Because “this one” doesn’t identify which Genesis racer you just finished, choose your next game by the kind of driving you want: Out Run for scenic arcade driving and route choices, Road Rash for motorcycles, or either Super Monaco GP game for circuit racing. OutRun 2019 is another option if you want to stay with the Out Run name. These are recommendations by style, not a definitive ranking.
Pick by driving style
| Game | Driving style | What the available documentation supports |
|---|---|---|
| Out Run | Scenic arcade driving | Branching courses, five possible goals, European scenery, and four selectable music choices. |
| Road Rash | Motorcycle racing | SEGA’s licensee catalog identifies it as a Mega Drive racing release. |
| Super Monaco GP | Circuit racing | SEGA’s first-party Mega Drive catalog classifies it as a race title. |
| Ayrton Senna’s Super Monaco GP II | Circuit racing | SEGA’s first-party Mega Drive catalog classifies it as a race title. |
| OutRun 2019 | Another Out Run-branded release | SEGA’s licensee catalog lists it as a Mega Drive racing release; the catalog evidence cited here does not establish its mechanics. |
The official catalogs establish that these games belong to the Mega Drive racing library. They do not provide a basis for ranking handling, difficulty, or multiplayer features across the list.

For scenic driving and route choice: Out Run
SEGA’s Mega Drive profile describes a red sports car driving through European scenery, with branching courses leading to five possible goals. It also notes four selectable music choices, making this the most clearly documented pick here for a scenic drive where route choice is part of the appeal.

That is the date shown for the Mega Drive release; it should not be taken as a statement about every regional edition or the North American Genesis release.
#1 Best Overall
For motorcycle racing: Road Rash
SEGA’s licensee catalog lists Road Rash as a Mega Drive racing release, giving it a clear place on a shortlist for anyone who wants a motorcycle racer rather than another car game. The same catalog evidence does not establish specific controls, modes, or difficulty, so those are best checked in a game-specific manual or other reliable documentation if they matter to your choice.
SEGA’s Genesis Mini manual index includes a manual for Road Rash II. That confirms the title’s presence in the manual index, but by itself does not establish current stock, the full Mini game lineup, or compatibility with a particular cartridge or console.
Rank #2
- Super Monaco GP (スーパーモナコGP) is a Formula One racing simulation video game released by Sega for the Sega Genesis game console.
- Sequel to the 1979 arcade game Monaco GP!
- REVIEWs: Garnered at-the-time unprecedented 10–10–9–9 rating from Electronic Gaming Monthly's Review Crew and a 93% from Mean Machines!
- The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version of Super Monaco GP adds a World Championship mode. In the World Championship mode, the goal is to win a season of races, and then go on to defend the title
- The circuits are modeled on the ones used in the 1989 Formula One season, with background scenery similar to the real-world circuit venues!
For circuit racing: Super Monaco GP and its sequel
Super Monaco GP and Ayrton Senna’s Super Monaco GP II are both classified as race titles in SEGA’s first-party Mega Drive catalog. They are sensible alternatives if you want circuit racing rather than the branching scenic-road premise documented for Out Run.

Rank #3
- Includes the following games:Sonic the Hedgehog Golden Axe Streets of Rage Revenge of Shinobi Columns Super Hang-On
For another Out Run-branded release: OutRun 2019
SEGA’s licensee catalog lists OutRun 2019 as a Mega Drive racing release. Its title makes it a natural follow-up to consider if you want another game carrying the Out Run name, but the catalog evidence cited here does not establish its setting, driving mechanics, or how it compares with Out Run.
What about Virtua Racing?
SEGA’s company history describes Virtua Racing as its first polygon racing game and discusses the arcade release as a full-polygon commercial game machine. That is useful historical context, but it does not establish details of the Genesis port or support placing that port in this particular shortlist. Check documentation specific to the Genesis version before choosing it on the strength of the arcade history.

Check the version before buying
SEGA’s catalogs are Mega Drive sources, primarily Japanese. They establish game identity and racing classification, not whether a particular North American Genesis cartridge is region-compatible with your system or whether a current listing is legitimate.

- Confirm the exact title and regional version on the listing.
- Check your console’s region compatibility before purchasing a cartridge.
