Choose the right transfer method

Choose based on whether the old phone is available, whether Wi-Fi and iCloud storage suit you, whether you want a local copy, how long the old phone can be unavailable, and whether Health or Activity data needs an encrypted computer backup. Apple does not give a universal transfer-time estimate. A new iPhone enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business cannot use Quick Start to transfer from the current device under Apple’s cited guidance. Apple Quick Start guidance
Make a current backup first
Back up to iCloud
- On the current iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap your account name, then iCloud and iCloud Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now and wait for it to finish.
- Check the latest backup date before relying on it.
Automatic iCloud backups occur daily when the iPhone is connected to power, locked, and on Wi-Fi. A device backup is not a duplicate of everything already syncing to iCloud: for example, iCloud Photos and Messages in iCloud sync separately rather than being included in the daily device backup. If you bought a new iPhone, you might be eligible for temporary iCloud storage. Apple describes this as a conditional option; eligibility and duration are not universal. Apple’s transfer guidance

Back up to a Mac or PC
- Connect the current iPhone to the computer with a compatible cable.
- Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, depending on your computer and operating system, and select the iPhone.
- Choose the computer backup option and start the backup. The computer needs enough available storage.
- If needed, select Encrypt local backup before starting; keep the password somewhere safe.
Computer backups are not encrypted by default. Apple says an unencrypted computer backup will not transfer Health and Activity data. Encryption also includes additional data such as saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, website history, Health data, and call history. You need the encryption password to restore that backup. Keeping both an iCloud backup and a computer backup is an optional precaution; Apple describes these as alternative backup routes. Apple backup guidance

Transfer or restore to the new iPhone
Use Quick Start
- Turn on the new iPhone and place it near the current one.
- Make sure the current iPhone is unlocked, connected to Wi-Fi, and has Bluetooth turned on.
- Follow the setup prompts and authenticate when asked.
- Choose direct transfer or an iCloud download when offered. For direct transfer, keep both iPhones near each other and plugged into power until it finishes.
With an iCloud download, apps and data may continue downloading after setup. Apple says transfer times vary with network conditions and the amount of data. Update both devices where practical and choose a time when the old phone can remain unavailable. Apple Quick Start guidance
Restore from iCloud
- Start setting up the new iPhone and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup and sign in to your Apple Account.
- Choose the backup by checking its date and size. If setup prompts you to update the operating system before restoring, follow the onscreen instructions.
- Stay connected to Wi-Fi while the restore runs; apps, photos, and other content may continue downloading after setup.
Disconnecting from Wi-Fi can pause the restore. Apple’s iCloud restore guidance

Restore from a computer
- During new-iPhone setup, choose the option to restore from a Mac or PC.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer that contains the backup and open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes as applicable.
- Select Restore Backup, then compare the available backups by date and size.
- Enter the encryption password if requested, and keep the iPhone connected while it restores and syncs.
If the new iPhone has already been set up, Apple says you must erase it before restoring through these setup steps. Erasing removes the data currently on the new device, so check and save anything important there before proceeding. Apple restore guidance and computer transfer guidance

Have your Apple Account password ready. Apple’s transfer guidance also recommends addressing SIM or eSIM and carrier transfer as part of preparation. Setup may prompt you to activate mobile service, but the exact steps and support depend on your carrier, device, and plan; ask the carrier about model- or plan-specific eSIM activation. - Open the apps and data you rely on, and confirm that their content is present and current.
- Check that Health data is available if it matters to you; for a computer restore, the source backup must have been encrypted for Health and Activity data to transfer.
- Confirm you can make calls and use cellular data, and finish any carrier activation prompts.
- Keep the old iPhone until these checks are complete and you have handled any remaining app sign-ins.
A compatible cable is needed for the computer backup or restore route, but not for Quick Start or iCloud. Check that its connectors match both the iPhone and computer; Apple’s cited guidance does not endorse a specific cable or universal connector. Apple wired transfer guidance
