Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOn March 12, 2024, Fortinet announced fixes for three vulnerabilities affecting FortiOS, FortiProxy and FortiClientEMS. The flaws included two captive-portal memory errors and an unauthenticated SQL injection issue that could lead to code or command execution. The release numbers reported at the time are historical; administrators should use Fortinet’s current advisory and supported upgrade guidance, not treat that list as current 2026 advice.
Which Fortinet vulnerabilities were covered?
SecurityWeek’s March 13, 2024 report described three CVEs patched in Fortinet products. The issues affected different product families and components:
| CVE | Affected product or component | Issue and reported impact |
|---|---|---|
| CVE-2023-42789 | FortiOS and FortiProxy captive portal | Out-of-bounds write that could allow code or command execution through crafted HTTP requests. SecurityWeek said Fortinet’s product security team discovered the flaw internally. |
| CVE-2023-42790 | FortiOS and FortiProxy captive portal | Stack-based buffer overflow that could lead to code execution. |
| CVE-2023-48788 | FortiClientEMS | Critical SQL injection. The report said an unauthenticated attacker could execute code or commands through crafted requests. |
These descriptions and affected product details come from SecurityWeek’s March 2024 report. For current affected-version details and remediation, consult Fortinet’s PSIRT advisory index.
What fixed versions did the March 2024 report name?
SecurityWeek listed the following releases as containing fixes. They are the versions cited in that 2024 report, not a current upgrade target or a complete list of presently supported releases.

Before changing a live system, identify its exact product, branch and installed version, then check Fortinet’s advisory for the affected and fixed versions and follow the supported upgrade path. A later release number alone is not enough to establish a safe upgrade sequence. The September 11, 2026 CERT-FR notice covers a separate set of Fortinet advisories; it does not revise the March 2024 release list for these CVEs.
Why did the severity scores differ?
SecurityWeek reported that Fortinet rated CVE-2023-42789 and CVE-2023-48788 at CVSS 9.3, while the NIST National Vulnerability Database listed those CVEs at 9.8. These scores are severity assessments, not counts of incidents or measurements of attack frequency. This comparison reflects what SecurityWeek reported in March 2024; it is not an independent current check of the records.

Was exploitation confirmed?
At the time of the announcement, SecurityWeek reported that Fortinet had not said these vulnerabilities were being exploited in the wild. That is a historical statement about what the vendor had disclosed then, not an assessment of current exploitation activity. Check current vendor and government advisories when making a present-day risk decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What administrators should do
- Inventory affected systems. Record whether each deployment is FortiOS, FortiProxy or FortiClientEMS, along with its exact branch and installed version.
- Check the vendor advisory. Use the FortiGuard PSIRT index to find current guidance for the relevant CVE and product.
- Plan the supported update. Follow Fortinet’s current fixed-version and upgrade-path instructions for that branch rather than upgrading solely to a version in the historical table above.
- Verify after the change. Confirm the resulting product version against the vendor advisory and retain the change record under your normal patch-management process.
The March 2024 article urged administrators to patch, but its version list should be treated as historical. The appropriate current action depends on the deployed product and Fortinet’s present guidance.
