Before buying a PC game, compare its official system requirements with the exact hardware in your computer, then check benchmarks from similar PCs running the same game at settings close to yours. These checks can help you estimate compatibility and performance, but neither a requirements checker nor a minimum-spec match guarantees a smooth frame rate.
Decide what “run well” means for you
Set a target before comparing specs: the resolution you play at, the graphics quality you want, and the frame rate you consider acceptable. There is no universal threshold for a good experience; it depends on your display, preferences, and the game. A result measured at low resolution and low settings may not answer whether a game will feel good at your preferred settings.
Identify your PC’s exact hardware
Record the processor (CPU), graphics processor (GPU), installed memory (RAM), operating system, and available storage. Use the full model names. A laptop GPU or CPU with a familiar product name may not perform like a similarly named desktop part, so a broad description such as “gaming laptop” is not enough for a useful comparison.
A checker such as Can I Run It can simplify this step: its guide says its Hardware Detector can identify PC components and open a compatibility form with the detected information filled in. Treat its result as a screening estimate based on the checker’s hardware and game data—not as a test of the game running on your particular PC.

Compare your PC with the game’s official requirements
Open the game’s official store listing and find its System Requirements section. Steam says its store pages show system requirements and advises checking both hardware requirements and compatible operating systems. Compare the minimum and recommended specifications with your exact CPU, GPU, RAM, OS, and available storage. Also check any stated graphics or platform requirements.
Minimum and recommended specifications are a first screen, not an FPS forecast. Steam warns that a system at or near the listed requirements may still have performance or launch problems. If your PC falls below a requirement, that does not by itself establish exactly how the game will behave; it does mean you should seek more specific evidence before buying.

Use benchmarks that resemble your PC and target settings
Look for benchmarks or gameplay tests of the same game using hardware close to your CPU and GPU. A result is useful only when its test conditions resemble what you intend to play. Compare:
- Exact GPU model and graphics memory, plus the exact CPU model.
- Installed system memory and the operating system used.
- Resolution and graphics preset, including demanding options such as ray tracing or upscaling when relevant.
- Average frame rate and, where reported, consistency of frame delivery—not just a single peak number.
- The game version used for the test, if stated; patches can change performance.
Do not equate a low-resolution, low-preset result with performance at a higher resolution or quality setting. PCGamingWiki maintains a list of games with built-in benchmarks and in-game frame-rate tracking, which can help you find out whether the title offers a repeatable test. It is a secondary resource, so check the game’s own documentation and test details as well.

Account for problems a spec comparison cannot predict
Performance depends on more than the listed parts. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance notes that bugs or inefficient game code can cause low frame rates, and its hardware guidance identifies overheating and low memory as possible causes of slowdowns or hitches. A computer can therefore meet a nominal requirement and still provide a poor experience.
If you already own the game, use a representative gameplay section to see how it behaves rather than judging from a static menu. Steam’s overlay can show a performance monitor while a game runs, including FPS (frames per second) and system load. Look for slow frames that recur and whether they coincide with high system load; a monitor can help describe the problem, but it does not by itself identify the cause.

- POWERHOUSE 8-CORE GAMING PERFORMANCE — Driven by the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F with 8 cores and 16 threads, boosting up to 5.0 GHz for smooth, responsive gameplay and the ability to handle AAA titles, streaming, and background tasks all at once
- NEXT-GEN BLACKWELL ARCHITECTURE — The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 is powered by NVIDIA's cutting-edge Blackwell GPU architecture, delivering a massive generational leap in rasterization and ray tracing performance so you can experience your games the way they were meant to be played.
- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. *MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
- Cool While Gaming: In conjunction with an ARGB fan Air Cooler, the Codex R2 features four system cooling fans; three in the front and one in the rear to pull in cool air and push heat out of the PC.
- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
Steam’s hardware guidance says heat-related slowdowns may call for a hardware fix such as better cooling or ventilation. It also explains that memory pressure can cause swapping to disk and repeated frame-rate hitches. These are reasons to diagnose the specific issue before buying an upgrade, not evidence that every slow game needs more RAM or a new GPU.
For a game struggling on integrated graphics, Steam’s software troubleshooting suggests trying low shader detail and windowed mode. These settings may help in some situations; they are not a promise of acceptable performance.

Make a purchase decision from the evidence
- Write down your target resolution, graphics quality, and acceptable frame rate.
- Identify your exact CPU, GPU, RAM, operating system, and free storage.
- Compare those details with the game’s official minimum and recommended requirements, including OS compatibility.
- Find same-game benchmarks with similar hardware and settings. If the available tests differ substantially from your target, treat their results as uncertain rather than directly comparable.
- If performance remains uncertain, check the retailer’s current refund terms for your region before buying; terms and program status can change.
A “pass” from an automated checker is not a guarantee of a particular FPS, and the sources cited here do not establish a general accuracy percentage for system-requirement predictions. Store listings, checker databases, game patches, drivers, and benchmark results can change, so favor current information for the specific game version you plan to play.
