A game-worn jersey was worn by a player during a game. A game-issued jersey was issued, prepared, or made available for possible use—but the label alone does not show that a player wore it. To tell what a particular jersey is, check the exact wording and item-specific record from the league, team, or other stated authenticator.
What the labels mean
Game-worn or game-used
These terms make a claim about actual use: the jersey was worn by a player during a game. A 2011 U.S. Department of Justice document uses “game-used” and “game-worn” for jerseys worn during a game; that is useful historical terminology, not a universal rule governing every league or seller today. Game-issued, team-issued, or locker-room-issued
These labels generally describe issuance or preparation for possible use. They do not, by themselves, establish that the jersey entered a game. MLB defines its “Team Issued” designation as an independent third-party authenticator attesting that an item was issued by a club to its clubhouse, and says the designation is not intended to determine whether it was used. Do not assume every seller uses “game-issued” with the same definition or verification process. Look for the issuer’s definition and the record for the specific jersey.

Licensed retail jersey
A licensed fan jersey can be genuine merchandise without having been issued to a player or worn in a game. MLB specifically distinguishes authentication holograms from holograms used on licensed products: the latter do not authenticate an item as game-used. MLB Authentication FAQ.
What an authentication mark does—and does not—prove
Authentication has a defined scope. MLB says an item may be eligible for its authentication program only when an authenticator witnesses it being signed or used. A hologram linked to a database record can provide details about the item, but the record’s wording controls what is established: an MLB “Team Issued” result supports issuance to a clubhouse, not game use. Other leagues and clubs may use different systems. For example, the Blues say covered memorabilia categories come with a Certificate of Authenticity and that game-used items collected during the 2026–27 season will receive a serial-numbered hologram. How to verify a jersey before buying
- Pin down the claim. Note the sport, league, club, seller, and exact label: game-worn, game-used, game-issued, team-issued, or licensed retail.
- Identify who authenticated it. Find the mark or certificate and use the issuing league or team’s verification system. - Read the record’s wording literally. An MLB “Team Issued” designation confirms issuance to the clubhouse, not game use. A licensed-product hologram does not establish game use. MLB Authentication FAQ.
- Ask for item-specific evidence. Check whether documentation identifies this jersey and connects it to a named player, season, game, or event. A general certificate may establish less than a record tied to the particular item.
- Compare the full evidence, not appearance alone. Consider the stated use status, player or event specificity, provenance and chain of custody, authentication issuer and scope, and condition. Visible wear may be consistent with use, but the cited sources do not establish that wear by itself proves a jersey was worn in a game.

There is no universal price formula in the cited sources. Do not infer a fixed premium from “game-worn” or “game-issued” alone; assess the documentation, specificity, provenance, and condition of the actual listing.

Where to find documented jerseys
Start with the relevant league or team’s official memorabilia channel, then verify each item’s record and current sale details. The NBA announced Sotheby’s as its official source for game-worn items; MLB says authenticated memorabilia is offered through MLB.com and retail partners, while clubs also operate team-authentics channels. A display case can protect and present a jersey, but it does not authenticate it.
