Archinstall 3.0.15 made COSMIC a selectable desktop option without the --advanced flag. The release was published on December 31, 2025, so it describes that version—not necessarily the installer bundled with Arch Linux installation media today.
What COSMIC’s addition means
The 3.0.15 release notes say COSMIC “is added (was behind --advanced flag before).” In practical terms, users of that installer version could choose COSMIC through the regular desktop-selection flow rather than enabling an advanced option first. COSMIC is a desktop environment made up of multiple packages, not just a single installer toggle. Arch Linux’s x86_64 COSMIC package group listed 28 packages when observed in 2026, including a compositor, file manager, greeter, session components, settings, an app store, and a terminal. Package versions and group contents can change; that current listing is not a definitive inventory of what Archinstall 3.0.15 installed.

COSMIC was one part of a wider installer update. The release notes also list changes to printing, boot management, memory compression, networking, power management, and installation defaults.

The release notes also describe fixes involving mirror-list hangs when a status endpoint is unavailable, /etc/resolv.conf symlinking for systemd-resolved, GRUB removable fallback behavior, menu sorting, vconsole.conf, host-to-target installs, LVM, LUKS, mirrors, and language display. These are changes reported for the release; the announcement does not establish that every fix applies to every hardware setup or configuration.
Which installer version should you use today?
For a new installation, start with Arch Linux’s current installation instructions and dated ISO release listing, which includes an installer-version field. Check that listing rather than assuming a historical release announcement matches the installer on current media. The 3.0.15 notes establish what changed in that version, not the exact contents of today’s ISO.

If you are specifically following instructions for Archinstall 3.0.15, its COSMIC selection change is relevant only when using that installer version. For an installation using newer media, consult the current instructions and the version shown for that media.

The key change is a simpler route to choosing COSMIC in Archinstall 3.0.15: it moved from an advanced-flag option to a regular desktop choice. The release also adjusted several installation components and defaults, but neither the release announcement nor the current package listing should be treated as a compatibility promise or as a guide to the exact package set installed by that historical installer.
