Smalland: Survive the Wilds is the closest alternative on Nintendo Switch 2 in the current listings: it combines open-world exploration, scavenging, crafting, building, survival hazards, creature taming, and online co-op for up to 10 players. Its tiny-scale wilderness is a clear departure from Valheim’s Viking world. Nintendo lists Valheim itself as released for Switch 2 on September 9, 2026, so it is now an option too.

Why Smalland is the closest alternative
Valheim’s appeal comes from combining several activities into a continuing loop: explore distinct areas, collect resources, craft equipment, build shelter, prepare for dangers, and take on increasingly difficult challenges. Smalland overlaps with many of those activities, including open-world exploration, scavenging, settlement building, survival hazards, and creature taming. Nintendo lists online play for up to 10 players for both Smalland and Valheim.
The setting changes the feel of the adventure. Smalland makes the wilderness feel enormous by placing the player at tiny scale among insects and other creatures. Choose it for a broad mix of exploration, crafting, construction, and online play—not because it reproduces Valheim’s Viking biomes or progression exactly. Nintendo’s Smalland listing gives its Switch 2 release date as May 14, 2026.
What about Valheim itself on Switch 2?
Valheim is no longer merely a comparison point: Nintendo lists its Switch 2 release date as September 9, 2026. Its listing describes procedural biomes, resource gathering, sailing, boss progression, equipment crafting, base construction, cooking, survival systems, and online play for one to 10 players. Choose by the part of Valheim you want to keep
For co-op and building
Start with Smalland. Its Switch 2 listing establishes online play for up to 10 players and describes the closest blend of open-world exploration, crafting, survival, and construction among these alternatives. The other games here are either single-player on Switch or differ more substantially in their central loop.
For exploration and environmental survival
Subnautica is a strong choice if gathering resources and managing oxygen while exploring matter more than multiplayer. Its alien-ocean setting makes survival feel different from Valheim’s land-based adventures, and Nintendo Life describes the Switch version as single-player.

For a harsher survival challenge
Choose The Long Dark for cold-weather wilderness survival or Green Hell for a demanding jungle setting. Both shift attention away from co-op construction: Nintendo Life reports no multiplayer for their Switch editions. Don’t Starve is another option if you want crafting and survival pressure with a more eerie, punishing tone.
For a smaller, directed journey
Windbound centers on exploration, gathering, and improving a boat over a five-chapter adventure. It can scratch the exploration-and-making itch, but it is not an open-ended shared base-building replacement; Nintendo Life reports no multiplayer for its Switch version.

For a flexible building sandbox
Minecraft makes sense if construction and resource gathering are your priorities. It offers a broad sandbox, but it is less similar to Valheim’s Norse atmosphere, boss-led progression, and survival structure.

Native Switch 2 listings are available for Smalland and Valheim. The other games above are identified in the cited guide as Switch editions, not native Switch 2 releases. Nintendo Life’s guide also covers The Flame in the Flood, This War of Mine, and Sheltered. They are more distant matches: The Long Dark focuses on winter wilderness survival, This War of Mine on civilian survival under siege, and Sheltered on resource-management simulation. Consider them if those specific themes appeal, but they are not as close to Valheim’s open-world crafting and co-op loop.
