For night driving and roadworks, compare a dash cam’s low-light sensor performance and HDR behavior before judging it by resolution alone. Then check whether its viewing angle and camera coverage capture the road scene you need, and confirm its storage and power requirements. If possible, inspect sample footage recorded in lighting and traffic conditions like yours: labels and specifications cannot guarantee that every detail, such as a moving number plate, will be readable.
What matters most for night driving?
Headlights, reflective signs, streetlights and dark roadside areas can all appear in the same frame. A useful night-driving dash cam needs to handle both dim conditions and strong contrast—not simply produce a high-resolution image.
Compare sensitivity, HDR and sample footage
Sony Semiconductor Solutions Group identifies HDR, high sensitivity and high resolution as three key dash-cam imaging attributes. HDR is intended to preserve information in bright and dark parts of a scene, while sensor sensitivity affects performance in dim light. Sony’s dash-cam technical guidance explains these factors, but a specification cannot tell you exactly how a particular camera will handle your route. Look for real night footage, ideally including headlights, reflective road signs and unlit areas.
Do not treat every HDR label as equivalent
HDR methods can involve different trade-offs. Sony explains that DOL HDR combines successive bright and dark exposures; the slight time gap can create contour blur or color artifacts on fast-moving targets. Sony describes its Clear HDR approach as capturing bright and dark information in one shot to reduce those motion artifacts. These are explanations of Sony sensor functions, not a guarantee about every dash cam’s implementation. Check the camera’s own specifications and moving-scene samples rather than assuming that the word “HDR” guarantees clear footage.

Use resolution as one factor, not a night-performance score
More pixels can preserve more image information, but resolution alone does not determine how much useful detail a night recording contains. Sensitivity, pixel size, lens, movement and image processing also matter. Sony notes that larger pixels can receive more light, but implementations vary between products. Compare sensor information and actual footage as well as the advertised resolution; no resolution figure guarantees that a plate will be legible in every situation.
How should a dash cam cover roadworks?
For lane shifts, cones, queues and changing traffic patterns, a forward-facing camera records the road ahead. The useful question is whether its view captures enough of the surrounding scene to show what was happening—not whether the camera has the widest possible lens.

- 💖💖【Important Note】Due to soaring memory chip costs, many brands have eliminated memory cards entirely, requiring a separate purchase. However, to save you the hassle of buying extra accessories, we are resisting cost pressures without raising our dashcam's price. Starting June 26, 2026, this camera will include a 32GB memory card (previously 64GB) so you can still use it out of the box. For extended storage, we highly recommend purchasing a Class 10, U3, and V30 (or higher) memory card.

Balance viewing angle against edge distortion
A wider field of view can include more of a junction or adjacent lanes, but very wide views may distort objects near the edges. Check sample footage to see how much of the road is visible and whether important details at the sides remain clear. Halfords’ dash-cam buyer’s guide discusses viewing angle and camera coverage.
Decide whether rear coverage fits your needs
A rear camera adds footage behind the vehicle, which may provide context about following traffic or a rear impact. Whether that extra view is worthwhile depends on what you want recorded; the available guidance does not establish a universally best number of camera channels for roadworks. VIOFO UK’s dash-cam buying guide identifies roadworks as one situation a front camera can capture.

What should you check about storage and power?
Confirm the microSD requirements
Many dash cams record to a microSD card and use loop recording to overwrite older footage when the card fills. Card inclusion varies: some cameras come with one, while others require a separate purchase. Check the exact model’s supported card type and capacity, and follow its instructions for card maintenance. Halfords’ guide covers microSD storage, loop recording and the variation in whether a card is included; it is retailer guidance, so use the camera maker’s specifications to confirm compatibility.
Treat parking mode as a separate setup decision
For recording while driving, a 12V outlet or the camera’s supplied power connection may be sufficient, depending on the model. Parking mode is different: the camera may need power after the engine is off. A compatible hardwire setup can supply it, and voltage cutoff helps protect the vehicle battery. Before buying a hardwire kit, verify that it is compatible with both the camera and vehicle, and check its cutoff behavior and installation requirements.

A practical comparison checklist
- Night image: Look for low-light sensor information, details of HDR behavior and sample footage in difficult lighting.
- Detail: Compare resolution alongside sensor, lens and image-processing information; do not assume more pixels guarantee better night footage.
- Roadworks view: Check whether the forward view covers the road and adjacent context you need, and inspect image edges for distortion.
- Additional coverage: Consider a rear camera if recording what happens behind the vehicle is important to you.
- Recording media: Verify supported microSD specifications, whether a card is included and how loop recording works.
- Parking use: If you need recording with the engine off, confirm camera and vehicle compatibility, power method and voltage protection before choosing a hardwire setup.
