Published by Apress in 2020, it progresses from JSP and Tomcat fundamentals to databases and a complete ecommerce application. It is a qualified recommendation based on the publisher’s description and contents—not a proven universal ranking of teaching quality.
Best fit: Beginning Jakarta EE Web Development
Apress describes this book as example-driven and suitable for people new to Java and programming generally. Its scope is broader than JSP syntax: the publisher lists JSP, JSF, MySQL, Apache Tomcat, JSON, JSTL, and XML parser among the topics, with stated outcomes including configuring MySQL, using JSP and JSF with Eclipse Jakarta EE, integrating JSP and JSF, and building an online ecommerce application. The table of contents supports its appeal as a practical starting point. It begins with “Introducing JSP and Tomcat” (pages 1–53), then covers JSP elements (55–87), application architectures (89–109), databases (111–138), an eshop application (139–160), JSP in action (161–214), and XML and JSP (215–271), followed by JSF chapters. That sequence connects JSP concepts to the parts of a working Java web application rather than treating the technology in isolation. A contents list indicates the book’s intended progression; it does not independently establish the quality of each lesson or guarantee learning outcomes. Apress publisher page

JSP is now called Jakarta Pages by the Jakarta EE project. The project describes it as a template engine that combines text such as HTML and XML with custom tags, expression language, and embedded Java code, then compiles that content into a Jakarta Servlet. Jakarta Pages specification

Its publisher page confirms the publication date and coverage, but does not certify compatibility with every later release.
How it compares with an older JSP reference
Web Development with JavaServer Pages, Second Edition from Manning is a historical reference rather than the stronger default for someone starting with contemporary Jakarta EE materials. Manning lists coverage of JSP 1.2 and Servlet 2.3, along with custom tags, components, databases, filters, and non-HTML content. Manning, Web Development with JavaServer Pages, Second Edition The first-edition publisher record dates to May 2000 and lists 800 pages. Manning, Web Development with JavaServer Pages

That older coverage may suit a developer maintaining a system built on a matching legacy stack. For a new learner, the mismatch between JSP 1.2-era material and current Jakarta Pages versions makes it a less suitable default. The right choice for legacy work depends on the application’s deployed server and APIs, not simply on which book is newer.

What “best” means here
No evidence establishes an objective winner for JSP teaching or compares learner outcomes across these books. The recommendation is a best fit for a newcomer who wants examples and a broader Java web application project, based on the publisher’s description, publication date, and listed contents. If your goal is to learn only the syntax, or your work targets a particular older server, choose according to that narrower need and verify that the book’s versions match.
