It is a database application builder, not an online database-hosting service. You can use a local database file or connect to supported database servers, but the project’s current release and operating-system support information is not fully consistent, so check package availability before relying on it.
What KEXI is for
KEXI, associated with KDE and the Calligra project, provides a visual environment for creating and using database applications. Its main building blocks are tables, queries, forms, and reports. The idea is to create an interface around stored data rather than work only with raw database tables or SQL.
The KEXI project describes the software as free software and an open-source alternative in the desktop database category. Its feature page says, “KEXI is, and will always be, free software.” KEXI project
What you can build with it
Tables and relationships
The table designer lets you define fields, choose data types, set field properties, assign primary keys, and create relationships. These structures determine what information the database stores and how its records relate.

Queries, in a visual designer or SQL
You can build queries using a visual designer with joins and criteria, or write them directly in the SQL editor. The project also documents parameterized queries. That gives database users a visual starting point while preserving a direct SQL route for more specific query logic.
Forms for entering and editing records
Forms provide an interface for data entry, editing, and navigation. The project lists controls such as text boxes, buttons, and dropdown lists, which can make a database easier to use than a view of tables alone.

Reports for formatted output
The reporting tool is intended to arrange database data for printing or export, with options for layout and grouping. These capabilities are described by the project; they should not be taken as hands-on verification of output quality or compatibility with a particular workflow. KEXI features
Where KEXI stores data and how sharing works
The KEXI feature page identifies SQLite as its built-in, file-based default. It also lists connections to MySQL/MariaDB and PostgreSQL servers. A local file is suited to keeping a database in one file; the handbook describes server use as a way to share a database and let more than one person use it at once. Server-backed use therefore depends on having and configuring an appropriate database server—it is not hosting provided by KEXI itself. KEXI features KEXI handbook

Importing, exporting, and moving data
The project documents CSV import and export, as well as migration between KEXI files and MySQL or PostgreSQL. Its feature page also describes a Microsoft Access migration assistant. Those descriptions do not establish that every database feature, data type, relationship, or query will transfer intact. Before migrating important data, test a representative copy and check the resulting records, relationships, forms, queries, and reports in the destination.
Platforms and current availability
The project repository describes KEXI as designed for Linux/Unix and Windows. The handbook says official Windows support returned with version 3.1, and releases became independent of Calligra from version 3.2. These are project-history and intent statements, not confirmation that an installer is currently maintained or compatible with a particular operating-system version. KEXI repository KEXI handbook

Release status is also unclear across official pages. The KEXI site promotes version 3.2.0 and dates its release announcement to 9 April 2019; KDE’s application listing separately says KEXI is still in development and has not yet been released by KDE. The available information does not resolve whether those statements reflect different release channels or outdated metadata. Check the official project and your operating system’s distribution channels for a current package and compatibility details before choosing KEXI for a new project. - Consider it if you want a desktop tool combining visual database design, SQL, forms, and reports, and its available packages and database connections fit your environment.
- Check carefully first if you need simultaneous team access, a specific database engine, Access migration, or compatibility with a particular operating-system release. The cited project pages describe capabilities, but do not establish every configuration or migration outcome.
- Look elsewhere or verify support commitments if your decision depends on a recent release cadence, guaranteed support, or a current feature-by-feature comparison with another database application. The available release signals do not settle those questions.
Bottom line
KEXI is a desktop database application builder that combines table and query design with forms and reports, using SQLite by default and offering documented server connections. Its feature set may suit people who want to build a database interface rather than manage data only through SQL, but its present-day availability and support status should be verified before adoption.
