AI can help wildfire teams spot possible fires by scanning satellite images, camera feeds and other sensor data for signs such as unusual heat or smoke. It can map a suspected fire and send an alert for people to assess. The technology supports detection and decision-making; it does not confirm every alert, predict every ignition or fight fires on its own.

How does AI detect wildfires?

A detection system analyzes observations from a particular sensor or network and looks for patterns associated with fire. For example, an algorithm may flag an unusual heat signature in satellite imagery or possible smoke in a camera image. Depending on the system, it can place a suspected detection on a map and send an alert to an agency dashboard or feed. Trained personnel then assess the alert and determine what verification or response is needed.

This is not one universal automated pipeline: sensors, algorithms, alert routing and human review differ by system. After a fire is identified, observations may also help teams track its location, spread and intensity.

NOAA’s experimental satellite system

NOAA’s Next Generation Fire System (NGFS) analyzes imagery from GOES geostationary satellites for heat anomalies, geolocates new heat sources, and makes alerts available to forecasters, dispatchers and first responders. NOAA describes NGFS as an experimental automated capability that was increasingly being integrated into operations in its May 20, 2025 release. NOAA says GOES scans a multi-state area every minute and creates a fresh image of the contiguous United States every five minutes.

NOAA said NGFS can issue an alert as soon as one minute after fire energy reaches the satellite. That is NOAA’s description of this system’s timing, not a guarantee for every fire or detection technology. The clock starts when fire energy reaches the satellite; it does not mean every ignition will be noticed, accurately located and responded to within a minute. Read NOAA’s description of NGFS.

What the systems can—and cannot—tell responders

AI can sift through observations and draw attention to a possible fire, but an alert is a lead to check, not proof. A suspected fire’s precise location may still need to be established by trained personnel and firefighters. False alerts are possible, and a system’s usefulness depends on more than its algorithm: sensor coverage, the timeliness and quality of data, communications, verification and response capacity all matter.

AI detection is also distinct from forecasting. Detection looks for evidence of a fire that may already be burning. Forecasting may estimate fire behavior or spread, or help assess conditions associated with risk. Neither function guarantees that an ignition can be predicted in advance or that an extreme fire’s path can be forecast reliably.

How detection approaches compare

Different sensors cover different gaps, and no single approach is established as the best choice for every setting. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) says the most cost-effective combination is not yet known and that agencies and operators face challenges making data from different systems work together.

Approach What it contributes Limits and trade-offs
Satellite imagery and algorithms Broad-area observation, including remote locations; can identify heat signatures and help monitor a fire’s size, direction, speed or intensity. Geostationary satellites’ altitude limits image resolution; lower-orbit satellites revisit areas intermittently. Clouds and data delays can interfere.
Ground camera networks with AI Repeated views of selected wildland areas; image analysis can flag possible smoke or fire. Coverage depends on where cameras are placed. Remote data transmission and verification can be difficult, and algorithms can produce false alerts. Privacy and data security need consideration near residences.
Environmental sensors Local measurements such as heat, humidity or fine particulates may indicate a fire. Accurate operation may require dense networks; installation and data transmission can be difficult in remote areas.
Aircraft and drones Incident-specific information about location and potential spread; thermal cameras may see through smoke and dense trees. Aircraft cost money to deploy and can expose pilots to smoke and fire. Pilots need training and certification; drones have range and safety constraints. GAO reports that drones may last three to five years or less in harsh conditions.

These approaches can complement one another: satellites provide a wide view, while cameras and local sensors watch selected areas, and aircraft or drones can gather closer information near a suspected incident. Coverage, alert speed, location precision, operating cost, verification workload and data compatibility are useful factors when evaluating a system. GAO’s overview of wildfire detection technologies and its report on wildfire forecasting, detection, mitigation and response discuss the trade-offs.

What current deployments show

AI-assisted wildfire detection is already being used in some settings, but deployment does not mean that accuracy or performance is settled. GAO reported in 2025 that California began using AI to detect wildfires in images from more than 1,100 cameras statewide in 2023. GAO also said detection algorithms are still being refined to improve accuracy and reduce false alerts. The camera count describes California’s reported network, not a universal system size or performance benchmark.

NOAA reported in 2025 that 90% of the National Weather Service’s 122 Weather Forecast Offices had subscribed to the NGFS feed since it became available in February of that year. In describing an Oklahoma fire outbreak, NOAA said state officials attributed the initial detection of 19 fires to GOES satellites. These figures show reported use and attribution in specific contexts; they do not establish a detection rate for all fires.

NOAA also reported that NGFS cost under $3 million to develop. That is a development cost for this system, not a typical purchase price or a full estimate of operating costs. NOAA described a preliminary, event-specific model estimate of more than $850 million in structures and property potentially saved during the Oklahoma outbreak. It was not a general estimate of savings from AI, nor an independently established measure of damage prevented. NOAA program manager Mike Pavolonis characterized the single-outbreak result by saying, “The amount of damage that NGFS helped firefighters prevent during this single outbreak was 250 times greater than the cost of developing this system.”

How AI may help with wildfire modeling

AI and machine learning can support modeling without detecting an active fire directly. GAO says machine-learning applications have often improved model inputs such as vegetation type, vegetation coverage and weather. Potential uses include processing current observations faster, using more satellite imagery, flagging potentially inaccurate data for human review and combining predictions from multiple models in an ensemble.

Using machine learning in wildfire spread models remains an early-stage research area, according to GAO. Rare extreme fires have limited historical records, which can constrain forecasting. Preparing data for AI tools may also be costly and time-consuming, and inaccurate model information can put lives and property at risk. GAO emphasizes trained human interpretation and continued testing in operational settings.

What AI wildfire alerts mean for the public

An AI alert can help professionals notice a possible fire sooner, particularly when a system scans imagery or feeds continuously. It is not itself a public confirmation, evacuation order or guarantee that a fire is nearby. People should follow instructions from local emergency management and fire authorities, who can assess reports alongside other information.

The evidence cited here concerns U.S. systems and agencies; it does not establish comparative performance across countries, landscapes or regulatory settings. For any deployment, the practical question is not simply whether AI can flag a pattern, but whether the whole system can deliver timely, useful information to people able to verify and act on it.
