If you have respiratory-virus symptoms, stay home and away from others until your symptoms are improving overall and you have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine. If you feel too unwell to work, take a sick day. If you feel able to work but could still expose others, ask whether you can work remotely and check your workplace policy. After you resume normal activities, take extra precautions for five days.
Should you go to work if you’re sick?
For respiratory-virus symptoms that are not better explained by another cause, the CDC advises staying home and away from others until both conditions are met: your symptoms are improving overall, and you have had no fever for at least 24 hours without using fever-reducing medication. The CDC’s guidance says to “Stay home and away from others (including people you live with who are not sick) if you have respiratory virus symptoms that aren’t better explained by another cause.” CDC: Preventing Spread of Respiratory Viruses When You’re Sick.
This is general U.S. public-health guidance for respiratory viruses, not a rule for every illness, workplace, or clinical setting. Healthcare settings have separate guidance. If your symptoms are severe or you are unsure what to do, contact a healthcare provider.
How to choose between a sick day, remote work, and working onsite
| Option | When it may fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Take a sick day | You are too unwell to function effectively, need rest, or have not met the CDC’s return threshold for respiratory-virus symptoms. | Check your employer’s leave policy and any applicable local requirements. This practical decision guide is not a legal determination of leave rights. |
| Work remotely | You feel well enough to do your work, your role allows remote work, and you want to avoid exposing people onsite. | Remote work can reduce onsite contact; it is not medical advice to work through illness. Rest instead if you are not well enough to work. |
| Work onsite | You have resumed normal activities under the CDC threshold and your work and employer policy permit it. | You may still spread a virus after feeling better, so use added precautions for the next five days. |
When can you return—and are you still contagious?
Meeting the CDC threshold means you can resume normal activities; it does not mean the risk of spreading infection is gone. For the five days after returning, CDC recommends added precautions. Options include wearing a well-fitting mask, improving ventilation, keeping distance from others, practicing good hygiene, and testing when appropriate. Choose precautions that make sense for your setting and the people around you. See the CDC’s precautions for when you’re sick.

What evidence says about remote work during early illness
A CDC-published observational study in Emerging Infectious Diseases examined work attendance among approximately 8,000 people over a four-year period spanning prepandemic and pandemic periods. Among participants with COVID-19, 51.2% reported working onsite on illness day 1, 22.3% on day 2, and 14.1% on day 3. These figures describe that study sample and period; they are not estimates of current population attendance.

In the study, workers with hybrid experience had lower adjusted odds of working onsite on illness day 3 than workers with onsite-only experience: 0.38 (95% confidence interval 0.29–0.49) during the pandemic period and 0.69 (95% confidence interval 0.54–0.87) during prepandemic influenza seasons. The results describe an association in attendance patterns, not proof that working while sick is safe, speeds recovery, or is medically advisable. Leave rights depend on where you work, your employer, the reason for leave, and your eligibility.
