WordPress has no universal “Slider” menu. The steps below cover the WordPress.com Slideshow block and Smart Slider 3; other slider tools may use different controls.
Find out which kind of slider you have
Open the page or post that displays the slider and select it in the editor. WordPress blocks can be selected and edited individually; if the slideshow is a block, its settings appear in the block editor. If it is a third-party slider, look for the plugin or theme feature that created it instead. For example, Smart Slider 3 has its own WordPress admin menu and editor. WordPress explains how to work with blocks in the editor.
There is no single editing route for every WordPress installation: the right location depends on how the slider was created.
Edit a WordPress.com Slideshow block
- In WordPress.com, open the page or post containing the slideshow and choose Edit.
- Select the Slideshow block in the content area.
- Use its block settings to adjust available options, including autoplay, transition, width, image resolution, and the delay between transitions. The exact controls apply to the WordPress.com Slideshow block, not every carousel or slider plugin. See WordPress.com’s Slideshow block guide.
- Preview the page, then update or publish it when the result looks right.
Edit a Smart Slider 3 slider
Change slide content
In the WordPress admin, open Smart Slider and choose the slider you want to change. Open a slide to edit its image and any heading, text, button, or video layers. Smart Slider 3 also offers a Gutenberg block and shortcode publishing; its WordPress.org listing describes these options.

Reorder slides
In the slider editor, drag slides into the order you want. The slide-order documentation explains this control.
Adjust how the image fits
In the slide settings, choose an image fill mode based on whether you prioritize filling the frame or showing the whole image. The modes have different trade-offs, as described in Smart Slider’s Slides settings guide.

- Fill: covers the slide, which may crop the image.
- Fit: shows the full image, but may leave empty space if its aspect ratio differs from the slider’s.
- Blur Fit: shows the image and fills extra space with an enlarged, blurred background.
- Stretch: fills the slide but may distort the image.
- Center: centers the image at its original size and is not responsive.
Preview the chosen mode at more than one width. A setting cannot always show the entire image while also filling the frame without cropping, blank space, blur, or distortion.
Make sure the slider is embedded on the page
If changes do not appear where expected, check that the page contains the correct Smart Slider block or shortcode for that slider. Smart Slider’s plugin listing describes the Gutenberg block and shortcode publishing options.

Check layers and mobile layout
After changing text, images, layer positions, or slide dimensions, preview the slider on desktop and mobile widths. Smart Slider 3 distinguishes default-positioned layers, which flow like blocks and can increase slide height, from absolute-positioned layers, which can overlap content without affecting slide height and may be cropped if the slider is too short. Its layer-positioning guide advises checking spacing and text size on mobile.
- If text overlaps another layer, inspect its position and spacing.
- If a layer is cut off, check whether it is absolutely positioned and whether the slide has enough height.
- If the slider becomes unusually tall, check whether default-positioned layers are adding height.
If the editing controls do not match
If you cannot find the Slideshow block controls or Smart Slider menu described here, the slider may have been added by another plugin or your theme. Identify its name in the WordPress admin or page editor, then use that product’s documentation; controls from one slider tool do not necessarily apply to another.
