For modern PC gaming, 8 GB of VRAM can work for many games at 1080p with sensible settings; 12 GB is a useful planning target for demanding 1440p gaming; and 16 GB or more can provide extra room for 4K or high textures. These are guidelines, not guarantees: the right amount depends on the game, resolution, settings, desired frame rate, and the graphics card’s rendering performance.
What VRAM does—and what it does not do
VRAM is the graphics card’s onboard memory. It stores data the GPU needs to render a scene, including textures and shaders. AMD describes Radeon VRAM as memory used for rendering games and applications, holding graphics assets needed to display images (AMD’s VRAM guide).
More VRAM gives a game more room for assets, but it does not make a slow GPU render frames faster. When comparing cards, consider both memory capacity and the GPU’s performance at your target resolution and frame rate.
How much VRAM to plan for at each resolution

These ranges are planning guidance rather than promises. Check the publisher’s current requirements for the games you play, and look at the exact resolution, preset, frame-rate target, and upscaling assumptions attached to each requirement.

Why requirements differ between games
Resolution, texture quality, and frame rate
Higher resolution and more detailed textures can increase the graphics memory a game needs. Requirements also describe a target experience, not just whether a game launches: a minimum profile may aim for low settings and a modest frame rate, while recommended or higher profiles can call for more capable cards and more VRAM.
For example, Borderlands 4’s support page, updated May 29, 2026, lists 8 GB VRAM as the minimum for 1080p at 30 fps on the low preset, and 12 GB or more for its recommended 1440p at 60 fps medium-preset target (Borderlands 4 PC system requirements). Those figures apply to the stated profiles, not every game.

Upscaling and higher presets
Requirements can change across presets and resolutions, and a publisher may specify upscaling as part of its target. Nioh 3’s listed profiles illustrate the range: its minimum uses a 6 GB card for 1080p/30 fps at Very Low with upscaling; its recommended profile lists 8 GB and 12 GB cards for 1080p/60 fps Standard with upscaling; its High profile lists 12–20 GB cards for 1440p/60 fps with upscaling; and Very High lists 12–20 GB cards for 2160p/60 fps with upscaling (Nioh 3 PC requirements).
Games do not all need 12 GB or more
Lower-capacity cards remain listed for some modern games. Larian lists 4 GB or more as the Windows minimum and 8 GB or more as recommended for Baldur’s Gate 3; it notes that meeting minimum specifications may require quality concessions (Baldur’s Gate 3 system requirements). NBA 2K25 lists 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended (NBA 2K25 PC system requirements). These examples are why blanket claims that every modern game needs 12 GB or 16 GB are misleading.

Is 8 GB enough for 1440p?
It can be enough in some games, particularly if you lower demanding settings, but it is a less comfortable planning choice for a new 1440p build than 12 GB. The game-specific Borderlands 4 recommendation of 12 GB or more for 1440p/60 fps medium settings shows why 8 GB should not be treated as a dependable fit for every demanding release at that resolution.
Do not decide by capacity alone. A card with 8 GB might render a particular game acceptably, while a card with more VRAM can still miss your frame-rate target if its GPU is not fast enough.

Is 12 GB enough for 4K?
It can be, depending on the game and settings; 12 GB is not a universal 4K minimum. Square Enix recommends 12 GB of VRAM or above for FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH at 4K. Its listed minimum target is 1080p/30 fps on low, and its listed recommended target is 1080p/60 fps on medium, so the separate 4K note should not be confused with the memory attached to those 1080p profiles (FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH PC requirements).
For 4K gaming with high textures, 16 GB or more can offer additional headroom, but the game’s own requirements and the GPU’s rendering speed still matter.

How to compare graphics cards for your games
- Set your target. Decide whether you want 1080p, 1440p, or 4K, and specify the frame rate you want.
- Check the games’ requirements. Use each publisher’s current requirements and note which resolution, preset, frame rate, and upscaling mode go with each listed card or VRAM figure.
- Match settings to your priorities. Texture quality and ray tracing can affect memory needs. Decide which settings you are willing to reduce if necessary.
- Compare the whole GPU. Consider rendering performance as well as VRAM, then weigh price, power draw, and physical compatibility with your PC. Do not treat a larger memory number as proof of better value or higher frame rates.
AMD’s own card-to-resolution examples pair the 8 GB RX 7600 with a 1080p target, the 12 GB RX 7700 XT with 1440p, the 16 GB RX 7800 XT with 1440p and 4K, and the 24 GB RX 7900 XTX with 4K. This is AMD product guidance, not an independent buying verdict (AMD’s VRAM guide).
What a VRAM usage figure can—and cannot—tell you
One data point is not a universal requirement. AMD’s performance labs reported 11.7 GB peak usage in Far Cry 6 at native 1440p, Ultra settings, with High ray tracing enabled. The May 16, 2023 test used an RX 6750 XT with 12 GB against an RTX 4060 Ti with 8 GB, Adrenalin 23.4.3 and driver 531.79 respectively, a Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32 GB DDR5-5200, and Windows 11 (AMD’s test details). It is a result for that title and test setup, not evidence that all ray-traced games need 12 GB.
