Cursor and VS Code both offer AI autocomplete, code chat, and agents that can work across files. Use inline suggestions for quick completions, chat for questions or small edits, and an agent when a task calls for repository exploration, changes across files, or running checks. The right choice depends on the workflow and context you need—not on assuming one editor is universally better.

Cursor and VS Code AI features at a glance

Workflow Cursor VS Code Useful for
Suggestions while typing Cursor Tab uses recent edits, surrounding code, and linter errors to suggest code. It can offer multiple lines, imports, and coordinated edits across files. Cursor Tab documentation. GitHub Copilot provides ghost-text inline suggestions and next-edit suggestions. Its documentation says current and open files inform suggestion context. VS Code inline suggestions documentation. Completing a line or block, drafting familiar patterns, or following a likely next edit.
Questions and focused edits Cursor’s Ask workflow is for read-only codebase exploration; Cursor also offers agent-assisted edits. Cursor chat documentation. VS Code directs users to chat for codebase questions and inline chat or suggestions for focused edits. VS Code Copilot overview. Understanding code, discussing an approach, or changing a small, clearly identified section.
Multi-file work Cursor Agent can search files and folders, edit files, run shell commands, and use browser tools. It is intended for complex tasks, including work in larger projects. Cursor Agent documentation. VS Code agents can find relevant code, make changes, and run checks. The workflow stays in the editor alongside the terminal, tests, and debugger; VS Code documents multiple agent harnesses. VS Code agents documentation. Features, bug fixes, and refactors that need investigation and changes across files.
Codebase context Cursor Agent has codebase-search and file-reading tools. Cursor Agent documentation. Copilot agents search workspace files and may use semantic indexing. Setup differs for GitHub repositories, Azure DevOps repositories, and other workspaces. Local workspace indexing is described as enabled for personal accounts and off by default for organizations and enterprises. VS Code workspace-context documentation. Questions and changes that depend on relationships across a repository; check what context is indexed and available.

Which workflow should you use?

Inline suggestions for fast, local drafting

Use Cursor Tab or Copilot ghost text when you are already writing code and want a possible completion without handing off a broader task. Cursor documents multi-line and cross-file predictions; VS Code documents ghost text and next-edit suggestions. In either editor, treat generated code as a draft: inspect it before accepting or relying on it.

Chat or Ask for questions and bounded changes

Use a read-oriented chat workflow to locate and explain relevant code before you edit it. Cursor describes Ask as read-only exploration, while VS Code recommends chat for understanding a codebase. For a small change with a clear target, use a focused edit such as VS Code inline chat rather than delegating an entire task to an agent.

An agent for exploratory, multi-file tasks

Choose an agent when the task requires searching the project, changing multiple files, or running commands and checks. For example, a bug fix that spans a UI component, a shared helper, and tests may require repository exploration before the edit is obvious. Give the agent a specific goal, review its proposed changes, and verify the result with the relevant tests or checks. Agents can take actions; their output is not proof that the implementation is correct.

What to check about repository context

Do not assume that two tools build codebase context in the same way. Cursor documents codebase-search and file-reading tools. VS Code documents Copilot workspace search and semantic indexing, with setup paths that vary by repository type and account configuration. In managed VS Code workspaces, local indexing is described as off by default for organizations and enterprises, so confirm the indexing status and any applicable exclusions before relying on an answer about the whole repository.

Access, plans, and cost

VS Code’s inline-suggestion documentation lists a GitHub Copilot subscription as a prerequisite and mentions a Copilot Free monthly allowance for suggestions and AI credits. Available models can vary and may be subject to organization policy. Check the current VS Code inline-suggestions requirements and the access rules for your account.

How to make a practical choice

  • For autocomplete while coding, compare how Cursor Tab and Copilot suggestions behave on your own work, then review any accepted code.
  • For understanding an unfamiliar project, start with chat or Ask and check what files and workspace context the assistant can use.
  • For focused edits, keep the request bounded and use an inline or chat-based edit when it is sufficient.
  • For cross-file changes, use an agent when exploration and checks are useful, but inspect the diff and run relevant verification yourself.
  • Before choosing based on cost or model access, check current plan terms and account or organization restrictions.

These are different workflows rather than interchangeable feature labels. The official documentation describes capabilities, not comparative productivity or code-quality results, so it does not establish that either product makes developers faster or produces better code in general.
