A deep convolutional neural network (CNN) classifies sentiment by turning text into a machine-readable representation, applying learned convolutional filters to detect patterns associated with sentiment labels, and using those patterns to predict a class such as positive or negative. A 2019 study by Hannah Kim and Young-Seob Jeong tested CNN architectures with consecutive convolutional layers on review datasets; its results illustrate one experimental approach, not a universal ranking of CNNs against other model types.
How a CNN classifies sentiment in text
A text classifier needs a numerical representation of its input. In the approach studied by Kim and Jeong, the text is represented in a form the network can process. Convolutional filters then learn local patterns that help distinguish the sentiment labels in the training data. A final classification stage uses the learned features to assign a label.
These filters capture patterns useful for the task; they do not demonstrate human-like understanding of a review or provide, by themselves, reliable causal explanations for a prediction. The exact representation and architecture can vary between CNN systems.
What Kim and Jeong tested
Their 2019 paper, published in Applied Sciences, examines CNN architectures for sentiment classification, including designs with consecutive convolutional layers. The authors compared their configurations with traditional machine-learning and other deep-learning approaches on three datasets: Movie Review (MR), Customer Review (CR), and Stanford Sentiment Treebank (SST). The tasks were not identical across datasets:

The authors report that consecutive convolutional layers contributed to better performance on relatively long text in their experiments. That finding applies to the tested configurations and data; it does not establish that deeper CNNs always perform better or that CNNs outperform current transformer models.
Reported weighted-F1 results
Kim and Jeong report the following weighted-F1 scores. The binary and ternary MR results are separate tasks, so they should not be treated as directly interchangeable.

These are the study’s results on its selected data and protocol, not accuracy figures or a current head-to-head benchmark against transformer classifiers. A fair model comparison requires the same corpus and version, label scheme, data split, preprocessing, and evaluation metric.
How dataset preparation affects the results
The paper describes dataset-specific label preparation. It constructs a ternary MR dataset with positive, neutral, and negative labels, and binarizes SST using a score threshold of 0.5. For CR, the authors report using 3,671 examples from a larger available set to control the proportions of positive and negative classes.

The preprocessing described includes decapitalizing text and removing hashtags, repeated spaces, tabs, retweet markers, and stop words. The authors divide each dataset into training, validation, and test portions in a 55:20:25 ratio. As a result, the reported scores depend not just on the CNN architecture but also on these choices.
What “Movie Review” means here
MR can refer to different corpus descriptions or dataset variants. A tutorial by MachineLearningMastery describes a polarity dataset with 1,000 positive and 1,000 negative reviews. Kim and Jeong, meanwhile, describe MR experiments with binary and ternary data, including a 27,435-example ternary construction. Those descriptions should not be merged into a single size claim: the 2,000-review figure belongs to the tutorial’s dataset description, not every MR variant in the paper.

How to reproduce or compare a result
When reproducing this study or comparing its figures with another sentiment classifier, record the experimental details that determine what the score means:
- The corpus and exact version used.
- The task and label mapping, including whether classification is binary or ternary.
- Preprocessing operations and any examples excluded or sampled.
- The training, validation, and test split.
- The model representation and architecture.
- The metric, including whether F1 is weighted or reported by class.
Without matching these conditions, a difference in scores cannot be attributed confidently to the model architecture. The reported 2019 results also do not establish how this CNN fares against modern transformer sentiment classifiers under a controlled, contemporary comparison.
