DXVK 2.7 can improve performance or compatibility in particular Linux gaming setups, but it does not make every game faster. Its most notable changes target CPU overhead and VRAM pressure; results depend on the game, graphics card, driver, and whether the workload is CPU- or GPU-bound. DXVK 2.7 was released on July 5, 2025, so Steam users should first check the DXVK version included with their Proton build rather than assume they need a manual upgrade.
What is DXVK, and how does Proton use it?
DXVK translates Microsoft Direct3D 8, 9, 10, and 11 graphics calls into Vulkan calls. It is one component that can help Windows games run on Linux.
Proton is Valve’s Steam compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux, built using Wine. For most Steam users, DXVK is part of that compatibility stack rather than a separate application to install. Valve advises most users to use the Proton version supplied by Steam. Valve’s Proton repository and guidance explain the project and its intended use.
Does DXVK 2.7 improve FPS on Linux?
It can help in specific situations, but there is no cited aggregate benchmark establishing an overall FPS increase across Linux games. The DXVK project’s 2.7 release notes describe targeted changes, not a universal performance guarantee.

Descriptor management may reduce CPU overhead
DXVK rewrote and modernized descriptor management. On newer AMD and Nvidia graphics cards, it uses VK_EXT_descriptor_buffer by default. The project says this can significantly reduce CPU overhead, potentially benefiting CPU-bound performance in games such as Final Fantasy XIV, God of War, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Watch Dogs 2.
The feature is disabled on some older GPU and driver combinations because it caused severe performance regressions there. The release notes also anticipate a small performance hit in some GPU-bound cases. Whether it helps therefore depends on the hardware and bottleneck, not just on the game running under Linux.
Memory management may help when VRAM is constrained
For discrete GPUs, DXVK now tries to track the driver-reported VRAM budget and move unused resources to system memory under pressure. The project’s goal is improved performance in many Unity games on VRAM-constrained systems, and potentially the ability to use higher texture settings in some games. Memory defragmentation is enabled by default on Intel Battlemage and Lunar Lake GPUs.

This is not a way to eliminate the limits of a graphics card’s memory. The release notes warn that slowdowns and stutters can still occur when VRAM capacity is exceeded. They also say the feature did not work as intended on AMD GPUs because of kernel driver issues.

The release notes identify potential CPU-bound gains in Final Fantasy XIV, God of War, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Watch Dogs 2, and describe memory-management improvements aimed at many Unity titles. Those are qualified, workload-specific claims—not a promise that every listed game will run faster on every system.
DXVK 2.7 also includes specific compatibility fixes or workarounds for Astebreed, GTR, LEGO City Undercover, Star Trek: Starfleet Command III, Test Drive Unlimited 2, and Wargame: European Escalation. A fix for a particular title addresses that title’s issue; it should not be read as a general compatibility improvement for unrelated games.

What else changed in DXVK 2.7?
- DXVK removed its old state cache.
- The
d3d9.forceSwapchainMSAAoption was removed. - D3D11 shader variables and groupshared memory are zero-initialized by default to work around game bugs.
- The project recommends enabling Resizeable BAR on systems that support it: “Enabling Resizeable BAR on supported systems is strongly recommended.” This is the DXVK project’s recommendation, not a requirement to buy new hardware.
Does DXVK 2.7 work with my AMD or Nvidia graphics card?
DXVK 2.7 added a Vulkan requirement: it now requires VK_KHR_maintenance5. The project says it had relied on guarantees from that extension since DXVK 2.5 and removed compatibility fallbacks for older drivers. Its release notes specifically say Linux users with older AMD Polaris and Vega GPUs can continue to use RADV with Mesa 25.0 or newer.
Do not use the current driver table as a DXVK 2.7 compatibility list. The project’s driver-support page, edited June 28, 2026, applies to DXVK 3.x. It says that 3.x needs a compatible Vulkan 1.4 driver and Wine 10.1 or newer for winevulkan support. Its listed Linux minimum driver versions are:

These are the page’s DXVK 3.x requirements, not a claim about DXVK 2.7. The same page lists VK_KHR_maintenance5 and VK_KHR_maintenance6 among required Vulkan extensions and cautions that NVK performance remains behind the proprietary Nvidia driver in many cases.

Do I need to update DXVK manually in Steam?
Usually, no. Start by checking which Proton version the game uses and whether your system’s GPU driver is current and compatible. Steam-provided Proton includes and updates DXVK as part of its compatibility stack; Valve recommends that most users use its supplied Proton. The DXVK 2.7.1 follow-up report also notes that Valve updates DXVK through Proton.
DXVK 2.7.1 followed in 2025 with a fix for a D3D9 MSAA resolve regression and a performance improvement in some D3D9 games, including Dead Space 2. It also included title-specific changes for DCS World, AquaNox 2, Alone in the Dark, and Team Fortress 2. These follow-up fixes are another reason to check the version bundled with a Proton release before trying to replace DXVK separately.
If one game has a documented issue, testing a different Proton version or following a game-specific workaround may be appropriate. The available information does not establish a universal manual-install procedure, so replacing DXVK globally is not a sensible first troubleshooting step.

What Vulkan driver does DXVK need?
The answer depends on the DXVK version. DXVK 2.7 requires VK_KHR_maintenance5; the project’s separate compatibility note for older Polaris and Vega GPUs specifies RADV with Mesa 25.0 or newer. The more extensive driver minimums above are for DXVK 3.x and should not be applied retroactively to 2.7.
When diagnosing a game, compare the DXVK version, GPU generation and vendor, Vulkan driver and version, and whether the bottleneck is CPU performance, GPU performance, VRAM pressure, or a title-specific compatibility bug. A version number alone cannot predict an FPS change.
