To reduce the risk of remote access to your home router, disable remote management unless you need it, replace default administrator credentials, and keep the router’s firmware current. Then use WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal Wi-Fi security, turn off unused convenience features, and check the guest network and firewall settings. Menu names and update procedures vary by router, so use the current instructions from your manufacturer or internet service provider (ISP).
1. Update the router through the right support channel
Firmware is the software that runs the router. Check your router manufacturer’s website for the current update instructions and information for your specific model. Do not install a firmware file intended for another model or follow a generic menu path: the correct update and process are device-specific.
If your ISP supplied the router, ask whether it sends firmware updates automatically and how to check that the device is current. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises users to check with their ISP about automatic updates for ISP-provided equipment. FTC: How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network
2. Disable remote management if you do not need it
In the router’s administration settings, look for “remote management” or a similarly named option and turn it off unless you have a specific need to administer the router from outside your home network. The feature can allow router settings to be changed over the internet. Its availability and default behavior vary by model and setup, so do not assume that every router exposes its administration interface publicly.

For the exact setting name and steps, consult the manufacturer’s current instructions or your ISP’s guidance. The FTC includes disabling remote management among its recommended home-network safeguards. FTC guidance
3. Change both passwords—and know what each one protects
- Administrator credentials: These control access to router configuration settings. Replace default credentials with unique ones.
- Wi-Fi password: This lets devices join the wireless network. Choose a unique password for it too.
Do not use personal information, such as a name or address, or the router brand in either credential. If you are unsure how to change them, search the manufacturer’s support site for instructions on changing your router’s admin password and Wi-Fi network password, or contact the manufacturer. 4. Use WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal
In the Wi-Fi security settings, choose WPA3 Personal if your router offers it. If not, use WPA2 Personal. WPA and WEP are outdated security options; do not select them when WPA2 or WPA3 is available.
If the router offers only WPA or WEP, check the manufacturer’s update information to see whether an update enables WPA2 or WPA3. If it does not, consider replacing the router rather than relying on outdated Wi-Fi security. FTC encryption guidance

5. Turn off convenience features you do not use
The FTC recommends turning off Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), as well as remote management. WPS can let a device join through a button-based process instead of entering the Wi-Fi password; UPnP lets devices find one another. Before disabling either feature, consider whether your household relies on it, then follow the router maker’s instructions for the specific model.
6. Set up a guest network and finish safely
If your router supports a guest network, give it a separate network name and password. This means visitors do not need your primary Wi-Fi password, and a guest device with malware is less likely to reach devices on the primary network, according to the FTC.

After changing settings, log out of the router’s administrator account and check that its built-in firewall is enabled. Use your manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions if you cannot find the guest-network or firewall controls. FTC guest-network and firewall guidance

Replacement is worth considering if an update cannot make WPA2 or WPA3 available, or if the router no longer receives security support and cannot be maintained securely. The first condition follows the FTC’s advice for equipment limited to WPA or WEP; the broader support principle is consistent with CISA’s June 4, 2025 guidance to patch internet-accessible assets and replace devices that no longer receive security support. CISA’s guidance addresses organizational assets, so apply that principle to a home router with the model’s support status in mind.

Use the router’s current instructions
Router menus, update delivery, and support status depend on the model and, for ISP-provided equipment, the provider. Before changing a setting or installing an update, use the current instructions for that device. These steps reduce avoidable exposure; no checklist can guarantee that a network is immune to attack.
