China is planning a kinetic-impact demonstration: one spacecraft would study an asteroid, a second would strike it, and instruments would track the effects. The mission is not a completed test, its target and schedule have shifted, and the reported orbital change is a projection—not a measured result.
How the planned test would work
The mission concept pairs an observer spacecraft with an impactor. The observer would characterize the asteroid before the impact; the impactor would hit it at high speed. Spacecraft and ground- and space-based instruments would then record the event and its effects. China Daily described this two-spacecraft plan in a September 2025 report republished by the National Center for Science and Technology Innovation (China Daily report republished by NCSTI).
A later account of the proposal describes a longer observation sequence: the observer would conduct close and orbiting observations for three to six months before impact, followed by six to twelve months of observations afterward. The account says a Long March 3B launch is expected (The Planetary Society). Thus, “fly-by” is an incomplete shorthand for descriptions that include close and orbiting observations and extended monitoring.
Which asteroid is the proposed target?
The target has not been consistently described in public planning accounts. A December 2023 National Academies presentation showed an earlier concept aimed at 2019 VL5, an asteroid about 30 meters across. It listed a 6.4 km/s impact speed and a net launch estimate of 2027 (National Academies presentation).

A later proposal account instead names 2015 XF261, also reported to be roughly 30 meters in diameter. It says final target selection depends on the launch window, so 2015 XF261 should be treated as a candidate under consideration, not a confirmed final target (The Planetary Society). The 6.4 km/s figure belongs to the earlier 2019 VL5 concept; it should not be taken as a confirmed speed for the later proposal.
What change is expected—and what does it mean?
China Daily’s September 2025 report says the planned impact would occur about 10 million kilometers from Earth and is expected to change the asteroid’s orbit by 3–5 centimeters (China Daily report republished by NCSTI). Those numbers are reported expectations for the proposed test. The orbital change has not been reported as a measured outcome, and the projection does not establish that the mission has already demonstrated a response to a real threat.

When could the mission launch?
Public schedule descriptions are planning estimates, not a confirmed launch date. Wu Weiren was reportedly associated with a launch around 2027; the later proposal account expects a launch before 2030. The National Academies’ December 2023 slide also listed “NET 2027,” but for the earlier 2019 VL5 concept (The Planetary Society; The Planetary Society; National Academies presentation). Because both the target and dates have varied across descriptions, neither estimate should be read as a final schedule.
How this differs from NASA’s DART mission
NASA’s DART spacecraft struck an asteroid in 2022 and altered its orbit, completing a kinetic-impact demonstration (NASA planetary defense strategy). China’s described mission remains a plan. Its proposed sequence emphasizes pre-impact close observations and months of follow-up, but the projected effect is not a result comparable to DART’s measured outcome.

China’s other asteroid and planetary-defense plans
Tianwen-2 is a separate mission
Tianwen-2 is not the proposed impact test. CNSA’s 2019 announcement described a sample-return mission to near-Earth asteroid 2016 HO3, followed by exploration of comet 133P; a 2025 report says Tianwen-2 launched on May 29, 2025 (CNSA announcement). Its sample-return and comet objectives are distinct from deliberately changing an asteroid’s orbit.
A broader monitoring and response network is also planned
A July 2026 report says CNSA announced plans for an integrated space-ground network for monitoring and alerts, risk assessment, early warning, and a library of possible mission responses. The same report says public details remain limited, so this should be described as a plan rather than an established operational capability (July 2026 report).
