data?
- Choose the theme and geography. Identify whether you need places, buildings, addresses, transportation, or another available theme, then confirm that its coverage fits your area and use case.
- Review the schema and license. Read the theme documentation and source-specific terms before building a workflow. Check how entities are represented and whether GERS identifiers can connect the records you already maintain.
- Select an access route. Overture’s 2026 retrospective lists its website and AWS, BigQuery, Snowflake, and Databricks as access options. AWS’s public registry provides the data in GeoParquet for cloud-oriented workflows.
- Test a representative slice. Load a small area or sample into your GIS or data platform. Check coordinate handling, attribute meaning, coverage, freshness, and how much conflation or local validation your application requires before scaling up.
What can you do with Overture Maps data?
Organizations can use the shared map themes as a starting point for applications and analysis that need geographic context, then link or enrich them with their own information. The potential fit depends on the task: a navigation or logistics workflow may care most about transport data and address quality, while a GIS or insurance analysis may need building coverage and stable entity references.
Before adopting it, compare the data with the alternatives for your specific geography and theme. No single map source is established as the universal winner by the published material. Evaluate:
- Coverage and confidence: Are the places, addresses, buildings, or road features complete enough in the locations that matter?
- Freshness: Does the stated monthly release cadence and available update history meet your operational needs?
- Schema and entity resolution: Can your systems use the documented schemas and GERS identifiers, or will you need substantial matching and cleanup?
- License obligations: Which terms apply to the exact data sources and derived database you will distribute or use?
- Integration: How well does the delivery format fit your existing GIS, warehouse, cloud platform, and processing pipeline?
- Specialized needs: Do you need proprietary attributes, local verification, or a specialized layer that the shared dataset does not provide?
Overture executive director Will Mortenson said in The Linux Foundation’s July 13, 2026 announcement: “AI can’t reason about the physical world without an open, verifiable foundation beneath it.” That is the foundation’s rationale; whether its data is suitable for a particular service still depends on coverage, licensing, and validation for that service.
