It connects to the system where your data already lives, then provides tools to query, chart, and combine that data into dashboards; it does not store the analyzed data itself.
How Apache Superset works
Superset sits between users and a connected database or data store. You configure a supported connection and credentials, expose tables or views as datasets, and use Superset to query and present the results. Your connected data store remains the source of truth.
The project’s overview describes a platform that combines a no-code visualization builder, a SQL editor, dashboards, caching, datasets, and a lightweight semantic layer. It advertises “40+ pre-installed visualization types”; the overview does not state when that figure was published.
What you can do with Superset
Build charts visually with Explore
Explore lets users select a dataset, choose a visualization, and configure fields and metrics through a graphical interface. It is suited to chart building without writing a complete SQL query for every visualization.

Write and run SQL in SQL Lab
SQL Lab is the web-based SQL workspace for users who prefer to query data directly. The results can support investigation and chart creation, subject to the permissions and capabilities of the connected database.
Bring charts together in dashboards
Saved visualizations can be arranged into dashboards. Superset’s overview describes interactive features including dashboard filters and cross-filtering, which help users explore related views without treating each chart as an isolated report.

Define reusable calculations
Superset’s lightweight semantic layer includes virtual metrics—SQL aggregations such as a sum or count—and virtual calculated columns, which are SQL expressions applied to dataset fields. The first-dashboard tutorial also describes surfacing external semantic views, including dbt Semantic Layer or Cube, when the SEMANTIC_LAYERS feature flag is enabled. That tutorial labels this external-layer support experimental; check the documentation for your installed version before depending on it.
Does Superset store your data?
No. Superset does not provide a storage layer for the user data it analyzes. The data stays in the connected database or SQL-speaking store. Superset does have its own application configuration and metadata needs, but those are distinct from storing the underlying analytical data. The official tutorial makes this distinction explicitly.

This architecture means data retention, backups, and the authoritative access rules for the analyzed data remain matters for the underlying data system and its administrators. Superset can add application-level controls, but it is not a replacement for securing the database.
Database compatibility and prerequisites
Superset requires a supported connection to a SQL-speaking engine. The version 6.1.0 introduction describes compatibility in terms of an engine with a Python DB-API driver and a SQLAlchemy dialect. That does not mean every database or every driver combination will work automatically: verify the current support guidance for your specific engine, driver, and Superset version.

At a high level, getting started means connecting a database, exposing a table or view as a dataset, creating a chart in Explore or querying with SQL Lab, and saving visualizations into a dashboard. The exact setup depends on the database driver, credentials, deployment, and access configuration.

Superset has application roles and permissions, but database-side access management remains essential. The project recommends a dedicated database user with limited privileges; administrators and security teams must enforce what that user can access in the database itself. A safeguard such as DISALLOWED_SQL_FUNCTIONS is not a guarantee against every threat to the connected database.
Security configuration changes across versions and deployments. The production guide says its recommendations apply to Superset 4.0 and later and are evolving. For example, it notes that Talisman is disabled by default in Superset 4.0 and later. Check the administrator documentation for the version you run, and review your own reverse-proxy and TLS configuration rather than assuming a default provides the protection you need.
When Superset may be a good fit
Superset may suit a team that wants browser-based dashboards and data exploration over an existing SQL data platform, with both visual chart-building and direct SQL workflows. It is not automatically the right choice for every organization; the decision depends on your data platform, security model, and operational preferences.
- Check database support: Confirm that your specific engine, driver, and SQLAlchemy dialect are supported for your intended Superset version.
- Match workflows to users: Decide whether users need visual chart exploration, SQL authoring, dashboards, or a mix.
- Plan permissions across both layers: Work out how Superset roles and dataset or dashboard access will align with database permissions.
- Assess semantic-layer needs: Determine whether Superset’s virtual metrics and calculated columns are enough, or whether you depend on an external semantic layer and its current feature status.
- Choose an operating model: Decide whether your team will operate the application or use a managed service; hosting arrangements and terms vary and should be checked directly.
The version 6.1.0 introduction presents Superset as a platform that can augment or replace proprietary BI tools for some teams, not as a universal upgrade. Its practical value depends on how well its supported connections, exploration tools, dashboard features, and security controls fit your environment.
